John obtained a First Class Honours degree in Physics and Philosophy from Durham, before a PhD in Physics and Applied Mathematics at Leeds. He now works as a research scientist in London, following similar experience in Washington, DC.
With wide experience in communicating and teaching, John has established a personable and adaptable approach. He is able to explain concepts from a number of angles, and enjoys helping students find their individual way in to a subject. His goal is to give students the confidence that they really ‘get’ the topic at hand, not just to reinforce rote learning. This approach has been successful both in general revision, helping to solidify ideas, and in targeted exam preparation, helping to unlock specific barriers to understanding.

I am able to teach GCSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and further Maths, as well as teaching A-level Biology, Chemistry and Maths. I am friendly and encouraging and believe that tutoring should be about more than just academic skills and knowledge. I think an essential part of tutoring should be raising a child`s self-confidence. Making sure that they believe that they can do this. During the lesson, I use many strategies and styles to create a stimulating and enjoyable learning experience. I use teaching styles which match the learner`s learning style. I can give techniques and tactics and shortcuts to vital information which would save a lot of time during the exam because the new GCSEs and A-levels are not recalling information anymore it is more of understanding and applying their knowledge, which is the key skill that I have. I always check if my students have understood the topic by providing additional questions which I prepare myself on the spot, making sure they understand the topic first, so, therefore, they can answer the exam questions. As their homework, I would provide them with exam questions at different difficulties. Also, I inform the student's parents after every lesson on how the student is doing.

ABOUT ME:
In my younger school years I used to find maths and physics difficult. But I applied myself and discovered the way to learn those subjects. This pushed me to obtain a Masters in Civil Engineering and work as an engineer for 4 years.
I discovered my love for tutoring after volunteering to tutor maths. I would like to pass on my tips and tricks to tackling exam questions as well as efficient techniques to revise content.
I want to help as many pupils as I can get confident in maths, physics and French.
TEACHING STYLE:
I teach in person and online using a collaborative whiteboard.
In our lessons we will learn and reinforce the fundamentals.
We will focus on solving problems, understanding exam language and exam technique through practicing exam questions.
We will do a lot of practice, which I believe is essential for success in the subject.
- I provide targeted support where students need it most.
- I will aim to create an engaging and positive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring new ideas.
