Manchester Metropolitan University | Manchester | Bachelor | English Literature & Creative Writing |
I graduated in English Literature & Creative Writing from MMU with a 1st Class Hons in 2019. Since then I’ve continued writing Songs and Poetry, as well as helping friends with Proofreading and Co-Editing for an independent cultural magazine. I love reading and writing and I can talk confidently about a wide range of literature, including the standard Secondary School texts.
I spent 2 years from 16-18 as a Teaching Assistant in Hebrew for Primary School age children. In March of this year I started tutoring English GCSE for 3 different students. I developed a positive relationship with students and their parents and helped enhance confidence going into exams. We’re still waiting on results but I was glad to have helped a student achieve a Grade 6 in their Oral exam despite English not being their first language! I’m looking forward to developing my experience and not only teaching students but learning from them too.
I will tailor our sessions based on your specific goals and I will listen to the students to hear if they are struggling with anything in particular.
Sessions will be driven by discussion so as to facilitate a deeper and broader understanding of texts and ideas. I like to let students lead the conversation and tell me about what they’re studying before we look at expanding on their knowledge. I encourage students to be open and opinionated, creative and critical.
I make sure to get to know the student on a personal level and find out about their interests. This is important in establishing a relaxed and trusting environment, and it also means that the tasks I set and analogies I provide can remain engaging and relatable.
If there are specific academic goals, we will do a close reading of the assessment objectives in which I can help explain difficult terms and translate these into our particular situation, identifying where the student is at, and working out where we can improve. All the while, I will make sure this feels achievable to the student and never overwhelming.
I will bring in other interesting example texts to discuss, often starkly different and maybe more modern than the texts on the school www.*** is useful in prompting new discussions when the student may be feeling a bit bored of the set texts and needing something fresh. Hopefully, these texts can cultivate an enjoyment of literature that will be beneficial to the student’s mindset. This will also develop the vital skill of preparing for exams with unseen texts and increasing students’ confidence.
The tasks that I set can include relaxed, free-flowing text-based discussion, fun free-thinking Creative Writing prompts, structured revision and grammar practice, and more, depending on goals and learning style.
Building and maintaining confidence will be integral to our sessions and I will do everything to make sure the student feels comfortable and ready for all their assessments, and that despite pressures and anxieties, they are always on a good steady path. |
