A little about me in the school setting
My roles have allowed me to build on a range of areas that I have been interested in for some time. My focus on ‘pedagogy’ has been developed towards ‘praxis’ – the idea that one reflects and acts uponp ractice to transform it. What I have learnt is that a narrow focus on the classroom isn’t enough. Instead,an effective system is one which develops productive and synergistic relationships between learners,families, and the community, and that a deep understanding of the context in which you work, the locality and the culture in which learners live is crucial. I believe we have started on exciting journey here proceeding and developing positively on recent Ofsted feedback – building on those to ensure that learning really is a community endeavour in the best possible sense. My ‘curriculum’ will not stop at the door of a classroom, or the school gate but will be a transforming powerhouse for all living in the community. This, in practical terms could be parenting support in the form of coaching and peer support; providing evening classes in basic skills, parental revision classes to help them best assist their child. It could be using the school buildings as a base of local CPD provision, for meetings, for collaboration among local departments.

Mathematics, English, and Science have always been among my strongest and most enjoyable subjects. With a First Class degree in Biomedical Science and a deep interest in education, I bring both academic knowledge and a passion for teaching to my tutoring. I am a GCSE student currently taking my examinations with predictions of all 8/9s. After lots of hardwork and determination, I have been able to achieve highly in all GCSE subjects on offer and I believe that as a young teacher, students will feel more comfortable learning with likeminded people. Although it may seem easy, GCSE's and studying is hard! I for one found subjects like Maths and Science very difficult and spent hours practicing and perfecting the subjects. Now, I teach my friends and family all of the subjects I have learnt for GCSE and I know all of the tips and tricks for revision and effective studying. I am about to take my Music GCSE exam with a predicted result of grade 8/9. I achieved 100% in my performance and composition and feel teaching is the right next step. I have a distinction in Grade 8 acoustic guitar and have achieved my Grade 5 music theory. I enjoy playing electric/acoustic guitar and singing as well as improvising on guitar! I have performed in countless venues solo, within a Rock band, in choirs, in orchestras and in musical theatre shows. Although I started learning with an acoustic guitar at the age of 7, I have now got two electric guitars, a keyboard, microphones and a ukulele! On the first lesson, I will work out a plan personalised to the student and their aims and goals. For all guitar students, we will cover fun songs to play on guitar with strummed chords and different plucking techniques including any songs the student would prefer to learn! Within one lesson, we will also go over basic scales needed for theory and improvisation and we will work from the RGT grade music books or the Rock School music books learning the songs needed for acoustic classical guitar/ acoustic guitar performance grades. The student will be able to learn how to play the guitar songs needed for grades even if they don't wish to take them or, they can have the option just to learn any songs they would like for a fun experience. The student will also learn the parts of the guitar and begin to learn all the notes of the fretboard for sight reading. Additionally, I will ensure the student is able to read chords and tabs for guitar as well as basic notation that can be helpful for theory and other instruments. The student will have the ability to play a wide variety of techniques including Hammer-on, bends, slides, finger-picking and palm muting. I will also teach the student about different ways of playing guitar and different effects that can be created using Amps and tuning.
I will also cover how to write chords on paper- key skills for songwriting- as well as tips on performing that could be useful for any musician no matter the instrument. As I have skills in writing my own music as well as producing my own music, I will be able to encourage students to explore different genres of music and different styles of playing. Within the lesson, we will cover everything stated above to ensure the student has a well rounded musical knowledge. I will always ask that the students go away and practice at home but this will never be forced- the student will only practice if they enjoy playing! If the student grows to love the instrument, they will crave the music and they will want to start playing alone at home without being pressured.

Each lesson begins with a run-through of the topic and explanation of key concepts with opportunities for pupils to ask questions. Students are then provided with high yield exam questions and worksheets to complete. Questions are then marked together to highlight areas of strength and areas of improvement. An emphasis is always maintained on exam technique during each lesson. Assessments to determine student improvement are provided every 4-6 weeks.
All students are taught how to study effectively using two evidence-based study techniques:
1) Active Recall - Here students create useful revision questions to test their memory of certain topics
2) Spaced Repetition - Here students are taught how to strategically review topics regularly and boost their chances of remembering important exam content throughout the year and leading up to exams.
My classes are always tailored with a personalised programme for each and every student and remain friendly and engaging. All resources including specialised notes for each exam board, revision questions and exam question related to the tutees exam board are provided free of charge. I am a professional violinist, violist and conductor, studying for a PhD in Music at the University of Cambridge. As a Supervisor in the Faculty of Music, I teach undergraduate music students at Cambridge. I also teach conducting, violin, viola, and chamber music at the Saffron Walden Centre for Young Musicians in Essex. With over nine years of tutoring experience, I also offer private tuition in violin, viola, orchestral conducting, music, music theory, philosophy, history, essay and dissertation skills, english literature, classical civilisation and violin performance.

– I favour a structured approach to teaching. I devise lesson plans in advance of every lesson, catered to the student's specific needs. I also inform the design of my classes through a constructive dialogue with my students. This enables me to structure my lessons within a curriculum that meets my students' specific educational needs, and serves to enable my students to achieve tangible improvements in their academic performance and musical ability.
Academic Tuition
– My academic lessons tend to be structured around specific sections of the syllabus, or particular topics that students require help with.
– I employ a seminar style format, in which I flesh out ideas with the aid of quotations, other audio-visual resources, and analytical commentary which my students can use to develop essays, essay plans, revision tools, and exam revision packs.
– I use Powerpoint to provide students with a variety of resources and visual stimuli.
– I structure my lesson plans with a view to providing short points of rest or temporary closure, in which students are able to ask questions about the content. I am also happy for students to interrupt the flow of the lesson if a burning question arises.

– Violin lessons tend to be carefully planned to focus on specific technical aspects of performance. Every student/learner is different; every backstory is unique. Many students have barriers; sometimes reassurance and pointing in the right direction will suffice.
Some years ago, I tutored a student on a Saturday morning. He was a bright and a very able science/maths learner (straight As at GCSE) yet could not handle English or Literature and this was clearly holding him back (both his own self-esteem and his grades). It took a few weeks to instill a new way of apporaching the texts/writing, but once we applied a 'scientific approach' to analysis, it completely revolutinised his way of working. (He moved from a D to an A in four months of being with me, by the way!)
That was not a one-off. My recent tutoring has enabled me to accelerate learners way beyond what they thought they were capable of. Tutees are at the centre of the experince and it is all focused on them. I have an excellent interpersonal style, which is firm and fair, with a strong sense of agenda and coverage. We will go over things, revisiting to reinforce previous learning and to create the space where the tutee feels more independent and able to move forward without support. When a tutee says "I think I'm good from here!" I take that as a moment of great success!
