I have been teaching guitar and music theory for over a decade, as well as being an active professional musician. Graduating with a 1st Class degree in Music from Southampton University, I have since worked with many world class artists including Joss Stone, Jeff Beck, Beverley Knight, Joselyn Brown, Nitin Sawhney, Lamar, Mica Paris, Incognito, Lack Of Afro, Leigh Coleman, The Voice contestant Hannah Berney, Keith Emerson, KT Tunstall… I have performed at prestigious venues and festivals worldwide including Wembley Stadium, The Royal Albert Hall, Byron Bay Blues Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival.
I have over a decade of experience teaching guitar and music theory in colleges and schools, as well as teaching private students and running group and university workshops. I have a full DBS check, Public Liability Insurance and am a member of the Musicians Union and the Registry of Guitar Tutors.
I uphold a friendly and professional attitude towards lessons, making sure the student gets the most out of their time with me and has fun. I encourage students to nurture their creativity in their musical journey, learning not just to play and reproduce what they hear, but develop their own voice, improvise and compose for themselves, be it a short riff or a symphony!
Lessons are planned around the students needs and abilities. I am able to teach all abilities from beginner to advanced, in all styles (including classical, rock, pop, funk and jazz) on both electric and acoustic guitar. Sight reading, reading tablature, and music theory are all taught within the lesson and I am able to tutor students through performance and theory exams. It’s not all about results, but for students looking to take grade exams I offer Rock School, RGT, LCM, ABRSM and Trinity College exam boards. I have a proven track record of success, with over 95% of students achieving a Distinction, and 100% achieiving Merit or higher. I can also support students with GCSE and A-Level studies in Music.
When I’m not teaching, performing or behind a guitar, you’ll probably find me walking through the Devon countryside with my miniature dachshund or enjoying some good food and local ale with my wife and baby son.
Joss was born in the small seaside fishing town of Oban on the north west coast of Scotland and moved to Glasgow at an early age. It was in Glasgow where Joss started to take an interest in jazz, becoming involved with jazz workshops and big band at the Glasgow Arts Centre and performing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland (NYJOS).
Aged seventeen Joss moved to London to study jazz at university. He was taught harmony and theory by Pete Churchill (Jazz Education award 2007) and Nikki Iles (Jazz Education award nominee 2007 & 2009) and had guitar tuition under the guidance of multi-instrumentalist Stuart Hall and Phil Robson (Winner of 'Best Jazz musician of the Year' 2009). Joss also developed his performing skills with tuition by founding members of Loose Tubes - Eddie Parker and jazz educator - trumpeter Chris Batchelor.
After graduating with an honours degree in Jazz (BA Music Jazz Studies) Joss stayed in London for several years working professionally before studying for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and moving to Devon where he still resides. Joss continues to gig with some of the top musicians in the South West.
I years of experience, in ages. My main profession is inand group music lessons, within primary schools. I have many private music students - which I have now adapted to teaching, where needed, via skype/zoom or using other (Exeter Music Holiday School), which has been running for 7 years. We offer workshops and individual lessons, throughmainstream school holiday. I also play the flute in a Ceilidh band, play in the pit for panto, and have perfomed on various instruments (including vocals), for group concerts and individual performances.
As the 'WindI am having a wondeful experinece so far, to brush up on my basic Bassoon skills - which is my next planned venture.

I am constantly learning a new instrument, and take It keeps me on track with how it feels to learn and coping wi nerves. Empathy and connections is very it is, to feel that your child is safe and happy with a mentor. This is why I encourge the take-up of a 'free' initial lesson, so that you feel happy any specialist qualifications in working with children and adults with additional needs, I do have lots of experience. I have many wondefullly, within these spectrums, whom have taught me so much. I am more than happy to re-invent the wheel and nurture what is important to each person. My eldest son is a child with autism, and he is an incredibly gifted musicican, who learns by ear and repitition (even though he can read music prefectly well) - as this is how feels his way though it, and this makes his very happy. Now I do all my lessons on line, either by Skype, Zoom or any other equivalent .It is cheaper for the pupil, no travelling, so no fuel used, and easier all round as the timings can be changed easily on either side, to suit any sudden problems.
I teach reading music as a given, right from the beginning. Either classical or acoustic but no specific styles, i. e. country, folk, blues etc. No, I will teach you to play properly with tutor books and additional material and with the knowledge gained you will eventually be able to play in whatever style suits you, but I will not teach a style at the lesson.
Having 60 books of guitar music published in 5 different publishers, and having played, arranged, transcribed and written all forms of guitar music since my teens, I am uniquely equipped to teach anyone whether a beginner, or an advanced player or any level in between.
I am often asked to transcribe unpublished classical guitar recordings onto sheet music which I will do happily for a fee, should anyone be interested.
I now have my own classical guitar sheet music and CD review site at www.allclassicalguitar.co.uk and so my working life is completely music based.

Nathan has been playing Guitar and studying Music for over 15 years, from Primary School right through to the current day in University. Beginning just under a year ago, Nathan has thoroughly enjoyed passing on his enthusiasm and passion for Guitar and Music alike through tutoring. Nathan has several qualifications in Music, including GCSE, A Level and First Class honours in Musical Arts (BA) and, starting with a Masters, he hopes to add to these qualifications in the future. Nathan teaches Guitar from beginners to intermediate level players and teaches Music Theory up to grade 5 of all ages. Nathan’s lessons include breaking down the fundamentals of both guitar ad theory, from posture, fingering technique, scales, arpeggios, chords, rhythm, melody and anything else the student wishes to learn. He will teach any exam boards requested, preparing his students for their respective exams by breaking down each technical component previously mentioned with specific focus given to each section of the exam. Whether the student wishes to focus on melody, rhythm, chords or just playing their favourite band’s songs, he will devote all his energy to providing the required tutoring in helping his students fulfil these wishes, whilst enjoying themselves in the process.
Nathan will give his all to teaching as many genres as he possibly can, although has vast experience in classical and pop music, particularly Funk, Rock and Jazz. His first lesson with any student will be relaxed, with the aim of figuring out the students skill level and what they wish to achieve through their lessons. The student simply needs to let Nathan know their priorities in terms of what they wish to learn and their enthusiasm in achieving this. It is common for Nathan to prepare warm-up exercises for his students, such as stretching exercises for the wrists and hands, along with exercises to develop the technique of each hand, for example finger/plectrum exercises and chromatic scales.
