My Psychology degree and 9 years of experience working with children with Neuro-divergence and additional educational needs prior to teaching have significantly shaped my approach to teaching.
I prioritise relationship building and trust with students and their caregivers.
I am patient, kind, and incredibly encouraging but have high expectations. I work with students for them to also gain high expectations in themselves. This may happen in the first few sessions or may take a longer period of time depending on the student.
I help students gain high expectations for themselves by initially giving tasks where they are guaranteed success, then celebrating and reflecting on this success and how they were able to use the skills taught and their effort to complete the task. This builds a persons confidence and significantly increases the likelihood of attempting more difficult tasks. This is heavily proven by research (and seen in my classroom daily) known as the “theory of self efficacy” and the “theory of planned behaviour”.
If a person does not believe a task is within their capability, they are incredibly unlikely to even attempt it (No matter how much we believe they can do it).
It is my job to SHOW students they can do it by designing tasks and lessons in a way that they feel challenged finish with pride in their achievements.
When teaching new skills I will show them first, then we will complete a task together, then they will apply the skills independently. I will be constantly assessing as they work independently and provide support where necessary. The ultimate goal is to phase back my support until they are using the taught skills correctly, consistently, confidently and independently.
Lessons will vary depending on students needs. If caregivers want to spend a percentage of the lesson to discuss, that will be agreed upon. If there are specific targets you want me to cover then we can dedicate time for you to tell me these expectations. If you would prefer me to assess your student and gage where the gaps are and plan accordingly, that is also ok.

Is your child in secondary school but needs support in the foundation subjects such as reading, writing or maths?
Reading and writing is an essential skills in secondary school for every subject. I can support your child to close the gap so they can access all subjects with their peers. Having worked in secondary schools before, I have seen how much students are required to read and write in all lessons, but there will not be opportunities to learn these fundamental skills at school.

For over twenty years I was an English/French teacher to students between the ages of 3 to 19.
I also have over thirty years of experience in teaching English, French, Romanian, Mathematics and Physics in private. I'm fluent in Spanish, ( my native language) French, and English and have spent many years teaching and studying languages. I effectively deliver and plan online outstanding lessons and the feedback that I have received from parents, pupils, and adult learners have always been very stimulating. Using my knowledge and experience of having taught all ages of the Primary Curriculum - from Nursery to Primary 7 - along with my passion for working with children, I strive to provide the very best level of teaching and learning for every individual I work with. I believe that building solid basic foundations in Literacy and Numeracy gives children the tools to access the wider curriculum with confidence. Tapping into and understanding the ways in which each individual child learns and progresses is key. Every child is an individual, therefore every lesson is tailored to the child, ensuring the right balance of success and challenge is met in each session, thus developing knowledge, skills and most importantly confidence for the child. Getting to know children and building a rapport with each individual is paramount, as is understanding the way in which the each child learns best - through active learning, written methods, talking, listening, reading, watching, doing. The initial tutorial session will be exploratory, consulting with parents to discuss the child’s requirements and areas needing more support and development. I use a variety of resources during tutorial sessions to aid and reinforce teaching points - for example, magnetic alphabetic letters and boards; flash cards; Dienes hundreds, tens and units cubes; Numicon; Seal Maths; Jolly Phonics; Oxford Reading Tree books; Read, Write, Inc resources; Schofield & Sims and CGP workbooks. Each tutorial session starts with a welcoming ‘check-in’ as to how the child is feeling that day and how their day has been, so that I can gauge the expectation for the session. I usually ask if there is anything in particular that the child wants to work on during the session - for example, there may be something that has been introduced in class at school that day/week that the child found confusing or difficult and wants specific help with or further explanation. I would then suggest a plan and learning intention / goal for our tutorial session that day. Teaching would then take the form of practical, written and oral work, ensuring understanding and comprehension as the lesson progresses. The pace of the lesson is very much tailored by my professional judgement and intuition as to how the child is responding and interpreting the work we are doing. A plenary at the end of the session to recap what we have worked on during that session and ensure understanding, is always extremely valuable. In consultation with parents, some request homework for their children, which I am happy to assign and mark. Weekly sessions are most successful, ensuring continuity and progression at a greater pace.

My tutorials are well prepared, structured, and adapted to your child/ren’s learning style/s. The first Zoom call is an opportunity to discuss their learning objectives; these might be goals such as developing their spoken language skills in French/English, or something more specific such as providing additional support for students with dyslexia.
Whatever your child’s learning needs may be, they will be given a structured learning plan targeting the aspects that they would like to work on (speaking, listening, writing, vocabulary, grammar etc).
In my classes, students benefit from language acquisition as well as learning, which is essentially the process of identifying sounds > associating those sounds with meaning > imitating the sounds to convey meaning.
This process takes practice, so I focus on overcoming obstacles that might inhibit fluency in speech or coherency in writing. For example, many of my students struggle with spoken expression at first due to a lack of confidence. To help with this, I create an interactive learning space where students feel comfortable making mistakes, empowering them to make progress.
Homework and in-class activities are used to target the areas where your child/ren may face difficulties, which we then work through together in class.
