I am experienced and skilled in teaching printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, textiles, print and recently digital textiles. I have taught in secondary schools and Further Education for 15 years and ran a private Saturday Club for primary age children for 3 years. Previous to teaching I was an art therapist and art technician. As a practising artist I have recent industry experience in exhibiting my work and have organised projects where I have given my students work experience. I have delivered GCSE, A levels, Cambridge International A level, BTEC and UAL qualifications up to and including Foundation Diploma. I currently teach A level Art, Textiles and Photograph, GCSE and Key stage 3 part-time at an Outstanding Secondary School in London. I have recently attended A level and GCSE standardisation and A* courses as part of my continued professional development. I provide a fully equipped artist studio and offer 1:1 and group work (Photoshop, scanner, oil paints, canvas, acrylic and watercolour, easel, drawing table, sculpture tresel, drawing: all media, printmaking: relief and mono printing, sculpture: mixed media, sewing machine, mini-library). You can view my teaching portfolio online. I work very much with the student's individual needs and tailor sessions accordingly. I bring a wealth of experience in my subject area and can support students at whatever stage they are at. Including, exam and coursework workshops including the development of their written critical and analytical skills. I teach traditional and contemporary art and design and textile skills and as a contemporary artist I have a good awareness of the current art scene, artists, exhibitions and techniques.

I am a practising artist with 18 years’ teaching experience (15 years as Head/Director of art) I can support all pupils and adult learners at any level. I currently work as Director of Faculty in one of the UK’s leading Independent Boarding Schools. (Fine art was the best performing subject in my school at A Level Summer 2019.)
Those wishing to make the next step into Further or Higher education will benefit from additional support to enrich their body of work for portfolio interview. I work with GCSE and A Level pupils to help improve their www.*** ;
Or perhaps you’ve always wanted to improve your drawing or painting skills simply for pleasure and to learn the rudiments of direct observational study; life drawing has been a mainstay for as long as I can remember, and hundreds of younger learners and senior artists have benefitted from private tuition since I started teaching.
The discipline of drawing and art practice in general, rewards individuals with the sanctuary of mindfulness in addition to the benefit of skill-based progress
I can teach across all media to groups or individuals – even demonstrate how to throw a pot! – I am happy to receive bespoke enquiries.
"Stuart is a great teacher, he always makes every class interesting & different each week, inspired us by using various materials & techniques in different ways stretching our www.*** is always positive with his criticism which encouraged you to produce some great works, this makes the classes enjoyable discussing our work together, feeling the group were a team.
His interest & encouragement has inspired me to continue with life drawing. "
Anita Page
"If I have any regret of my time being tutored by Stuart it is that I only joined his group a year before he moved away from Bury St Edmunds yet even in that short time with his remarkable skills as a teacher I found my drawing skills generally; and figure drawing skills in particular; improved considerably. Because of his instruction and guidance and the foundation it gave me my art has developed and evolved to embrace most media and other genre. I will always be grateful to him."
Paul Lewins
"Stuart manages to bring variety in his approach to classes. Some weeks he positions tables propped upright on their ends and we work in various media on paper the full size of the model. Sometimes we draw a model who moves in various ways in rotation. Our still life evenings are also different, he brings in a pigs head for us to draw, and also a brace of pheasants. Stuart is always very encouraging. He covers all the basics in teaching us how to measure the body by eye, by aligning different parts of the body, and demonstrates different media techniques. "
Caroline Bell
"Stuart came with enthusiasm and willingness to share his skills. Within the group hw was able to bring out individual artistic talents. He gave us confidence to attempt many different techniques.
My art abilities are definitely built on groundings set by him"

I have many years experience teaching all key stages at secondary level and working with transition groups from primary schools. As Head of Art & Design for approximately 15 years this has given me a good grounding and understanding of curriculum and examination requirements. Therefore I am able to offer the best advice and guidance for pupils needing help with coursework portfolios. The many years of teaching has also enabled me to build upon a range of skills across a variety of media. From home, I have a purpose build workshop from which I run various workshops for ceramic handbuilding and throwing, also stone sculpting. As a practicing artist I am able to offer tutees, whether secondary school age or adult, a greater understanding of how an artist develops not only their ideas but their marketing value too. Other than the workshops at my home I have also been commissioned by several companies to run workshops with groups of adults or children. Being able to differentiate abilities in these circumstances is an essential skill as is forward planning and preparation.

