I am a pianist and composer and currently a PhD music student at the University of Manchester specialising in notated composition. I was awarded a Master's with distinction from Newcastle University in 2019 where my main focus was on composition but undertaking a music analysis project as well. I am an experienced private tutor and my compositions have been workshopped by ensembles like Psappha and Opera North. My latest project with Distractfold can be found on the additional link in my profile. I have also presented my research and compositions in international music conferences like the Penn State 2021 New Music Festival and Symposium. I have experience teaching children and adults, preparing them for Trinity College London and ABRSM graded exams in piano performance. I have also tutored students for GCSE and A-levels submissions in music. My postgraduate studies in composition and music analysis provide unique insight into each piece to help every student tackle the theoretical and structural challenges, inform their interpretation and develop their musicality along with their technique. I strongly believe in fostering creativity and encourage composition and improvisation as an integral part of the learning process as well as exposure to a wide range of music as a listener to help students find their inclinations.
Music lessons in Tetbury, UK.
I'm a professional Music lecturer and tutor, Guitar teacher and Bass tutor based in the West Midlands. As a Music tutor/instrumental tutor I have 1000+ hours of teaching experience, I hold a Popular Music Degree and in a College employment setting I have 14+ years experience of teaching college students from ages 16+ to adults in a range of levels (1-5).
I know every student’s journey is different, and my aim is to meet each student where they’re at, learning through Music we discuss their aims and develop the curriculum to develop their understanding.
As a musician I play in a variety of bands and performance situations as well as session work for bands and for artists up and down the UK.
I’m a Bass player for a Midlands based punk band who have released three albums and with this I have played festivals around the UK.
I play Guitar for a folk/rock band, a high end function band and also for a Queen tribute band.
As a teacher I work closely with pupils to develop personal goals, and work together on a simple plan on how to reach them. I believe understanding the reason the student is taking lessons and playing guitar/bass or embarking on other musical developments is fundamental to providing quality tuition, so I strive to create plans with the pupil to support their aims. Each lesson always keeps the pupil’s individual goals at its centre, and is created to develop musical fluency.
Ultimately I teach the student to teach themselves by understanding core musical concepts and developing a base of fundamental skills, these include; Ear Training - learning how to recognise the chords in any given song by ear; Strumming and Picking/Fingerpicking Technique - fluency with all standard right hand techniques is a must, and I teach these prioritising what is commonly used in their favourite styles; Reading TAB as well as Staff notation.
Creative Playing, Song Writing, and Improvising is my favourite area of playing and teaching as it helps learners find their own voice! I help to build knowledge of music theory in a practical and applicable way, exploring new concepts that will enable students to discover new sounds.
Again, this is catered to their aims - if they wish to write songs we'll look at some of their favourite artists/genres, see what they're doing, and set some aims for targets to write using some of their techniques.
If learners want to improvise, we'll explore some of our favourite improvisers - what scales to they use, how do they shape their phrases, and what articulation techniques are employed.
If learners have experience playing but need to improve techniques I can show drills and exercises that will make them a better player.
We explore a lot of aspects - from how to move economically; where to have tension and where to avoid it; tonal possibilities as well as how to structure your practice so you get the most for your time, whether you have a little or a lot.
Shaun provides music tuition for GCSE and A Level courses for Edexcel, AQA, OCR and WJEC Boards. He is able to help you develop your understanding and awareness for the composition, listening and performing elements of the course.
"The Musica Nova is a name to be held in respect by those engaged in promoting sound artistic values within youthful musical circles. The establishment bears the hallmark of excellence. Its principal, the distinguished Russian pianist and singer Eugenia Terentieva, ensures that her students enjoy tuition of the highest quality. Musica Nova deserves to attain outstanding success in the field of scholastic advancement"

Musica Nova, the International Academy of Music, is a unique bilingual establishment in the UK that combines the best of British and Russian principles of teaching and offers music lessons and complex Certificate programmes for children (starting as early as 3. 5 years old) and adults (up to advanced professional level).
It has six categories of classes geared to maximise the potential of the student in musical styles and genres as diverse as classics, jazz, pop, dance, and drama. It was founded in 2001 and is based in the London Borough of Camden, within walking distance of King’s Cross St. Pancras tube station (zone 1). Thanks to the Academy, children, teenagers and adults from all ethnic backgrounds, including the Russian-speaking community in London, are being introduced to a beautiful world of music, enabling them to develop and improve their talent and to embark on professional music activity.
Musica Nova has established partnership links with artistic management agencies, record companies and cultural institutions. Since March 2011 the Musica Nova has held membership of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) one of the major umbrella organisations in the UK joining professional teachers and musicians. In 2012 the Musica Nova took part in the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Music Education held at the Palace of Westminster. Recent documentaries about the Academy have been broadcast by the BBC, major national and international Russian TV channels and the Russian Hour programme on the Digital Sky TV channel.
All teachers are highly qualified professional musicians with a Conservatoire education, and with vast teaching experience with legal working status in the UK. All new teachers are carefully assessed and vetted in accordance with DFES regulations and employment legislation and with the Musica Nova’s own quality control procedures.
Lessons and Curriculum
Lessons take place in soundproof studios, equipped with pianos and elegantly designed to bring a sense of intimacy and discipline to the teaching. Both one-to-one and group sessions of up to eight students, are run at the Academy to fit in with students and parent’s busy lifestyles. If requested, lessons can also take place at client’s home (within the London area) and online.
The programmes are specially designed to lead and direct students from very first steps in music to Certificate (Grades 1 – 8) and Degree programmes (Performing and Teaching Diplomas) with participation in concerts, recording projects, performances at the international festivals and competitions. The ‘Music Wonderland’ is an innovative authoring programme offered to younger students. In close collaboration with child psychologists it assists in teaching music to children with dyslexia, speech and concentration problems.
In 2014 the Musica Nova introduced new educational programmes. Free concert events and workshops popularising good quality classical and contemporary music are open for children and adults in the Camden Russian communities in London.
Every year over 200 students are successfully assessed and receive Diplomas from major national examination boards. Students continue further music education in colleges and conservatoires in the UK (Royal Academy of Music, Royal Music College, Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Cambridge and Oxford Universities) and Russia (State Conservatoire in Saint Petersburg, Gnessin Institution in Moscow).
Performances and Competitions
Students and teachers of the "Musica Nova" Academy have successfully performed in front of the members of the Royal Family, members of Parliament, politicians and celebrities.

My wide experience teaching children and teenagers ensures that students will enjoy learning their instrument while making real progress. I've taught flute as a peripatetic teacher since the age of 17 and trained as a secondary music teacher in my home town of Sydney, Australia. I have since worked in secondary schools and more recently as Director of Music in several schools in the UK and abroad. I am currently Director of Music at a London Preparatory School. I believe studying music should be primarily about enriching one's life, and aim to make learning about theory and composition as practical and fun as possible. Music requires precision and exacting skill but I believe it is possible for everyone to improve their appreciation and understanding of music. Music is an incredible means of self expression and helping students understand more than just the technical elements is very important to me.
I have worked with a wide age range of students, from pre-schoolers to adults. Every person is an individual and I will tailor our lessons to your needs and aims. As a parent to a child with ASD and Irlen syndrome, I am able to apply strategies to assist other pupils with similar needs and have an appreciation of particular challenges which can arise from these.
