DIY is the abbreviation for Do It Yourself. Basically DIY means that you create your own art instead of hiring a professional or buying a final product. You decide what materials to use, how to combine them and what the final product will look like. DIY projects can be created in many aspects. For example, jewellery, paintings, upholstery, recycling and whatever your imagination can think of. DIY can go even further since it can also be applied to processes like your own hairstyling, sewing clothes, decorating cakes, managing your own investments and many more.

What is the History of Do It Yourself (DIY)?

The philosophy of the Do It Yourself or, as some call it, Arts and Crafts movement, started in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The DIY movement criticises modern consumer culture by emphasising that the solution to our needs is to use technology ourselves to replace the purchase of industrial goods and services.

But DIY is not a phenomenon from the 20th century. Long before that, this movement was a long-held interest in practical work which could happen in the home, not the workplace.

The grandfather of all modern DIY manuals is Jason Moxon. He wrote a book called Mechanick Exercises published in 1683. The book described how to be a blacksmith, cast metal, draw, do joinery with wood, print books, engrave, make maps and mathematical instruments.

Later in the 19th century, other books were written that describe practical projects in detail.

What are the benefits of DIY projects?

DIY projects are extremely popular these days. From children to adults, everyone is making DIY art. Creating your own project has many benefits. The feeling when you see the final result of your hard work is amazing. DIY activities are really fun and they also have many positive benefits for your body, mind and wallet.

DIY helps you to reduce your stress and improves your mood. When you work long hours on your DIY projects you invest time and energy. Finishing it can help you feel really happy with your hard work and feel accomplished when you see the result of your work.

DIY teaches you new skills. Starting a new DIY project can provide you with an opportunity to learn new skills. This way you can sharpen your mind and get better with your techniques.

Are DIY lessons expensive?

DIY lessons have many benefits for you, your mind and your body. They will make you feel happy and motivated. The best thing about DIY lessons is that they are not expensive at all. They come at a fair price and many teachers are more than happy to help you learn all the basics. With DIY projects you can create almost anything exactly as you want and like it. You won't be reliable on a professional and you will save yourself a lot of money. Later on, even if you like creating art projects you can start selling them and earn money.
