With more advanced players, I like to listen to your playing and work out a route map from there. We'll normally discuss topics such as music history, shaping your phrasing and working on adding colour to your pieces as well as nails (if applicable) and technique.

Offering lessons in person or online, I have been performing professionally for 38 years and teaching for 26 years. I was initially taught piano by my grandfather, the renowned concert pianist and head of piano at RSAMD, Jack Wight www.*** I then completed my studies under Ms Anna Rastopchina. I currently play in an 8-piece function band as well as a jazz ensemble. I am also the musical director for shows held in the Clyde Auditorium and the Dumbarton theatre every spring. I teach piano & keyboard to all ages and stages. Roughly half my students study for the ABRSM piano grades, and so far my pupils (over 200 candidates) have a 100% pass rate. My other students play for enjoyment, learning various styles and technique. I also prepare students for the school curriculum Nat 4/5, Higher Music and Advanced Higher Music. I teach classical piano, jazz, pop, blues, music theory and composition. I tailor all lessons to the individual needs and aspirations of the student, employing various teaching styles. I also teach some pupils to play by ear, as well as improvisational skills, if requested. I prefer to teach from my own house, where I have a beautiful Yamaha U3 piano, as well as a Nord digital 88 piano, Roland Juno DS keybpoard/synthesizer, vintage Hammond organ and Leslie speaker and recording equipment. Lessons are generally an hour long, except for young students, where I would recommend a shorter lesson of 45 or 30 minutes. MSc Project Title: - Design of a modular control system for a Scanning Force Microscope (SFM) data acquisition system.
MSc Project Background: - Scanning Force Microscopy is currently an active area of research within the School of Physics, which has a particularly interest in the study of magnetic materials and media for high density recording. Scanning probe microscopy is a new technique for investigating the topography and structure of a surface on a scale down to the atomic level. A miniature probe tip attached to a cantilever is scanned across the surface to be examined and a range of force interactions are sensed by measuring the deflection of the sensor; - the height of the tip above the surface is maintained constant by a control system.
MSc Project Description: - This project involved the modelling, design and construction of a set of feedback control modules for the Scanning Force Microscope (SFM). Initially, the feedback loop of the SFM was modelled and a PI control loop designed. This was then implemented in high quality analogue circuitry as a set of modules suitable for a 19" rack system. The modules were then inserted in the existing data acquisition system and performance tested during imaging. A flexible system was achieved which can be altered or added to easily, when necessary, in the future.

Employers Business: Ferranti, Bellshill were involved in the manufacture and testing of automatic test equipment and navigational aids which were fitted on the Harrier, Phantom FGR2, Mitsubishi F1, Nimrod MR2, Tornado and Jaguar aircrafts.
Job Description: My duties as Test Engineer, responsible to the Chief Test Engineer was testing computer systems/peripherals which included a variety of test functions, sample testing and fault finding, repairing digital and analogue circuitry (microprocessor based) to component level and investigating defects. At the latter stage, specific duties included testing and de-bugging complex multi-layer digital and analogue cards using specialised automatic test equipment then commissioning the complete system incorporating all cards and system software.

Job Title Systems Commissioning Engineer
Employer Business: Ferranti were also World leaders in Space guidance and had been designing and improving their inertial systems for over twenty years. At the time GEC Ferranti were supplying the inertial measuring system for the Ariane multi-national satellite launch vehicle. This system formed part of the overall guidance and control system fitted in the vehicles third stage equipment bay. The heart of the launcher electrical system consisted of two units; an inertial platform and a electronic unit. It provided velocity and altitude data in digital form for the on board computer and in analogue form for the telemetry system.
Job Description: My duties as System Commissioning Engineer involved simulating testing the overall electronic system until it was well within the systems specification. Commissioning also involved reliability tests, calibration tests, mechanical checks and many various climatic and environmental tests, i. e. vibration tests, bump and shock tests, drop tests, fragility tests and temperature tests (-70C to 100C).
