I am a highly experienced teacher, performer, composer and arranger, living and working in beautiful East Devon. I love and play music of all kinds. Clarinet, Saxophone and Flute are my favourites, as nothing feels closer to the human voice.
After a first class BA in music and a PGCE that specialised in instrumental teaching, I have taught continuously in Devon schools and privately at home for over thirty years.
I offer relaxed lessons to all ages, primary to adult. I believe in an individual approach, following your interests, providing materials to suit, and sharing your love of music. As a performer, I have experience of classical, jazz, folk, pop, soul and rock, and I teach improvisation and ear skills alongside reading. I am fully familiar with the music curriculum and often support it in my lessons. I also offer a full external exam service where appropriate, using the Trinity College syllabus.

I've played in multiple bands of varying genres and currently play in 4 bands, one is an indie rock focussed band which is the most successful. I also run a post-punk shoegaze band where i write all the songs and lyrics. I play every week at Mr wolfs in the house band of the donut filler house jam and I also run a duet focussed singer songwriter band. I am able to tutor: bass, guitar, keys and vocals.
London-based Slovenian violinist and composer Katarina K. (born 1993) recently graduated in BMus Composition with a first class honours, and in MMus Performance with distinction. In May 2016 she also gained the Fellowship of the London College of Music award and received the Mona Blackman Scholarship.
Katarina began learning the violin at the age of six and has performed with many different musicians and orchestras all around Europe and Minnesota, USA. She has attended masterclasses and festivals as an active participant with world’s leading professors and won several prizes at international competitions.
Besides being an active concert violinist and performing as first violin in the Belgard String Quartet, she is pursuing a career in film composition, and in violin teaching. Her performance venues include some of the main Slovenian concert halls, as well as St. Barnabas Church in Ealing, Acton Hill Church, Cadogan Hall in London, Tower Bridge Walkways, and performances within the Ealing Film and Music Festival.
As a composer, Katarina’s pieces have been performed by LCM students, the LCM String Ensemble, and in January 2015 her piece ‘The Sixth Element’ for string orchestra was performed at the Gala Concert of the Crescendo Music Festival in Florida. Her piece ‘Tunisian Crochet’, which was premiered by the Camerata orchestra, won the LCM Composition Competition. Katarina recently composed music for Melies’ film Trip to the Moon, including a large symphonic orchestra, for which she received an exceptional mark.

Each lesson always keeps the pupil’s individual goals at its centre, and is created to develop musical fluency.
Ultimately I teach the student to teach themselves by understanding core musical concepts and developing a base of fundamental skills, these include; Ear Training - learning how to recognise the chords in any given song by ear; Strumming and Picking/Fingerpicking Technique - fluency with all standard right hand techniques is a must, and I teach these prioritising what is commonly used in their favourite styles; Reading TAB as well as Staff notation.
Creative Playing, Song Writing, and Improvising is my favourite area of playing and teaching as it helps learners find their own voice! I help to build knowledge of music theory in a practical and applicable way, exploring new concepts that will enable students to discover new sounds.
Again, this is catered to their aims - if they wish to write songs we'll look at some of their favourite artists/genres, see what they're doing, and set some aims for targets to write using some of their techniques.
If learners want to improvise, we'll explore some of our favourite improvisers - what scales to they use, how do they shape their phrases, and what articulation techniques are employed.
If learners have experience playing but need to improve techniques I can show drills and exercises that will make them a better player.
We explore a lot of aspects - from how to move economically; where to have tension and where to avoid it; tonal possibilities as well as how to structure your practice so you get the most for your time, whether you have a little or a lot.

Offering lessons in person or online, I have been performing professionally for 38 years and teaching for 26 years. I was initially taught piano by my grandfather, the renowned concert pianist and head of piano at RSAMD, Jack Wight www.*** I then completed my studies under Ms Anna Rastopchina. I currently play in an 8-piece function band as well as a jazz ensemble. I am also the musical director for shows held in the Clyde Auditorium and the Dumbarton theatre every spring. I teach piano & keyboard to all ages and stages. Roughly half my students study for the ABRSM piano grades, and so far my pupils (over 200 candidates) have a 100% pass rate. My other students play for enjoyment, learning various styles and technique. I also prepare students for the school curriculum Nat 4/5, Higher Music and Advanced Higher Music. I teach classical piano, jazz, pop, blues, music theory and composition. I tailor all lessons to the individual needs and aspirations of the student, employing various teaching styles. I also teach some pupils to play by ear, as well as improvisational skills, if requested.
