After graduating from Hatfield Polytechnic in 1987, I spent many years in industry, working in the UK and overseas. I worked in various roles including project management and other senior management positions. My two children were born in 2002 and 2004, and at that time I decided to change my career and applied to Southampton University in September 2005 to take Postgraduate Certificate in Education leading to Qualified Teacher Status, as I had always had a passion for education and thought now is the time for a change. In 2007, I completed my induction as a teacher and promptly moved to a new school as a Second in Department in Mathematics. I have stayed at that school ever since, but my position has changed to where my role is now a combination of teaching and data management for the whole school. In this position, I have a clear picture of not only the mathematics that needs to be taught but how important that is to the future prospects of the students. As I approach retirement, I am looking to continue teaching but in a tutoring capacity, as I really enjoy the feeling when a student understands a concept for the first time and looks forward to learning more. |
