A little about me in the school setting
My roles have allowed me to build on a range of areas that I have been interested in for some time. My focus on ‘pedagogy’ has been developed towards ‘praxis’ – the idea that one reflects and acts uponp ractice to transform it. What I have learnt is that a narrow focus on the classroom isn’t enough. Instead,an effective system is one which develops productive and synergistic relationships between learners,families, and the community, and that a deep understanding of the context in which you work, the locality and the culture in which learners live is crucial. I believe we have started on exciting journey here proceeding and developing positively on recent Ofsted feedback – building on those to ensure that learning really is a community endeavour in the best possible sense. My ‘curriculum’ will not stop at the door of a classroom, or the school gate but will be a transforming powerhouse for all living in the community. This, in practical terms could be parenting support in the form of coaching and peer support; providing evening classes in basic skills, parental revision classes to help them best assist their child. It could be using the school buildings as a base of local CPD provision, for meetings, for collaboration among local departments.
A well-motivated, versatile, and quick learning individual after graduation took on a challenge to live in India over the last 10 years. The opportunity allowed her to contribute her background and exposure of the UK education towards India's education system to create a new foundation for the current and new generations. There was also a great opportunity to teach students there, how to speak English as they were only fluent in Gujarati and Hindi. While working at the Gujarati school in London the role consists of: Teaching and creating classwork from the foundations of the language to the complexities, ensuring pupils are able to speak, read, and write. Also worked with training teaching assistants to become classroom teachers or work with focus pupils. Currently has been working with various age group of students online teaching them how to read, write and speak Gujarati through a fun and interactive approach.

I have taught boys and girls in secondary schools (boarding and day, single-sex and co-ed), and have tutored pupils from Y5 upwards. In a school environment I have taught the top year (Y6) in a primary school, and all tiers of secondary school (including GCSEs, A-Levels, and the International Baccalaureate). I have also tutored pupils preparing for Common Entrance exams and scholarship exams.
I think tuition sessions benefit from incorporating as much variety as possible, including vocabulary-picture association in memory games, translation work, grammar exercises, and (if required) the solid staple of vocabulary tests. I can provide tuition across the full spectrum of age and ability, from those facing particular challenges with their learning to assisting gifted students seeking to extend their studies. I always provide an updated 'Scheme of Work' to both pupil and parents after each session, so that everyone is clear what the targets are and what has been achieved.

About Myself:
Welcome to my Page! I'm Tyrone. I'm glad you're here. Education can transform lives, and teachers help facilitate this. I speak from personal experience about this. My teachers did not see an academic career for me at school – and they did very little to help me change this. I was considered a low achiever and expected to be a plumber like my father. There is nothing wrong with plumbing; it just wasn't for me. If you've read this far, I hope you will continue as I map out my journey.
I left school with a list of low-grade GCSEs and 1 A-Level - yes, it was Biology! I had no hope of going to university with these grades, so I got my first job testing soil samples. Still determined to study science at university, I enrolled on several open university (OU) courses. I did well on the OU, which allowed me to study Immunology at King's College, London. I did this after spending three years as a medical laboratory assistant in the NHS, my second job.
After graduating from King's with a BSc degree and a fascination with cancer biology, I joined Newcastle University. I spent the next four years researching anti-cancer drugs' effects on DNA. I successfully developed novel ways to measure the level of anti-cancer drugs stuck to DNA. It was a great day when the Royal Society of Chemistry published my work. The Royal Society of Biology rewarded my academic and research experience with the Chartered Biologist status. Charted Biologist is the recognition of professional competence.
On returning home to Wales, I had my first taste of teaching 16 to 19-year-olds – and I loved it. However, teaching at Bridgend College was only for maternity cover, and my contract soon ended. My next position was with Loreal (yes, I am worth It) as a microbiologist. Loreal was great as it was a weekend position and allowed me to teach part-time at Gower College Swansea during the week.
I have spent the last 17 years teaching A-Level Biology at Gower College Swansea full time. During this time, I qualified as a teacher from the University of Wales with a PGCE. The Biology department is highly successful and renowned. The department has a 100% pass rate and grades well above the national average. I learned so much here about helping people with their education. It was where I saw firsthand how a teacher could facilitate the real transformational effects of education. I am proud to have helped so many students of varying abilities gain success in A-Level Biology.
Along with teaching at Gower College, I continued to tutor students privately. I started my tutoring business at Bridgend College and now tutor full-time online.

