Classics is being taught in the classroom less and less, and it may not be easy for you or your child to find someone to help satisfy their curiosity concerning all the wonders of the ancient world. Here's where I come in! My name is Helen and I tutor students of all ages in all things Classical Greek: ancient Greek literature and the language in which it is written. I am passionate about the ancient world, particularly ancient Greek history, culture and language.
I am the founder and co-ordinator of the Belfast Summer School in Latin and Classical Greek where I teach Greek at intermediate level, I am the convenor of the Classical Association in Northern Ireland and vice-chair of the Classical Association of Ireland. Based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, I am happy to meet face-to-face or online.
I am an Open Learning tutor at Queen's University Belfast and teach ancient Greek language from beginners to advanced level. I began teaching in 2011 and have experience teaching in both classroom settings and individual tuition. I provide GCSE and A level exam preparation, and assistance with university modules. Currently I teach adult beginners at Queen's University Belfast, intermediate/advanced Greek to a group of adults who have been with me for 4+ years, and am preparing a group of high school students for GCSE. In 2013, I tutored a student who required extra help with A level Greek and he gained A* in the A2 examination.
Subject expertise: I began learning Classical Greek during my undergraduate degree some 20 years ago and I completed beginners and advanced modules. I read a number of ancient Greek texts during my Masters degree and completed advanced Greek modules.

I have studied human history from the Dawn of Civilisation right through to the end of the Cold War in 1990.
This has taken me on journeys through the rise and fall of classical civilisations such as Greece and Rome. I have studied ancient Egyptian Archaeology including time spent in Crete on an archaeological dig, researching the relationship between the Minoan culture and ancient Egypt.
Methods
I studied under leading, and in some cases the authoritative, scholars in their subject fields, ranging from early Republican Rome and the Soviet Union in the Cold War, to Human Rights and International Political Theory. An interdisciplinary academic by nature, my teaching methods are governed by the same rules I maintained as a student; to interchange between rationalised logic and an empathetic understanding of others. This is a core part of my pedagogy which, as I stated in my description, will allow students to take account of their own intellect.
By customising subject dialogue and posing investigative questions tailored to each individual, students will begin to tap into their inner precociousness and start a journey of higher understanding, no matter what age or ability. Putting it simply, no child is the same and I will adapt to the needs of every student to get the best out of our sessions.

Moreover, I am happy to arrange a one-to-one with any parent or student wishing to discuss and ask questions about my methods and learning strategies, free of charge, on Skype. I have researched revolutionary teaching methodologies, been published in educational journals and have won prizes in the Department for Education at the University of Cambridge.

- Delivered a multitude of singular and sequential lessons to a GCSE class on subjects like the Roman Army and Ancient Imperialism, using my specialism in these areas to raise Intercultural Communication Competence.
- Delivered A-Level Latin classes, guiding students through un-adapted Tacitean prose and asking abstract questioning to spark interesting intellectual and historiographical debate vital in Ancient History.

Voluntary Work
During my time teaching at the John Henry Newman Catholic School, Stevenage, I assisted History and Government & Politics A-Level classes whilst providing one-to-one mentoring to students with learning disabilities. Following a successful period, I was asked to stay on and prepare the year 13 students for their final exams whilst planning and delivering lessons for Year 12 students and the lower years.
Moreover, I was influential in mentoring Year 12 students in the university application process. I provided help and advice in degree selection, personal statements and supervised extra-curricular activities that made candidates stand out (see images). Many of the students I worked closely with are attending Oxbridge or higher ranked Russell Group universities in the autumn.
In the summer term I was given the responsibility of holding my own undergraduate-style course for the lower-sixth on the topic of the 1930s Holodomor. Following extensive library research and correspondence with previous professors, I began weekly lectures and seminars. The aim was so that these students could write a final 2000-word essay, to be submitted for the annual history competition held by the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain. I formulated and created a course booklet similar to those found at undergraduate level and guided three students who eventually submitted their essays to a top 10 place, 4th place and 1st place position (£1000 cash prize).

I am an extremely patient, empathetic teacher and I tailor my lessons to each individual student. My mission is to get all students to the level required for performing as well as possible in their exams and concretely improve their knowledge of Ancient Greek, Latin, Italian and every topic related to 'Classical Civilisation'.
I am an Oxford graduate (Worcester College), with a degree in Literae Humaniores - Latin and Greek language and literature, as well as ancient and modern philosophy (BA 2013, MA 2016) I am also a professional classical singer and conductor, active around the UK. My language teaching is based on the way in which classical languages are taught at Oxford, and I believe in the development both of analytical language skills and an instinct for the art of translation. For GCSE and A-Level, it is important for vocabulary and grammar to be secure, so I encourage a rigorous approach to language, but one that is interesting. I ask for a tutee to try their hardest - as long as they do, they will be met with an enthusiastic, patient, and understanding tutor, a tutor dedicated to his teaching and his pupil. It is vital to tailor sessions to the student, and I customise my lessons for each student I have based on their needs.
I am an enthusiastic and patient tutor, and have had previous experience tutoring 11+, as well as ancient languages. I have taught 11+ English, Maths, Verbal and Non-verbal reasoning for both the CSSE and CEM exam boards.
As someone who learned both Latin and Ancient Greek ab initio as part of my university degree and is now proficient in both, I feel I am able to confidently teach the skills that enabled me to learn these languages to students of any but the most advanced level.
