My name is Guy and am an Ilkeston based tutor covering the immediate and surrounding areas with bespoke in person tuition and more recently UK wide with effective online options also. With a wealth of classroom and tutoring experience, I love working one to one with students in helping them develop their skills and confidence in maths and science from KS3 all the way up to GCSE and A Level.
Originally a physics graduate over the last few years I find myself teaching more and more maths as a stand alone subject. I specialise in confidence building, getting to know my students in helping them meet the challenges of the reformed GCSE 9-1 in maths and physics.
Session are tailored to each student individually. You are assured of personal attention and patience. I will always find a strategy to help overcome any barriers in my students achieving their full potential. I've been offering private tuition for the last 11 years and can offer a wide selection of references from successful students I've worked with. From the first run of the new maths GCSE 9-1 in 2017 through to the present, I have enjoyed a 100% success rate in my students achieving a grade 4 or above with exceptional performances at grade 7 and 8, despite the challenges of the pandemic!
I also working with A Level students in maths and physics, supporting them with the demands of the new post 16 specification.
In person tuition is offered in student's homes within a an approx 5 mile radius of DE7 but having also transitioned online can offer a nationwide service which has demonstrated to be equally as effective.

I specialise in working with students on a 1-on-1 basis, easing and tackling individual areas of difficulty at their appropriate pace – something that can be difficult to receive in the standard school environment. My teaching approach is adaptive upon students’ own learning attitude, thus, presenting resources in various ways. It is focused on fostering a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of a topic, before applying that knowledge to solving questionnaires. I also specially aid with exam preparation to share my own unique methods of working and exam techniques/tips. Ultimately, I aim to develop one’s self-esteem and perseverance to fulfil their own aspirations.
I have taught a wide age group from 5 to 24, which my past tutor sessions were based on creativity of my hobbies such as art, which always worked absolutely well since when I was a GCSE student.
I have many experiences working with children, especially with spending my work experience as an assistant in a primary school class, I was able to interact and deal with various situations to keep the children calm, focused and motivated. As a school tutor, I utilised my organisational skills to collect resources and investigated various methods of teaching to find the most efficient way to deliver difficult contents, suiting the students’ own learning attitude appropriately. I evolved my communication competency whilst discovering the students’ difficulty and preferred revision methods, also.
I am someone who has academically succeeded highly through UK national curriculum. I have passion towards mathematics thus, I have participated and have been awarded many times for UKMT, and moreover, for Chemistry and Physics Olympiad challenges as Gold and Bronze respectively. I held responsibility as a School Ambassador and School tutoring, volunteered to be a Reader Leader who helps those who struggle reading and understanding the story with success. I aid in writing model answers for GCSE & A-Level exam questions as well. Not only am I self-disciplined and persevered but I enjoy hobbies that are based on creativity: DIY craft and art, piano, dancing, sport, ballet, balancing my work and leisure. I am also fluent in English and relatively fluent in Korean with a basic level of French language. My experiences in life, living in various different countries allowed me to interact and adapt into many different societies, overcoming many barriers. The team at Launch is composed of experienced teachers and senior leaders, who lead phases, subjects and assessment areas in their primary schools. Our mission remains simple: to confidently address learning differences in each student and allow them to excel in a uniquely personalised learning environment. We do not offer generic lessons; our sessions are designed around the students that we teach and their respective starting points.
As parents of primary-aged pupils, we are aware of how Covid-19 has affected our young people. Through small-group sessions, we seek to bridge the gap in learning that it has left behind and help our pupils to achieve whatever their educational goals might be.
How we start
Firstly, it is important that we get to know each child as an individual. We offer free of charge assessments of your child's reading fluency, reading comprehension and mathematics prior to starting. This allows us to plan for progression in each and every session that the child attends, right from day one.
English
We begin with our youngest learners by working on each child's understanding and application of phonics. We develop this so that pupils can read fluently with the right emphasis and expression and use their working memory on comprehending the text rather than trying to decode each individual word.
Within our English sessions for Year 3 and 4 children, we work to develop the many strands that weave together to make a skilled reader. We develop each child's sight recognition, decoding and phonological awareness to optimise their reading fluency. We also focus on advancing background knowledge, language and literacy awareness and verbal reasoning to improve comprehension. This is all done within fun group sessions that will foster a love of reading.
As we move into Year 5, some pupils may choose to focus these skills towards the GL 11+ test used in all Birmingham grammar schools (from this year) whilst continuing to enjoy our learning and expand our knowledge of the world. Others drive on towards their SATS in bespoke workshops.
Mathematics
Within each maths lesson, we aim to give the children the opportunity to learn and practise new skills, embed this new learning through application to different contexts and then reason and problem solve. We use practical and pictorial models to ensure that learning is embedded and retained before we move on to a new topic.
In year 5, pupils who will sit the 11+ entrance exams will add the focus of non-verbal reasoning to their maths sessions as we focus the children on content that they will meet in the GL 11+ papers.
