A Level Chemistry Tuition
I was a very successful Head of Department and since retirement I have been giving private lessons to students in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, either in their own home or from my home in Loscoe, near Heanor and am also available to provide online tuition via WhatsApp to students located anywhere in the world.
I tutor both home educated and school children and am familiar with all the major syllabi, such as Nuffield, Edexcel and AQA.
I tutor Chemistry up to 'A' Level and Science to GCSE / SATs level and I like to make the sessions both enjoyable and challenging, believing that creating a relaxed, fun learning environment aids the learning process.
As part of the chemistry classes I include techniques for achieving good results in your exam, such as revision techniques and the best approach when answering exam questions.
I am a very dedicated teacher who specialises in biology but am confident in all three sciences.
I aim to make learning as engaging as possible for all abilities.
I think that my enthusiasm for the subject comes across in my teaching, especially in a one to one setting.
I currently use the AQA specification but am very familiar with Edexcel also.
I love teaching and I love tutoring as it allows more focus on specific areas as well as identifying the child’s areas of strength and weakness.
I strive to make all of science accessible and enjoyable for students, relating topics to real life. I have taught a range of abilities and SEN needs while at my current school while also leading the STEM program, aiming to engage all students.
I have taught Chemistry at a large Leicestershire 14-18 School for over 30 years. I have been Head of Chemistry at this school for 20 years. I teach AQA GCSE Chemistry and AQA A-Level Chemistry. I have also taught Nuffield A-Level Chemistry. I have tutored AQA, EDEXCEL, OCR and OCR(Salters) A-Level Chemistry and AQA and OCR GCSE Chemistry. I have tutored students outside of school for 26 years with much success. Many of my A-level students have achieved 100% in A-level Chemistry modules and I have tutored many GCSE students who have achieved 100% in all their GCSE modules for GCSE Chemistry. I am also a Principal Examiner for IGCSE Chemistry. I have marked both Foundation and Higher IGCSE Chemistry papers. I have been an Examiner for Singapore A-level Chemistry. Both these roles have helped me to recognise the difficulties that students have with both GCSE and A-level examination questions and the way to answer them successfully. I use this knowledge to the students advantage in my lessons. I tutor online using Skype, Zoom, Teams and FaceTime which works really well. I have had many students who have gone on to study medicine and other medical degrees. I also write multiple choice GCSE Chemistry questions for an exam board.
My approach is variable depending on the ability of the student and what they are struggling on at the time. However I believe that the practicing of past paper questions is vital for examination success. It is the attention to detail which counts in an examination and I make sure all of my students know everything in the syllabus and have practiced lots of different styles of examination question. I tutor online using Skype, Zoom, Teams and FaceTime usually texting, emailing or messaging students examination practice questions which works really well. At the moment all my tutoring is online. Previous A'level results are: 100% A*-C, 85% A*-A, 8% B, 7% C. 100% of students got into their first choice universities and 31% achieved placed in medical school. These grades are representative of the results achieved in previous years. 2023 GCSE results were 100% grades 9-7 from students taking higher level papers and 100% grade 5 from students sitting the foundation level papers (the highest grade they could attain).
I have been a full-time tutor for the past eleven years and I am a past Vice-President of The Tutors' Association, the professional body for the tuition industry. I was elected into this position by members of the tutoring profession. I tutor as a full-time profession.

I offer tuition either online or face-to-face at my home, where I have an area which is free from distractions and all my materials and resources are immediately available to make tuition as effective as possible.
I believe in taking a very individual approach to tutoring, adapting approaches and resources to fit the needs of the individual. Prior to commencing tuition we will agree tuition goals and I will work with these to develop a personalized scheme of learning. During tuition I will monitor student progress and keep records of this so that learning and attainment can be tracked and approaches can be continually adapted to meet the developing needs of the learner.