I am a Central Saint Martins MA Fine Art graduate, with a BA in classical painting techniques awarded by the University of Arts in Bucharest, and have more than five years experience in teaching art to all ages (including very young students). I have been collaborating on artistic educational projects with the National Gallery and Watermans Arts Center and with various schools and cultural institutes in London. I have a track record of helping students achieve their highest potential in mastering various fine art techniques and being admitted at top art and architecture universities or obtaining excellent results in GCSE, A-level exams and Art Scholarship examinations. I also have a personal method that helps adult learners that are beginners in painting and drawing techniques get excellent artistic skills and discover a personal, expressive style. As an artist, I have experience in classical painting techniques as well as contemporary art (such as installation art, conceptual or participatory art projects) and I strongly believe in the unique creative potential of each individual, which I hope my art classes also help uncover. I currently teach fine art classes for ages 4 to adult learners at London School of Arts and collaborate on educational projects with galleries, as well as following my own artistic practice. My art projects sometimes blur the lines between the artistic and the educational fields, and I consider teaching a form of art. I have, therefore, a very personal approach to teaching and often collaborate artistically with my students.

Art is for everyone! It's down to confidence, practise and allowing yourself to make mistakes!
Observation is key exploring different mark making and you're off to a good start.
It doesn't matter if you think you can't draw. If you are new to drawing I will show you simple techniques to help you gain the confidence you need.
If you are a GCSE art student or studying A level Art, I can give you extra support to get you through and help you Hain the higher grades.

I have been an Art & Design teacher in the Southampton area since September 1997. My experience of working as a free-lance artist/illustrator has been an essential skill throughout my teaching career, providing learners with a wider knowledge of creative practice during tutorials and group presentations and giving the student an experienced insight of working as a professional practitioner either after their degree or in terms of work based learning after a sixth form programme.
I have always fostered excellent relationships with my students and particularly prize the strong working relationships I have developed with a range of learners. I also feel in some cases that it is important to develop links with parents allowing them to support and encourage the students further in their education.
Within my time in education I have produced dynamic and creative areas of learning which offer a range of academic and vocational courses where students have experienced studying from level 1 to level 4. I have assisted younger students with their progression from school as well as adult learners into college and onto higher education and employment. I aim to develop students work to meet or exceed the requirements of their expected qualifications, learning goals or employment. I ensure that the students feel happy and confident in their studies. I strongly believe that students should be able to express themselves and understand the world around them. Through their studies students should be able to communicate their thoughts and ideas and demonstrate the development of their practical skills. I am enthusiastic about encouraging students through my pastoral role to research their subjects and their progressionary aims using appropriate resources such as journals, books and appropriate internet sites. I have provided good liaison throughout my time in education between schools, colleges and local HE providers such as Southampton Solent University, The Arts University Bournemouth and Winchester School of Art. I am always constantly striving to improve student confidence through high quality teaching and learning. I am now keen to use and develop my skills and knowledge within the wider area of art and design teaching and I am particularly excited about tutoring individual students to fulfil their individual goals.

I have multiple qualifications in Art, Media and Design subjects and have taught Design and Technology at KS3, 4, 5 for over 13 years. I have been a Subject Leader and am currently an Assistant Progress Leader in an Art and Design Secondary School.
I am happy to tutor KS3 and 4 online, specialising in the new 1-9 DT GCSE's. We can focus on specific areas or we can look at general concepts such as tone and shading, rendering, theory work or whatever else you feel that you are struggling with.
I do not offer meeting up in person, it will be totally online based. I charge £25 for a full hour or £12 for 30 mins. Payments will need to be made to my paypal account BEFORE the lesson takes place. If for any reason there are internet issues I am happy to reschedule, there will be no additional charges for this. The areas you wish to be tutored in or discussed need to be agreed by email at least 24 hours before the session- this is for your own benefit, so that I can have all the necessary resources available prior to the session.