My Approach to Teaching
Teachers and tutors may seem unnecessary nowadays because of Google and AI. The most valuable thing a teacher can do for their students is to teach them thinking skills. Students must analyse the information in questions to achieve high grades in A-Level Biology exams. It’s not just about memorising facts like what Google and AI can provide; it’s about understanding the underlying concepts. This, and other areas, is where I can offer my professional assistance.
To provide effective help, I customise my approach for each student. I communicate with students and their parents to identify the areas that need attention and create an initial plan for improvement. These plans are regularly reviewed to ensure they continue to address the student’s specific needs. I monitor students’ progress using questions, tests, and activities, making adjustments as necessary to keep them on track. I keep parents up to date with their son/daughter’s progress.
Now, let’s explore some of my other techniques and their importance.
Simplifying Biological Concepts:
Breaking down complex biological concepts into simpler parts makes them more accessible for students. This accessibility enables students to establish meaningful connections between what they have learned and what they are currently studying. These patterns help them link ideas from the entire syllabus, giving them the confidence to tackle extended answers, such as the 25-mark questions in the AQA or the 9-mark QER questions with the WJEC/Eduqas.
Active Learning and Feedback:
I adopt a holistic tutoring approach, focusing on active learning strategies combined with feedback. These strategies include: retrieval practice, puzzles, quizzes, spaced repetition, Socratic questioning, and CRIME (chunking, rehearsal, imagery, mnemonics, and elaboration).
Understanding Scientific Language:
Learning biology is akin to acquiring a new language. Throughout the A-Level Biology course, students encounter numerous scientific terms they must understand early on. To facilitate this, I teach students comprehension strategies and the meanings of biological terminology, allowing them to develop a deep understanding of biology and apply it effectively.
Exam Technique:
Mastering exam techniques is another crucial aspect to cover. Helping students comprehend exam questions and analyse data significantly improves their grades and confidence. This skill is vital for writing precise answers needed at A-Level. It can be challenging for students to develop this level of precision, often causing frustration. Therefore, I employ various activities to guide students in honing this critical ability.
Consistent Study Habits:
I emphasise the importance of consistency in studying to all my students. Even with ample assistance, improvement can be limited without personal dedication and regularity in studying biology. Transitioning from GCSE to A-Level Biology can be overwhelming for students due to the abundance of new concepts, words, and facts. This transition is often referred to as the “big step up.” Students may feel confused, frustrated, and disappointed when progress seems lacking or test results are unsatisfactory.
I teach my students that progress occurs incrementally through consistent effort and active learning strategies. With my guidance, their efforts will compound, leading to rapid advancement. This approach makes the learning process more enjoyable and less stressful. I focus on establishing solid foundations, good study habits, and providing support.
Embracing Failure and Mistakes:
My understanding of the struggle and the value of failure sets me apart as a tutor. Although failure can be discouraging, it is crucial for making improvements. With my guidance, I help students turn failures and mistakes into valuable learning experiences.
Ensuring accessibility to biology with all its complexities is paramount to me. My experience as an examiner and teacher and my diverse science background qualify me to provide the highest quality tuition. Creating a warm and friendly atmosphere in my lessons is essential to fostering an environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions, explore, and embrace their curiosity.
Learning should never be dull; instead, it should be an exciting journey of discovery and growth. To ensure success in A-Level biology, I infuse my teaching with engaging activities, relatable examples, and stories that captivate students’ interest.

Bridgend College:
Bridgend College is a college for further education in South Wales. I taught here for approximately a year, instructing students pursuing the veterinary nurse HND qualification. My subjects included anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and the practical aspects.
Gower College, Swansea:
Gower College is a large further education college located in Goresinun, Swansea. Over the past 17 years, I have taught A-Level Biology at this institution. The biology department is sizable, with over 300 students enrolled each year. As a department member, I have contributed to its success by ensuring student achievement, resulting in a 100% pass rate and grades that exceed the national average. In addition to teaching, I organised the British Biology Olympiad competition, served as the curriculum leader for GCSE science, and acted as a personal tutor, providing support to students.
Examination Board Experience:
Throughout my 25 years of teaching, I have taught the specifications of all UK exam boards, including WJEC and Eduqas. As a result, I have a comprehensive understanding of the requirements necessary to prepare students for their exams.
Moreover, I have worked as an examiner for the WJEC, Eduqas, and Edexcel exam boards. This experience as an examiner has equipped me with valuable skills and strategies in exam techniques, which I utilise with all my students to help them achieve high marks.
Research and Laboratory Experience:
A-Level Biology encompasses a significant practical component. I possess extensive experience in experimental biology, having worked as a microbiologist, an industrial chemist, and a research scientist.
