Science Clinic Private Tutors was founded in 2010. Our vision was to help struggling children understand the concepts of the major subjects which are sought after by many colleges & universities. Our tutoring was mainly in the main subjects (Maths, all 3 Sciences & English Language) to exam students only. Because of the huge demand of tutoring in all year groups, we now teach students across the board from Primary (KS1 & KS2) through to GCSE, A-level and University. We were luck to have had colleagues we share the same vision with join us. Now we can teach all subjects from Primary through to GCSE, College /A-levels and Science & Maths at University level. All our teachers / tutors are graduates and qualified teachers with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) who understand the National Curriculum. Some of them are examiners at GCSE and A-level, which means they know the exam techniques students need to answer the exam questions properly and get better grades. Within the team, we have professionals with very high qualifications ie Masters Degrees (MSc / MA) and PhDs in various subjects. We can, therefore, be confident to say we are professionals who are dedicated to what we do with proven records in the UK’s most entrance and national exams. We are a tutoring organisation that is defined by its professionalism. Our aim is to provide a personal service. This makes us very different from most tutoring companies that just offer a platform for tutors and students to meet. We speak to clients so that we can match them with the most appropriate tutor for their needs. When this happens, the results can be remarkable & confidence grows. I taught maths from GCSE to STEP at an academy in Essex from 2009 to 2017 and at another Essex academy from 2020 to 2024. In both academies I taught GCSE Mathematics A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics and STEP. About half of my students have been recommended to me. I have been a private tutor since September 1987. I do not cover D1 or D2 or Modelling With Algorithms at A level. I have a first class honours degree from Goldsmith College London where I won the Stanley Hails Memorial Prize.

My Educational Ethos
Throughout my experience as a teaching assistant, I have noticed that many students across all year groups abandon questions if it seems unfamiliar or difficult at first glance. However, when broken down in to steps students are capable of either working out a few of the steps towards the correct answer or reaching the complete answer by themselves.
I believe that one of the main reasons leading to this is the students’ lack of confidence in their ability and knowledge. Therefore, as part of my teaching process I focus on bridging the gap between classwork and being able to adapt their learnings to solve problems.
1. Starter activity
To build their confidence and reinforce their learnings, I start each of my lessons with a starter activity. This would include few questions on the material they have learned in previous lessons or the learnings directly relevant to the material covered in that lesson. I feel that this gives the students the opportunity to refresh their memory and skills whilst subtly drawing attention to the tools necessary for that lesson. These review activities and regular exercises help commit their learnings to long term memory leading to improved academic results.
For example, if the lesson was about using the circle theorems to find the angle x in a circle, I would start my lesson with a fun activity involving circle theorems.
2. Frequent reviewing sessions
Similarly, I like to commit half an hour to an hour per month reviewing and refreshing the material they’ve learnt over the course of the month. This is a great opportunity for the students to ask questions and brush up on their skills. Furthermore, this gives me an opportunity to review their understanding and focus on the divisions I feel could be improved. These reviewing sessions ensure effective learning as most of the material is built upon previous skills and learnings and consolidating the underpinning topics is key, especially in Mathematics.
3. Exercises
I believe the exercises given to the student must be tailored to their educational level and include questions which stretch their understanding to reach their maximum potential. This is because the first few exercises must build their confidence and then that can confidence can be used to introduce and encourage students to attempt more challenging problems.
With my lessons, I adapt the exercises per student depending on their ability because I strongly believe that this is the most effective method of teaching as no two students are the same. As a private tutor, I believe that this is the perfect opportunity for the students to gain the most personalised and therefore most effective lessons. Therefore, I make my lessons highly adaptive to cater to the needs and educational level of the students to enable them to reach their maximum results.
4. The whys and the hows
If the students understand the underpinning concepts behind each method, then I believe that leads to better results. A majority of the times, students are taught each method as a set of instructions. However, I believe that this is not the most effective way of teaching or learning as this does not promote independent problem solving skills and the likelihood of confusion increases if the students were to learn a set of processes per each topic. Therefore, I teach topics by placing emphasis on the objective of the problem and explaining why each step is taken.
I believe that education should be focused on the individual needs, and engage students in the process of their learning. I believe that all students have strengths and acquired knowledge, and the purpose of education is to assist students in identifying and building upon these.
One-on-one tutoring gives the opportunity for the teachings to be catered to the individual style and needs of the student which is not fulfilled to the same extent in school. Therefore, tutoring is the perfect opportunity for the student to reach their maximum potential because unlike in schools, these lessons will be going at a pace that is right for the student. Thus, it gives them the opportunity to master all areas.
For these reasons, my lessons are unique and made with the student in mind to cater to their individual needs and learning styles. This is how I ensure the students reach their maximum potential!

