What is a College?

A College is an educational institution that offers further education courses.

In the UK secondary schools offer statutory education for students from ages 11 to 16. After this students can then choose to go to sixth form or college.

Further education college courses are designed to teach students to reach a certain level of skills and knowledge in a particular field of interest, they are often practical and vocational in nature, helping them get a job or gain academic preparation to enter university.

Colleges offer a more relaxed environment in which students are encouraged to take more responsibility for their education. Students choose their own study programme and are only expected to be present during class times. Students can choose from GCSEs, Higher National Diplomas and A Levels to BTEC courses and skills diplomas.

People can also come to college at all stages of life to gain new skills or pursue hobbies, from learning to speak a new language before going on holiday to cake decorating.

What is the difference between Sixth Form and College?

Sixth forms and colleges are different because of the types of courses they offer.

Many sixth forms are attached to secondary schools and have both A Level and BTEC qualifications and in some cases, International Baccalaureates (IB).

Sixth form colleges are separate to secondary schools but are very similar. They offer A Level and BTEC qualifications, as well as access courses, diplomas and more.

The benefits of a sixth form college is that they tend to be more informal and comfortable environments in comparison to school sixth form centres. It’s highly unlikely that you will be made to wear a uniform at a sixth form college, whereas if you stay at school you’ll probably have to wear a similar (if not the same) uniform to the one you have worn since Year 7!

As explained, colleges usually offer what's called vocational courses. These courses are very hands-on and practical, like cooking or uniform services, and will sometimes be in the form of apprenticeships.

What are College Counselling lessons?

Moving onto further education is a big step. Many are not sure what path to take and what will be most interesting for them. It is good practice to talk to a professional who can consult you on the options available.

College counselling lessons are usually provided by educational experts and professional consultants and will help you decide on the next step in your education.

As always, talk to family, friends, school staff and your careers adviser and make sure you have all the information you need before making any decisions.

Also, use your interview at college well; ask questions about pass rates, drop-out rates and try to speak to current students – they will certainly tell you what it’s really like!

Try to have a tour of the college to see the facilities in the teaching areas, library, common room and eating areas.
