About Child Psychology

Child psychology is one of the many branches of psychology. This particular branch focuses on the subconscious and conscious childhood development. It studies the mind and behaviour of children from their first years all the way through adolescence. Because it’s so vast it’s often separated into different areas that are studied separately. Psychologists who specialise primarily in working with children conduct research, administer tests and tend to engage in therapy sessions with the children themselves individually as well as with their parents. 

Child psychologists are specifically trained because mental and behavioural disorders that affect children are often treated differently than adults. Usually child psychologists work with minors in one-on-one meetings in order to get to know them better and build trust. Often a child’s parents or other important figures in their lives will also take part in these meetings so they can be involved in the treatment process. 

Child psychologists can be found in schools, hospitals, private practises and some government agencies. Depending on where they work, their daily tasks will differ.

Those working in academic, government and private institutions deal more with research, while those in schools focus on how behavioural and mental disorders affect learning. They are often responsible for helping students out and providing counselling for teachers and parents if necessary.