Continual Professional Development (CPD):
I am a member of the Royal Society of Biology and the Chartered College of Teaching. These affiliations enable me to stay informed about the latest developments in education and biology.
Prior to teaching I have worked in life science Reasearch and Development and in Biopharamceutical research, sales and marketing. I also worked a part-time voluntary teaching assistant in primary and seconday schools for 2 years. In 2014 I decided to change career completely to become a science teacher, so I trained at Kings College, graduating with my PGCE in 2015.
My background prior to teaching brings additional experience and skills to my teaching. Chemistry is my specialist subject. I have taught and tutored all sciences successfully to years 7 to 11, and have taught and tutored Chemistry and Biology at A level.
I am a well qualified and experienced teacher of Modern Foreign & Classical Languages with over 30 years experience teaching in local State and Independent Schools and in adult and further education colleges. I have taught French, German, Spanish, Italian, Classics and Latin from Key Stage 3 through to A- Level and am a GCSE examiner for the Pearson Edexcel exam board. I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
In my lessons, my goal is to teach you, with fun, humour and encouragement, how to use language confidently in listening, speaking, reading and writing and of course backing this up with a very sound knowledge of those building blocks called grammar. In Latin, the grammar based language study is backed up with a fun and detailed look at the historical period and the set texts. We all have differing learning needs and goals which are worked out well in advance of the first lesson so that the approach is tailor made for you so that you ultimately find the learning experience a rewarding and enjoyable one. When teaching , I use my experience of being an examiner to show you what the exam paper is really asking for and how you can ensure you get the marks and ,quite easily, exceed target. II) MY STORY SO FAR
Now for the fuller version! :) My successful teaching career so far has saw me manage some of the most challenging of UK’s classrooms for the past 20 years’+. During this time, I have consistently been ranked an inspirational grade-one “outstanding” teacher in my present school, and have delivered KS3, GCSE and A Level English, History, and Maths in the secondary and sixth-form sectors, far surpassing students’ target grades and national pass rates. Moreover, due to these outstanding results and teaching innovation that led to my lessons cited in Ofsted reports for their commitment to Equality and Diversity, I have served as Head of Department; helping us to be awarded an internal grade 1 “outstanding” rating during my tenure.
Whilst in this position, I also became Lead Internal Verifier for NEAs across the department; Lead for UCAS Applications, managing the pathway for students into top universities including Oxford and Cambridge; Lead for Departmental Higher Education Provision, in which I crafted curricula for a variety of degree level courses; and Learning Mentor for the “Gifted and Talented” Programme, that saw me guide some of the UK’s most deprived learners to become the first in their families to go to university-work which is still very close to my heart.
Furthermore, I have extensive experience of driving up educational standards within schools and colleges. Thus, as an Advanced Teaching Practitioner-tasked with developing best teaching practice, I’ve led Action Research Projects yielding invaluable data on topics such as: whether computer games can be used productively in the classroom; can Miro whiteboards better engage kinaesthetic learners, and how to increase achievement rates of learners with Protected Characteristics. Thus, through such incisive research as well as mentoring colleagues, this role saw me play a decisive role in turning around failing cohorts in some of the UK’s most challenging classrooms, improving life-chances by engaging disenchanted students and improving poor behaviour.
Furthermore, as well as my time as an examiner for a variety of GCSE/A Level exam boards, I have shown myself to be an inspirational mentor to both students and new entrants into the teaching profession. Therefore, as a teaching mentor to many new entrants on the PGCE programme, I am proud to have helped develop the next generation of the UK’s teaching talent through careful observation and support of their practice. Allied to this, I have been a mentor on the UK Government’s “Gifted and Talented” initiative. This saw me nurture the intellectual curiosity and resilience of students whose SATs results indicated great academic promise, with my guidance resulting in learners in areas of high social deprivation attaining prestigious university places at Durham and King’s College, amongst others.
Moreover, due to this long history of being a highly sought-after teacher and mentor, my educational views have been sought out if I would like to appear on national media and radio to discuss government school policy, whilst also being head-hunted to tutor the children of prominent public figures including Premiership footballers, PGA Junior golfers, England cricketers, Olympic athletes, construction tycoons, and even the family of a Nobel Prize winner, all of which has been extremely humbling.
In terms of my extracurricular activities, I am an accomplished entrepreneur. In being born into the bottom 2% of UK’s most deprived households, I have been proud to become an accomplished property developer, with my own significant UK portfolio of residential holdings and stocks, as well as being co-founder of a former nationally operating property brand. This has saw me acting as a business mentor for disadvantaged students on entrepreneurship, and how to begin their own property investment journey, which has been a real joy in guiding some of the UK’s brightest new generation of business leaders.
