I am a highly experienced, flexible and very versatile tutor, with advanced degrees and teaching qualifications in business, finance, history, literature, art, classics, maths and sciences. I teach at Middlesex University, and also conduct face to face and online training for a variety of other clients, from teenagers up to adult professionals. I have experience with exam prep (IB, CFA, CISI) as well as undergrad and postgrad courses in the subjects listed above. I can travel across London or even overseas for the right assignments. I believe I charge fairly for value provided, and promote an engaging, enjoyable teaching and learning style.

I am an enthusiastic PhD researcher/student in Classics at the University of Cambridge, where I also completed a BA in Classics (grade: First Class Honours) and MPhil in Classics (grade: Distinction; Classical Members’ Essay Prize for the year’s best MPhil theses). I am originally from Italy, where I completed the Italian equivalent of A-Levels in various subjects, including Italian.
I have tutoring experience and university-level teaching experience:
- Postgraduate Teaching Assistant (running reading classes on Ovid’s Ars Amatoria, Sallust’s Catiline, Homer’s Iliad), Faculty of Classics, University of Cambridge (2021-).
- Supervisor (leading small-group teaching sessions on Greek and Latin translation, Greek epic, Aristophanes’ Frogs, Euripides’ Bacchae, the Greek Novel, and female characters, voices, and authors in Greek literature, from Alcman to Julia Balbilla), Clare College, Murray Edwards College, St Catherine’s College, Emmanuel College, St John’s College, University of Cambridge (2021-).
- Invited Lecturer for third-year undergraduate students (‘Homeric Reception: Greek Literature’s Odysseuses’), University of Cambridge (08/05/2021).
I am an extremely patient, empathetic teacher and I tailor my lessons to each individual student. My mission is to get all students to the level required for performing as well as possible in their exams and concretely improve their knowledge of Ancient Greek, Latin, Italian and every topic related to 'Classical Civilisation'.
I am an Oxford graduate (Worcester College), with a degree in Literae Humaniores - Latin and Greek language and literature, as well as ancient and modern philosophy (BA 2013, MA 2016) I am also a professional classical singer and conductor, active around the UK. I am a Lay Vicar at Chichester Cathedral, where I sing professionally with the cathedral choir. Friendly, approachable, and professional, I am passionate about teaching and helping people to develop their knowledge and skills.
My business, JB Tutoring, operates from Chichester. I offer teaching and tutoring in singing, voice use, music, classical languages and classical literature. I also tutor online, so I am able to take on students from anywhere. I teach and tutor my academic subjects at a variety of levels, from pre-GCSE to undergraduate and master's level, and my students most often go on to receive A*s and 1st Class results in their examinations. I am also happy to tutor younger pupils towards Common Entrance examinations. I have experience in preparing students for Oxbridge Admissions, and offer such preparation for Classics and related subjects (including Archaeology and Philosophy - please send me a message to discuss this further). My language teaching is based on the way in which classical languages are taught at Oxford, and I believe in the development both of analytical language skills and an instinct for the art of translation. For GCSE and A-Level, it is important for vocabulary and grammar to be secure, so I encourage a rigorous approach to language, but one that is interesting. I ask for a tutee to try their hardest - as long as they do, they will be met with an enthusiastic, patient, and understanding tutor, a tutor dedicated to his teaching and his pupil. It is vital to tailor sessions to the student, and I customise my lessons for each student I have based on their needs.
