I am also a fully qualified teacher and have taught and tutored both children and adults since 2011. I have tutored online for over 3000 hours and find that for Economics and Business Studies it is as good as in person, if not better, since it is much easier to send model paragraphs and diagrams. Joss was born in the small seaside fishing town of Oban on the north west coast of Scotland and moved to Glasgow at an early age. It was in Glasgow where Joss started to take an interest in jazz, becoming involved with jazz workshops and big band at the Glasgow Arts Centre and performing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland (NYJOS).
Aged seventeen Joss moved to London to study jazz at university. He was taught harmony and theory by Pete Churchill (Jazz Education award 2007) and Nikki Iles (Jazz Education award nominee 2007 & 2009) and had guitar tuition under the guidance of multi-instrumentalist Stuart Hall and Phil Robson (Winner of 'Best Jazz musician of the Year' 2009). Joss also developed his performing skills with tuition by founding members of Loose Tubes - Eddie Parker and jazz educator - trumpeter Chris Batchelor.
After graduating with an honours degree in Jazz (BA Music Jazz Studies) Joss stayed in London for several years working professionally before studying for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and moving to Devon where he still resides. Joss continues to gig with some of the top musicians in the South West.
I am an English teacher and tutor, with over 15 years teaching and tutoring experience, particularly in preparing students for success in GCSE and A-level English Language and Literature. I have taught in 11-18 secondary schools, a sixth form college, an FE college and in independent schools, where I have coached IB and ESL learners. Currently, all my tutoring is done online. I use Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet and Google Classroom to teach my students, depending on the learner's preference. These platforms enable us to chat face to face via video link and give me the ability to share my screen and whiteboard. On Google Classroom, I set homework or assignments, providing my students with feedback and additional resources they would not usually receive with a regular tutoring session. Each student will have their own login for Google Classroom and resources will be tailored and personal to them.

I worked as a primary school teacher for 14 years and loved sharing the learning journey with the young people I taught. My approach is often playful – there is so much to be learnt using games and humour – and success relies on building relationships, agreeing goals and together working out how to reach them. Sometimes the goal might just be to travel forwards and enjoy the journey; at other times there may be a more specific target.
The best moments as a teacher are “the lightbulb moments” when something clicks in the learning and new connections are made. My goal is always to instil self-confidence in learners, to build positively on what they already know and can do, and to help them to believe that they can learn whatever they want to learn.
I am a qualified and experienced teacher. Although I have worked in secondary/ middle schools, the majority of my teaching has been in primary schools.