In my remaining spare time, I am currently engaged in the pre-reading for the start of my future PHD in International Relations, during which I will be studying the Grand Strategy of the USA and China, as they negotiate the twenty first century during a period of superpower decline. Furthermore, I enjoy travelling with my young family in Tuscany and my wife’s homeland of Mauritius, supporting my beloved Manchester United (a very interesting experience!), hiking in our home of the Malvern Hills, and playing the drums (although, not as much as I used to, with two small children!)

IV) MY EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE
In terms of my teaching and tutoring experience, as stated, I have 20 years’+ experience turning around some of the UK’s toughest classrooms, as well as challenging high achieving learners in the pursuit of academic excellence. This has seen me teach/tutor across the curriculum Key Stage-ranges (7-18 years), extending all the way to postgraduate level students. Whilst I have much experience in teaching learners lacking confidence and those with Special Educational Needs, my rigorous yet friendly approach is also well-suited to developing the most able pupils.
As Head of Department, I raised English and Maths pass rates with a 25% upwards leap in my opening two years, with most students achieving at least one grade above their targets, with Ofsted noting the rapid improvement. As regards my tutoring practice, my pass grades in subjects of English, Maths, History and Biology have been consistently outstanding, so that the vast majority of my tutees pass with strong academic grades, attaining entry to prestigious institutions across the globe. VI) SOME OF MY PROUDEST STUDENT MOMENTS
In having tutored thousands of students globally over the past 20 years, it is always hard to choose my favourite student moments. Nevertheless, here are a few, which just help to illustrate my global reach, experience, and expertise.
🏏 (Helping a Brilliant Cricketer Make the Grade): When I started tutoring this learner, confidence was low and time was short. We had to increase the GCSE English Language and Maths grades to a 6 minimum, for entry to a prestigious boarding school regarded as the cradle of many of England’s top cricketers for the national team. The time pressure was intense, as we only had 3 months to jump 3 grades. Nevertheless, with a robust study plan put in place and constant emotional support (in between the daily net sessions!), it was a wonderful moment when they received their acceptance results, with the student going on to represent the national team. Great job :)
⛳ (England’s Golf Captain Heads to the States): I began tutoring this student locally, and we bonded immediately, with each lesson always bringing much laughter due to their brilliantly dry sense of humour. With golf tournaments taking place internationally, this required much flexibility and leveraging of online learning tools to bring the required results. I was so pleased they achieved their sports scholarship at a top US university, before hopefully joining the PGA Tour. I still remain in touch when I can, and am privileged to be charting their amazing progress in the sport.
📚 (Creating an Amazing Bermudan Scholar): What began as a quick essay editing session quickly developed into a full academic partnership lasting over 5 years, during which we achieved 96% and 97% in iGCSE English Language and Literature respectively, despite sitting the exams a year early. This vast improvement led to the school offering a £28,000 scholarship to study the International Baccalaureate, and entry into the school’s elite university preparation programme. Superb work, and extremely pleasing to see such inspiring progress.
🌍 (Tutoring Sudanese Refugees Trapped in a Warzone): In one of my toughest, but most rewarding tutoring assignments, I was sought out by a family of Sudanese refugees, who’d been caught up by a recent coup. With the US embargoing the country, this meant we didn’t have access to top US tech brands like Microsoft, etc., which definitely made things tricky! Nevertheless, we ensured minimal disruption to their education throughout a very difficult political period. Now they are happily preparing to enter a European university, which was a life-changing result for them.

Besides enjoying superb results, my pupils benefit from a relaxed yet challenging atmosphere, with high commitment being expected of them. This is demonstrated in both their personal and academic growth, which is among the most rewarding aspects of tutoring for me. I offer individual tutoring online and in my home to those who are sitting GCSE and A Levels in English Literature and Language. I am also very keen to help slightly younger pupils who need help with general English skills like: reading, comprehension, grammar and punctuation, and general writing skills. A Level maths - Exam Boards (Edexcel, OCR, OCR MEI, AQA)
I always take a student-centered approach to teaching by asking students to bring their notes and talk me through the topics they feel are most difficult. My aim as your tutor would be to identify your strengths and weaknesses and build upon these appropriately. I would incorporate past paper questions very early in the curriculum to assess how well a child can apply their knowledge to answering exam questions. This will ensure that by the time the exams are sat the student will be fully prepared.
