I am an experienced Primary School teacher with 8 years of experience teaching children aged 3-11. I live in the Durham area and currently teach in Gateshead. I have experience of year 2 and 6 SATs prepration. I cover a range of primary subjects including Mathematics, English and Phonics.

I chose to study Mathematics at A-Level and then univeristy not out of some deep love for the subject, but simply because it was fun and challenging. It is problem solving to the extreme which requires grit and optimism. Far from being the stereotypical maths student, I enjoyed music (I played in a band during university), surfing and mountaineering. Having a wide interest base gives me life experience that means I am approachable and able to relate easily to people.
In sixth form I tutored a Year 9 pupil heading into GCSEs who lacked confidence when it came to Maths. Over the proceeding months we focussed on areas of struggle and building confidence. She passed her GCSEs and is now happily studying in univeristy. This lead to me teaching GCSE level Maths in Tuscany, Italy, over a month during my second year at Cardiff University. This was a unique and rewarding experience, with a fair share of communication challenges due to teaching in what was for some students their second or third langauge! However, I was commended on my communication skills and positive nature.
After completing univeristy in June 2020, I worked various jobs while preparing for Royal Marines training. I began Recruit Training early 2022. Ultimately I was unsuccesful during training but am now happily studying a MSc in Economics at Durham Univeristy. Hi! My name is Tom and I will be graduating from Durham University in June 2020 with an MMath (Hons) Mathematics, where I am predicted a first class. During my school years, I received 12A*s in my GCSE exams, as well as two A*s in maths and further maths at A Level, receiving full UMS in all but one of my final year exams. At Durham I have focused on pure mathematics, studying Algebraic Topology, Riemannian Geometry, Representation Theory and much more. In addition I received the John Crowther prize for performance in third year exams.
I have experience teaching GCSE and A Level maths to students from a variety of backgrounds, this has mainly been on a 1-1 basis.
I am a firm believer in problem based learning for maths. Most of our sessions will involve working through problems together. In addition, I will set weekly homework (not too long, don't worry!) to aid in the learning. I will mark these before the next session and we will discuss any problems together. In addition, after each session I will produce a short summary of our session, pointing out key facts and problems that the student should be aware of and need to focus on. I am convinced everyone can do well in maths. I hope to instil a confidence in my tutees that maths isn't too bad and that it is certainly doable, hopefully even enjoyable!

I am a dedicated, hardworking and enthusiastic individual who has experience across the entire primary age range from Year 1 up to Year 6. Throughout each unit, I am also able to adapt the sequence of lessons as the unit progresses to ensure that the children are fully confident in the grammar, structure and organisational features of the text before they write independently. To ensure that there is a wide coverage across the curriculum the children are exposed to a wide variety of writing types including: descriptions, poetry, story writing, letters and instructions. Each of these pieces of writing have started with a hook to capture the interest and curiosity of each child in the class.
I have also been able to plan alongside schemes that are in school and been able to plan a Maths curriculum independently for different year groups. At my current school, I have been able to work alongside the Power Maths and White Rose scheme. Through these schemes I have also been able to use my teacher's judgement and assessment for learning techniques to adapt and add to the schemes to ensure that each child is fully “fluent” in any given topic before moving onto problem solving and reasoning questions. Previous to this I have worked in a number of different schools with a variety of backgrounds during my time on supply. An example of this would be teaching on a long term placement through supply placement. I was teaching in a mixed Y4/5 class at a school in Middlesbrough. The class was 100% EAL with a high proportion of SEN needs. Although it was a Y4/5 class, they were only working at aY1/2 level. Through the placement I have been able to demonstrate effective behaviour management strategies due to the fact that it was impossible to stick to one strategy. This required me to constantly adapt my strategies to the needs of the class on a regular basis. Furthermore, through quality first teaching, exciting and engaging lessons and an excellent understanding of each of the children’s needs I was able to make accelerated progress and work towards closing the gap from their KS1 trajectory to where they should be in terms of age related expectations. During my time at the school I was also able to work with a variety of external agencies in order to aid the provision of the children and ensure that each of their needs was being met.
