English is the love of my life. I believe that every child can be taught to write creatively and to enjoy reading. Learning English is not just about passing eleven plus exams. It is about learning how to communicate effectively, whether that is transporting your reader to another world or winning someone over to your point of view. Children will prepare for all types of writing and reading comprehension as demanded by different schools for the eleven plus. Drawing on an extensive bank of materials, I tailor the tuition to suit your child’s strengths and weaknesses. I place a strong emphasis on spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary through a varied mix of games and activities. I focus on exam technique using past and practice 11+/pre-test papers and offer advice on interview preparation. My aim is to make what can sometimes be a challenging process an enjoyable one. All my students are well prepared and confident when they sit their entrance exams and are able to tackle all types of eleven plus exam format with ease. They gain places at their chosen schools. I have been a private tutor for nearly six years for multiple companies - both in person and online. I have hosted exchange programmes to help students with English as a foreign language. I have helped to run summer schools. I have been educated at two Russell Group universities: my undergraduate degree in English Literature and History was acquired from the University of Exeter, while my postgraduate degree in English PGCE with QTS was acquired from the University of Oxford. I have been teaching English in a state comprehensive school for nearly four years, in which I have taught/still am teaching KS3 English, GCSE English (both Language and Literature), and A Level English Language and Literature (all with AQA). I specialise in teaching English to any secondary aged students; however, I have experience in teaching the eleven plus and am also able to help KS2 students with preparation for English at secondary school. I could tutor locally in Witney; however, due to my long working hours, online tutoring is preferable.
I have considerable experience working through the whole of KS2. I am fully up-to-date with curriculum requirements and enjoy preparing dynamic and enjoyable lessons in order to help my pupils to achieve their full potential. I am able to support and challenge pupils with differing current levels of attainment. I currently teach in Year 6 and have extensive experience of and success in SAT preparation. My approach to teaching is one in which I use my experience to quickly and thoroughly assess where the strengths of my pupils lie and where they may be experiencing challenges and gaps in understanding. This approach enables me to develop a trust with my pupils which is key to a successful learning relationship. I feel that it is important to always keep learning fresh and relevant and to ensure that my pupils can see that I am enjoying working with them. I am always very positive and sensitive to the learning needs of all children and place great importance on their enjoyment of every lesson.

About Me: Experience & Interests
Having qualified as a teacher in 2004, I have been teaching at Secondary level (including A Level) for 16 years. My first two years in the profession were spent teaching in Bassaleg School in Newport before moving to Oxfordshire 14 years ago, to teach in a comprehensive school in Abingdon. In 2008, I became Head of English, a role I held for 6 years prior to having children. I have been tutoring privately for the past 6 years, with tutees ranging from Year 5 to Year 11. My area of interest and expertise for tutoring has mainly focused on KS4, but I also have experience in tutoring younger students for their Year 6 SATS Exam and for the 13+ Grammar School examination. In my role as Head of English, I oversaw Literacy across the Curriculum Interventions and Developments as well as mentoring trainee interns and delivering professional development sessions to newly qualified teachers. As a mentor for the PGCE teacher-training course at The University of Oxford, I have also regularly assisted the university in interviewing applicants for their course. As an examiner for AQA Literature, I have had training in understanding the requirements of the new 2015 specification, as well as three years’ experience of grading exam scripts. I am also an assessor for the National Foundation for Educational Research, an independent provider of research in education. I have experience in teaching various exam boards including AQA, WJEC, Edexcel and IGCSE. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the violin and piano, going to the gym, swimming and skiing.

Approaches to Tutoring
Different students require different approaches to learning and so I work hard to tailor my sessions according to the needs of the student. In addition to one-to-one online tutoring, I also offer paired tuition (with someone of a similar age and ability) and small group tuition (Maximum of 6 per class).
