I specialise in Online English tuition, covering all texts in the GCSE and KS3, along with essay writing practice and exam revision. My services also include online adult functional skills tuition. My mission is to help students become more confident in their English skills and to provide them with the tools and strategies for success.
A little about me in the school setting
My roles have allowed me to build on a range of areas that I have been interested in for some time. My focus on ‘pedagogy’ has been developed towards ‘praxis’ – the idea that one reflects and acts uponp ractice to transform it. What I have learnt is that a narrow focus on the classroom isn’t enough. Instead,an effective system is one which develops productive and synergistic relationships between learners,families, and the community, and that a deep understanding of the context in which you work, the locality and the culture in which learners live is crucial. I believe we have started on exciting journey here proceeding and developing positively on recent Ofsted feedback – building on those to ensure that learning really is a community endeavour in the best possible sense. My ‘curriculum’ will not stop at the door of a classroom, or the school gate but will be a transforming powerhouse for all living in the community. This, in practical terms could be parenting support in the form of coaching and peer support; providing evening classes in basic skills, parental revision classes to help them best assist their child. It could be using the school buildings as a base of local CPD provision, for meetings, for collaboration among local departments.

I am a first year student studying BSc Psychology at Durham University. At A-levels, I studied English Literature (A*), Psychology (A) and Biology (A) and completed an EPQ (A*); and at GCSEs I achieved 11 grades 7-9, including: 9s in English Literature and Latin, 8s in Maths, English Language, French, Biology, Physics, Geography and Ancient Greek, and 7s in Music and Chemistry. I have experience being as a GCSE English Literature and Language tutor and a revision mentor, as well as being a volunteer primary school classroom assistant for a year. Additionally, I hold a TEFL level 2 qualification, a Coaching and Mentoring [CPD certified] qualification and a Child Protection for Tutors certificate [CPD certified].
I am offering tutoring in Edexcel (i)GCSE for English Language and Literature, as well as Edexcel A-Level English Literature and AQA Psychology A-Level.

I am passionate about helping children learn and am highly qualified to teach children up to GCSE level. I have had experience teaching children with SEND needs also so would be able to prepare a bespoke set of sessions for any individual. I ask any pupil who is looking for tutoring to to complete a short baseline test to give an accurate current picture of where they are starting from. A meeting with parents to negotiate timescale and to establish end goals is essential. Following completion of A-Levels in History, English Literature and Health and Social Care, I began my career in education through obtaining a degree in primary education, specialising in the arts and humanities. I have taught children ranging from 4-11 in addition to gaining experience in EAL, SEN and training in BR@P and Prevent. I have further experience as a nursery nurse and a childminders assistant focusing on preparing early years children for school. I am an academic and senior lecturer with more than 30 years of expereince teaching English language and academic writing. I have published more than 20 papers and book chapters. I specialise in English and examination preparation including IELTS and GCSE, as well as writing for college and university contexts. I have taught in the UK, Japan and the USA.

During my time at my current school, I have been able to work independently and as part of a team to create a balanced and broad curriculum that matches the needs of the children in my class. I have been able to capture the interest and attention of the children through a wide variety of texts that have been carefully selected to ensure there is a range of themes and conventions covered including “family and friendships”, “Social and Racial issues” “key historical events such as the Anglo-Saxons and the www.*** ; Throughout our reading journey in Year 4, the children have shown their interest in each text through the emotion in their voices when answering questions and making predictions, the work they have produced and how they ask me as their class teacher to keep reading and not close the book.
Furthermore, I have been able to teach effective units of writing that have been carefully sequenced and planned to ensure that the children have all of the skills they need to write an effective end of unit independent piece of writing. Throughout each unit, I am also able to adapt the sequence of lessons as the unit progresses to ensure that the children are fully confident in the grammar, structure and organisational features of the text before they write independently. To ensure that there is a wide coverage across the curriculum the children are exposed to a wide variety of writing types including: descriptions, poetry, story writing, letters and instructions. Each of these pieces of writing have started with a hook to capture the interest and curiosity of each child in the class.
I have also been able to plan alongside schemes that are in school and been able to plan a Maths curriculum independently for different year groups. At my current school, I have been able to work alongside the Power Maths and White Rose scheme. Through these schemes I have also been able to use my teacher's judgement and assessment for learning techniques to adapt and add to the schemes to ensure that each child is fully “fluent” in any given topic before moving onto problem solving and reasoning questions. Here it is important that the children have the necessary mathematical skills to challenge these problems but also have the ability to break problem questions down especially those that are “two steps and three www.*** ;
I have also been able to quickly build up professional relationships with both staff and parents. I strive to ensure that I work as an effective team member and continue to contribute exciting and fresh ideas to create a broad and engaging curriculum for all.
Previous to this I have worked in a number of different schools with a variety of backgrounds during my time on supply. An example of this would be teaching on a long term placement through supply placement. I was teaching in a mixed Y4/5 class at a school in Middlesbrough. The class was 100% EAL with a high proportion of SEN needs. Although it was a Y4/5 class, they were only working at aY1/2 level. Through the placement I have been able to demonstrate effective behaviour management strategies due to the fact that it was impossible to stick to one strategy. This required me to constantly adapt my strategies to the needs of the class on a regular basis. Furthermore, through quality first teaching, exciting and engaging lessons and an excellent understanding of each of the children’s needs I was able to make accelerated progress and work towards closing the gap from their KS1 trajectory to where they should be in terms of age related expectations. During my time at the school I was also able to work with a variety of external agencies in order to aid the provision of the children and ensure that each of their needs was being met.
