I am currently Head of Classics at a leading independent school in Cheshire. My speciality subjects are Latin and Greek languages and literature. I have 15 years of experience in teaching to pupils from KS3 to Oxbridge level in schools and I have also taught adults outside of school. In addition to teaching and improving students from the ages of 11 to 18, I can teach older students who need to learn/improve their Latin and/or Greek for university courses, as well as those who wish to learn for their own personal interest with no intention of taking a formal assessment. I prefer to tutor online and I can provide electronic copies of all the materials. All notes made by myself during tutor sessions are emailed to the student immediately after the lesson for consolidation. Many applicants for professional courses (such as the PGCE) may not have a GCSE pass or a recognised equivalent qualification in the required subjects: English, Mathematics and/or Science. DPPS offers online one-to-one or group tuition to help you prepare for these Tests. D. is a specialist education services provider. Currently, it provides two services. Firstly, tuition by expert and validated tutors, many of whom are experienced and senior examiners. Secondly, help to School-centred initial teacher training providers, or SCITTs, in delivering Equivalency Testing.
Online Latin Lessons
I have taught boys and girls in secondary schools (boarding and day, single-sex and co-ed), and have tutored pupils from Y5 upwards. In a school environment I have taught the top year (Y6) in a primary school, and all tiers of secondary school (including GCSEs, A-Levels, and the International Baccalaureate). I have also tutored pupils preparing for Common Entrance exams and scholarship exams.
I think tuition sessions benefit from incorporating as much variety as possible, including vocabulary-picture association in memory games, translation work, grammar exercises, and (if required) the solid staple of vocabulary tests. I can provide tuition across the full spectrum of age and ability, from those facing particular challenges with their learning to assisting gifted students seeking to extend their studies. I always provide an updated 'Scheme of Work' to both pupil and parents after each session, so that everyone is clear what the targets are and what has been achieved.
Please note that lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice will be charged at the full rate. Lessons cancelled between 24-48 hours beforehand will be charged at 50% of the full rate.
I am a well qualified and experienced teacher of Modern Foreign & Classical Languages with over 30 years experience teaching in local State and Independent Schools and in adult and further education colleges. I have taught French, German, Spanish, Italian, Classics and Latin from Key Stage 3 through to A- Level and am a GCSE examiner for the Pearson Edexcel exam board. I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
In my lessons, my goal is to teach you, with fun, humour and encouragement, how to use language confidently in listening, speaking, reading and writing and of course backing this up with a very sound knowledge of those building blocks called grammar. In Latin, the grammar based language study is backed up with a fun and detailed look at the historical period and the set texts. We all have differing learning needs and goals which are worked out well in advance of the first lesson so that the approach is tailor made for you so that you ultimately find the learning experience a rewarding and enjoyable one. When teaching , I use my experience of being an examiner to show you what the exam paper is really asking for and how you can ensure you get the marks and ,quite easily, exceed target. I'm currently an undergrad at Newcastle University, studying the Classics. My passion is for Doctor Who and almost anything to do with classic sci-fi and horror. I'm autistic, diagnosed since the age of 14, and so I have many experiences with other autistics and I frequently helped out with the Special Educational Needs department at my high school/sixth form. I'm a published author of horror short stories, as well as having featured on panels at FantasyCon and SciFi Weekend, with more stuff in the works. My subjects at A-Level were English Lit. (AQA), Theatre Studies (Edexcel), and Religious Studies (OCR). My high school had an internal mentoring scheme, where I helped 2 GCSE students with their English, the skills for which help with Latin and Greek immensely. For Ancient Greek, I taught a GCSE student from scratch for about 2 years, and as such created resources from scratch and would adjust my lessons on a weekly basis. For Latin, I helped the same student on a regular basis with their Latin, but at A-Level I was also asked by my Head of Classics to help the Y8s who'd joined late in the term by taking them out of lessons and catching them up on thr basic Latin skills they'd have missed. At university, I mentored 5 different students in GCSE English literature on a weekly basis, across a wide variety of texts. Additionally, my love for Classical languages and English extended to me doing JACT's Durham Summer School between L6 and U6. That, apart from being an enjoyable time in itself and which is highly recommendable, exposed me to a lot of different teaching styles, and gave me great in-depth knowledge of the languages and the culture.

I have been teaching Latin, Ancient Greek and Classical Civilisation at a secondary school for the last four years. I moved to the UK from the USA after completing a Masters degree and www.*** in Classical Philology at Harvard University. My first teaching jobs in the UK were at Winchester College and Westminster School, where I taught GCSE and A-level classes in Greek and Latin.
I have published numerous articles and books on Greek literature while working as a lecturer at the University of Bristol (2007-2011) and Corpus Christi College, Oxford (2011-2016). After the birth of my third child, I stopped lecturing and took a job locally as teacher of Greek and Latin at Pilgrims' Prep School in Winchester.
At the University of Bristol, I taught undergraduates and post graduates, many of whom were Adult learners.
