I have worked at various schools including special needs. In these organisations I have worked with young people including those on the autistic spectrum, those with behavioural learning problems and those suffering from mental health issues. I have always found it is key to strike up a good relationship with the young person, understand their problems and work with them to help them develop mentally and socially as well as helping them to gain the best outcome for themselves. I find this immensely rewarding.
I have led Maths departments at three of the schools that I have worked at. I have taught GCSE, IGCSE, GCSE Statistics and Functional Skills level 1 and 2 This entailed researching new Maths ideas including the Singapore method and the Complete Maths curriculum. I have presented teaching ideas to fellow practitioners at my school and others. I have been the school’s examination officer and have marked examination scripts for Pearsons. I have taken part in the school development, for example looking to build maths into the whole curriculum. I have always sought to develop as a practitioner and looked to do something that was advantageous to the school I was working with.
As a practitioner working for the benefit of the young people, it is essential to differentiate their work to give them the maximum opportunity to succeed.
In recent years there has been a huge growth in the number of agencies offering maths tuition at very competitive rates. After graduating from Hatfield Polytechnic in 1987, I spent many years in industry, working in the UK and overseas. I worked in various roles including project management and other senior management positions.
My two children were born in 2002 and 2004, and at that time I decided to change my career and applied to Southampton University in September 2005 to take Postgraduate Certificate in Education leading to Qualified Teacher Status, as I had always had a passion for education and thought now is the time for a change.
In 2007, I completed my induction as a teacher and promptly moved to a new school as a Second in Department in Mathematics. I have stayed at that school ever since, but my position has changed to where my role is now a combination of teaching and data management for the whole school. In this position, I have a clear picture of not only the mathematics that needs to be taught but how important that is to the future prospects of the students.
As I approach retirement, I am looking to continue teaching but in a tutoring capacity, as I really enjoy the feeling when a student understands a concept for the first time and looks forward to learning more.
I possess several years of successful experience of teaching Key Stage 3 and 4, having taught this age range in a variety of settings. Also, I possess the experience of managing students that are struggling in Math by organizing remedial classes for them.

I always use this principle in my life (Pareto principle) because I need to be super efficient and this is the best way to be. You can guess now, we will study mathematics together and you will also have some bonus tips about studies, because every module is different and you don't study mathematics like you study philosophy.
