Learning the piano

The piano was invented in 1700 by Bartolomeo Cristofori of Italy. Piano, also called pianoforte, is a keyboard musical instrument having wire strings that sound when struck by felt-covered hammers operated from a keyboard. The standard modern piano contains 88 keys and has a compass of seven full octaves plus a few keys.

The piano is one of the most popular instruments in the world. What makes this instrument so special is that it allows you to play both the melody and the accompaniment at the same time.

Why learn to play the piano?

Playing the piano is an extremely creative activity. Playing the piano has shown to improve cognition and enhance learning and memory which has a positive impact on your creative thinking. The complexity of piano playing requires several parts of the brain to be involved simultaneously. That way your brain is active during your lessons

Another great aspect of learning the piano is the difficulty of combining intellectual and physical capacities at the same time. This is extraordinarily challenging, and therefore demands you to stay focused and alert at all times which develops your capability of concentration and awareness.

Is the piano a difficult instrument to learn?

The piano is a great choice for a beginner musician but it is rather a challenging instrument to master. When you start learning the piano, musical theory can be a bit hard to learn but with the help of a tutor it's much easier. Also a large part of playing the piano successfully is learning the correct posture, hand position, and finger movement.

When you become comfortable with these things your playing will get better and better.  It may look easy at the beginning but playing the piano needs a lot of practice and commitment to master it.

When should you start playing the piano?

A great plus of the piano is that the keys are easy to operate and even students as young as five years old can learn to play it. They probably won’t respond well to an adult-imposed learning structure but you should let them explore the instrument. Studies show that the best age to start playing the piano is typically between the ages of six and nine years old. But what is amazing about the piano is that you can start learning it no matter what age you are.

Even if you are an adult it's not too late to master the instrument.  No matter when you start, you can have the enjoyment of playing the piano, plus all the great mental, physical, and emotional benefits. People can start piano lessons at 60, at 70, at 80, even later. Your brain can still form new connections at any age. You can always learn new skills. For those who start later in life, learning the piano may take a little more patience. But you should always follow your dreams no matter what age you are!
