About AP Exam Prep

AP exams, also known as Advanced Placement examinations, are exams offered in the United States and other places around the world, which are taken by students each year in the month of May. The tests mark the end of the Advanced Placement courses that run throughout the year.

Initially the AP program was tested out in 1952 and in 1956 it was officially implemented in ten subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, History, French, German, Spanish, and Latin.

Advanced Placement (also known as AP) is a program in the United States which offers college-level curricula and exams to high school students to prepare them for university. There are currently 36 courses which students can decide to take, including Calculus, Biology, Computer Science. Latin, Microeconomics and more.

Although some students might take the exams just for the challenge, the biggest benefit of the AP courses is that many American colleges and universities may grant placement and course credits to students who score high results on the examinations. Essentially, AP tests are a standardised way of validating students' course records. Their goal is to ensure that students have actually learned the material throughout the course and deserve the appropriate credit.

Although AP exams are not an entry requirement for universities, earning college credit can be extremely beneficial especially from a financial standpoint. Credits can be used to leapfrog certain courses that otherwise could take a whole semester or even a year to finish. Considering the tuition fees in the United States this could be helpful for many students.

What is the format of the AP exams?

Due to the fact that there are over 30 different subjects involved in AP, the exams aren’t all identical and vary from course to course. However, there are things that all of them share. Every AP exam has a multiple choice section, which is scored by computer, and a free response or essay section, which is scored by college professors and AP teachers.

When the AP reading is over, the scores from the open responses are combined with the results of the computer-graded multiple choice questions. The AP grades that are reported to students are based on a five-point scale:

  • 5: Extremely well qualified
  • 4: Very well qualified
  • 3: Qualified
  • 2: Possibly qualified
  • 1: No recommendation

In the United States most high schools offer extra classes specifically for AP preparation. However, when it comes to the United Kingdom, it might not be as easy to find the proper tutoring. Regardless, there are plenty of options available. Many students choose to study for the exams on their own, but you can always opt for private tutoring. If you’re looking for private lessons with a teacher, then TutorExtra is the right place for you.