I am an award-winning and highly experienced "super" tutor and academic coach with over 15 years of tutoring, teaching and coaching experience, during which period I have made multiple students become university toppers and world prize winners. I always take a student-centered approach to teaching by asking students to bring their notes and talk me through the topics they feel are most difficult. My aim as your tutor would be to identify your strengths and weaknesses and build upon these appropriately. I would incorporate past paper questions very early in the curriculum to assess how well a child can apply their knowledge to answering exam questions. This will ensure that by the time the exams are sat the student will be fully prepared.

Is maths a mystery? Do you wish you understood ‘why’ as well as ‘how’? If you ask a question, does your teacher give the same explanation again and again? It doesn’t have to be that way. My methods really work; my students increase their mathematical abilities and confidence, and can explain what they’re doing. Some are so excited after my lessons that they can`t wait to tell their parents all about it! Do you wish your child was so inspired by their teacher that they voluntarily did extra maths in order to improve?
If your child has had a difficult time with maths at school, or perhaps you`ve tried other tutors and been disappointed, fear not, there is a better way. Follow other parents who have noticed their child leave my lessons with a grin, and a bounce in their step, follow other students who have messaged me after exams to tell me that there was so much they could do! In the first lesson, I`ll ask lots of questions to get a picture of what my new student can and can`t yet do, and more importantly, what they understand. I`ll then use that to build a programme for the next few weeks, including any topics that they would like to work on. Often I point out weaknesses that my students haven`t noticed or haven`t realised are holding them back; once we fix these, progress is visible and can be quick.
My planning is completely flexible and is built around my student’s progress and needs, and I use a variety of resources so that we can explore topics in different ways. I am patient and used to explaining concepts in several different ways to find the way that works for each individual. I don’t teach tricks (unless you want me to), I focus on helping students to understand.
What online lessons require and involve
Having online lessons is often something students haven’t considered or perhaps feel daunted by. I’ve taught a number of students online, some exclusively so and some when convenient e.g. when they or I went on holiday. Online lessons also allow me to be more flexible over timings and to offer a lower rate since no travel is involved.

Online lessons require a computer, not necessarily a laptop, internet access and a quiet room.
I carry out lessons on Bitpaper, an online free whiteboard. If students sign up for an account, they can save that whiteboard and come back to it whenever they want. Thus they have ready-made notes after each lesson.
My students can opt to have cameras on or not; I am always happy to follow my students’ lead on this. I know some people prefer to work unseen whereas others like being able to look at my face as we discuss topics. What matters is that my students are comfortable.
I set homework on another website, also free to use, that marks work for me and the student and allows me to focus on giving feedback and correcting misconceptions.

After graduating with an honours degree in Mathematics, Zahra entered the hedge fund world where she studied for CIMA and CFA qualifications. During that time she also taught on a voluntary basis, before deciding to pursue teaching full time. She is a supportive and friendly teacher, who has taught GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics for over 10 years.
As well as teaching maths, Zahra is also responsible for the delivery of the Medical Programme designed for students applying for medicine, dentistry or veterinary science and specialises in training students for the UKCAT and BMAT exams.
I am an Honours graduate in Applied Physics from the University of Strathclyde. I taught Mathematics to children from ages 12 to 18 for 26 years, and have successfully prepared many classes for public examinations at National 5, Higher, Advanced Higher (Mathematics and Mechanics) and A-Level. I also have considerable experience in the one-to-one tuition of students, both in school and privately. I try to keep my part of the lesson to a minimum, so that the student can get as much practice as possible.
