My Psychology degree and 9 years of experience working with children with Neuro-divergence and additional educational needs prior to teaching have significantly shaped my approach to teaching.
I prioritise relationship building and trust with students and their caregivers.
I am patient, kind, and incredibly encouraging but have high expectations. I work with students for them to also gain high expectations in themselves. This may happen in the first few sessions or may take a longer period of time depending on the student.
I help students gain high expectations for themselves by initially giving tasks where they are guaranteed success, then celebrating and reflecting on this success and how they were able to use the skills taught and their effort to complete the task. This builds a persons confidence and significantly increases the likelihood of attempting more difficult tasks. This is heavily proven by research (and seen in my classroom daily) known as the “theory of self efficacy” and the “theory of planned behaviour”.
If a person does not believe a task is within their capability, they are incredibly unlikely to even attempt it (No matter how much we believe they can do it).
It is my job to SHOW students they can do it by designing tasks and lessons in a way that they feel challenged finish with pride in their achievements.
When teaching new skills I will show them first, then we will complete a task together, then they will apply the skills independently. I will be constantly assessing as they work independently and provide support where necessary. The ultimate goal is to phase back my support until they are using the taught skills correctly, consistently, confidently and independently.
Lessons will vary depending on students needs. If caregivers want to spend a percentage of the lesson to discuss, that will be agreed upon. If there are specific targets you want me to cover then we can dedicate time for you to tell me these expectations. If you would prefer me to assess your student and gage where the gaps are and plan accordingly, that is also ok.

Is your child in secondary school but needs support in the foundation subjects such as reading, writing or maths?
Reading and writing is an essential skills in secondary school for every subject. I can support your child to close the gap so they can access all subjects with their peers. Having worked in secondary schools before, I have seen how much students are required to read and write in all lessons, but there will not be opportunities to learn these fundamental skills at school.

I am a young, energetic, kind and caring individual who has a passion for primary education. During my time at sixth form, I managed to achieve 3 A levels and I have recently achieved a BSc First- class Psychology degree. I currently work as an associate tutor in a primary school, where I assist whole class teaching, teach my own phonics group and my role focuses highly on the SEMH needs of the students. I have also worked as a mental health worker, I always put the needs of the students first and understand regulating emotions can be difficult for children in KS1 and KS2.

Using my knowledge and experience of having taught all ages of the Primary Curriculum - from Nursery to Primary 7 - along with my passion for working with children, I strive to provide the very best level of teaching and learning for every individual I work with. I use a variety of resources during tutorial sessions to aid and reinforce teaching points - for example, magnetic alphabetic letters and boards; flash cards; Dienes hundreds, tens and units cubes; Numicon; Seal Maths; Jolly Phonics; Oxford Reading Tree books; Read, Write, Inc resources; Schofield & Sims and CGP workbooks. Each tutorial session starts with a welcoming ‘check-in’ as to how the child is feeling that day and how their day has been, so that I can gauge the expectation for the session. I usually ask if there is anything in particular that the child wants to work on during the session - for example, there may be something that has been introduced in class at school that day/week that the child found confusing or difficult and wants specific help with or further explanation. I would then suggest a plan and learning intention / goal for our tutorial session that day. Teaching would then take the form of practical, written and oral work, ensuring understanding and comprehension as the lesson progresses. The pace of the lesson is very much tailored by my professional judgement and intuition as to how the child is responding and interpreting the work we are doing. A plenary at the end of the session to recap what we have worked on during that session and ensure understanding, is always extremely valuable. In consultation with parents, some request homework for their children, which I am happy to assign and mark. Weekly sessions are most successful, ensuring continuity and progression at a greater pace.

I have taught corporate clients for the past 10 years and for the previous 4 years was an IELTS instructor for Aston American University. I have worked in the education setting for the past 9 years; working with children of differing ages and abilities. In 2013, I qualified as a Primary School teacher and took up my first teaching post in a school in Devon. I taught a mixed class of Year 4,5 and 6 children over many years and got through many Year 6 SATs testing too. During this time, I was part of an Ofsted inspection where I was graded ‘outstanding’ in my teaching practice.
I then went on to teach at another Devon primary school where I taught a variety of year groups. During this time, I went on to learn more about the best methods to teach Mathematics along with taking part in a Mathematics Mastery research programme. I supported teachers and ran training in how to improve Maths teaching across the schools.
Whilst studying for my degree at the Plymouth University, I spent time researching in both Special Needs and main stream Schools to learn about child development. In 2011, I worked as a Learning Support Assistant at a Special Needs School where I worked alongside the Mathematics teacher to support the children’s learning in a way that would work best for each child in the school.
Tutoring has become a natural progression for me after teaching for many years. I genuinely believe that with the right support ALL children can succeed. Watching children make small steps of progress has been the key to my love of teaching. As a tutor, I can gently assess your child and give them the extra support to help them gain the confidence they need in school. Many parents have mentioned how their child’s confidence has improved since tuition, not only in the subject they were tutored in, but as an individual overall. This in many ways is as important as grades achieved. Through the improvement in confidence, a child can start to flourish and will start to get more out of their school setting.
