What is Web Design?

Web design is arranging the elements of a website - hypertext (links), computer graphics, computer animation, sound, in a certain way to present the site then from a web browser, most often in a visual way. Web design involves making one or more web pages that are organised by a set of internal links (hyperlinks).

It's important to understand the difference between web design and web development, the latter of which, in addition to web design, usually involves executable programs or scripts that are run remotely on a server and their output is visualised through web pages.

What is the history of Web Design?

Historically, the protocol for developing web pages was invented by the European nuclear research laboratory CERN. Web pages were originally used as an internal system for cataloguing and linking disconnected texts on CERN servers. The first website created is located at info.cern.ch.

In purely technical terms, web design can be defined as writing hypertext, i.e. text with interactive references either to other parts of the text or to another text document. The end product of web design is HTML pages, images in various formats (most commonly jpeg, png), animations (most commonly gif or flash), etc.

The web design process can be seen as a mixture of creative and technical work. The creative work includes the artwork of the individual graphic and audio elements, the formatting of the text. The technical work involves the arrangement of these elements most often through HTML code, which through the appropriate standard used is then rendered on an output device (usually a monitor).
