Hello and welcome to my TutorExtra profile. I'm Emma, an experienced Primary School teacher with a specialism in Early Years. I am described as caring, nurturing and welcoming teacher and individual.
I have taught in mainstream primary schools for nearly 10 years and prior to this, I was a Nursery Nurse for a near by council, working for SureStart with children aged birth to five. Within in the Primary School sector, I have worked with all Key Stages but my preference and comfort zone lies within EYFS and KS1. I am an Early Years Lead teacher, which means I'm responsible for the Early Years department within my school and I also lead the phonics and early reading curriculum throughout school too. I am a believer in hands-on learning; using resources wherever possible to support the children's understanding, to deepen concepts and most of all have fun is something I'm passionate about.

I am a newly qualified primary school teacher who specialises in music and the arts. I am extremely passionate about helping children achieve their goals and will provide high quality lessons to ensure they have the best start.
I have been teaching for the past 18 years. I have worked in primary schools across County Durham and have considerable experience in teaching across all the primary phases. I have lots of experience teaching pupils with autism, adhd, dyslexia, dyscalculia and emotional and behavioural problems. My approach is that learning should be fun, creative but also providing the essential skills all children need to make good progress. I am adept at planning sessions that cover the national curriculum requirements , but at the same time making sure I meet the child where they are in their journey of learning. I have a caring, nurturing approach but set high standards of achievement with all my pupils.

Firstly, I have over 25 years experience of teaching Mathematics to the 11-16 age range in Secondary schools. I am a dedicated, hardworking and enthusiastic individual who has experience across the entire primary age range from Year 1 up to Year 6. During my time at my current school, I have been able to work independently and as part of a team to create a balanced and broad curriculum that matches the needs of the children in my class. I have been able to capture the interest and attention of the children through a wide variety of texts that have been carefully selected to ensure there is a range of themes and conventions covered including “family and friendships”, “Social and Racial issues” “key historical events such as the Anglo-Saxons and the www.*** ; Throughout our reading journey in Year 4, the children have shown their interest in each text through the emotion in their voices when answering questions and making predictions, the work they have produced and how they ask me as their class teacher to keep reading and not close the book.
Furthermore, I have been able to teach effective units of writing that have been carefully sequenced and planned to ensure that the children have all of the skills they need to write an effective end of unit independent piece of writing. Throughout each unit, I am also able to adapt the sequence of lessons as the unit progresses to ensure that the children are fully confident in the grammar, structure and organisational features of the text before they write independently. To ensure that there is a wide coverage across the curriculum the children are exposed to a wide variety of writing types including: descriptions, poetry, story writing, letters and instructions. Each of these pieces of writing have started with a hook to capture the interest and curiosity of each child in the class.
I have also been able to plan alongside schemes that are in school and been able to plan a Maths curriculum independently for different year groups. At my current school, I have been able to work alongside the Power Maths and White Rose scheme. Through these schemes I have also been able to use my teacher's judgement and assessment for learning techniques to adapt and add to the schemes to ensure that each child is fully “fluent” in any given topic before moving onto problem solving and reasoning questions. I have also been able to quickly build up professional relationships with both staff and parents. I strive to ensure that I work as an effective team member and continue to contribute exciting and fresh ideas to create a broad and engaging curriculum for all.
Previous to this I have worked in a number of different schools with a variety of backgrounds during my time on supply. An example of this would be teaching on a long term placement through supply placement. I was teaching in a mixed Y4/5 class at a school in Middlesbrough. The class was 100% EAL with a high proportion of SEN needs. Although it was a Y4/5 class, they were only working at aY1/2 level. Through the placement I have been able to demonstrate effective behaviour management strategies due to the fact that it was impossible to stick to one strategy. This required me to constantly adapt my strategies to the needs of the class on a regular basis. Furthermore, through quality first teaching, exciting and engaging lessons and an excellent understanding of each of the children’s needs I was able to make accelerated progress and work towards closing the gap from their KS1 trajectory to where they should be in terms of age related expectations. During my time at the school I was also able to work with a variety of external agencies in order to aid the provision of the children and ensure that each of their needs was being met.

I encourage and motivate pupils to take a responsible and conscientious attitude to study by making it relevant to real-life situations. I can offer a personalised learning programme for every individual pupil bridging the gap in learning. I have gained an understanding of Rosenshine’s principles of Instruction and cognitive load theory. They outline how to scaffold learning by breaking the new information into chunks, then providing worked examples and guided practice to enable learners to follow new concepts without experiencing cognitive overload. I use scaffolding techniques such as using partially completed examples to focus the pupil’s attention on the specific steps. Creating a positive environment where making mistakes and learning from them and how to persevere are part of the daily routine.
I believe in regular and purposeful retrieval practice of what has previously been taught to help consolidate the material and let pupils remember what they have learned. I aim to build spaced practise as an integral part of my teaching style, to ensure pupils have repeated opportunities to practise, with my appropriate guidance and support. I explicitly teach metacognitive strategies to learners on how to plan, monitor and evaluate their performance to support independence and academic success.
