Qualified Oxford graduate - degree in education and English.
Over 20 years experience as a teacher of English, leader of English departments and Literacy co-ordinator.
I started my career teaching children with special needs and specialised in those with emotional, social and behavioural difficulties. This was my specialsilst graduate study subject and led to my first management and leadership responsibilities.
My first job was teaching a class of 11-12 year olds who had not managed to achieve a national curriculum level in English and maths in year 6. By the end of year 7, they all achieved at least a level 3, with most acheiving a level 4 or 5. My value added was the highest in the school.
I learned through experience the power of small group work rather than simply 1-1, but led by inspirational leadership: builidng trust, self-confidence and the layering of skills to support their individual learning which is why I encourage group tutoring as the most powerful way to learn outside of regular class learning.
I have been a teacher for the last 7 years working across Reception, KS1 and KS2 and in special needs. I have experience working with people on the autism spectrum up to KS4. I have tutored privately for over a year, including providing education to children who are out of school and working in alternative provision. I cover math from ages 4 - 16 working up to the foundation tier of GCSE papers. I teach English to children aged 4 - 12 (Year 7). I can offer support with help for the KS1 phonics screenings, KS1 and KS2 SAT's papers and the Year 4 government multiplication tables check.

I am an experienced, qualified teacher and tutor of 20+ years. I am educated to master's level and have expereince teaching and tutoring primary and preparatory school pupils (ages 6 - 13). I can provide home learning support in all primary subjects as well as specialist English tuition. I have had success preparing pupils for SATs and entrance examinations for independent schools, particularly in Cambridge, (United Kingdom), though I am also familiar with Cheltenham schools. I tailor sessions to the individual child's interests and needs, and work with pupils and parents to meet their desired goals, whether these be to build confidence, to develop creativty or to begin entrance exam preparation in earnest. I usually set a short piece of homework at the end of each session and review this with the pupil in the following session.
I am currently working only online via Skype and Zoom to deliver lessons but will also consider other mutually agreeable, secure platforms.
My basic rate is £30 per hour but this may be adjusted up to £35 or down to £25 depending upon the age and number of students, the work involved and any fees charged to me to facilitate tutoring.
Return to School or Transition Support - I can provide educational support for children returning to school in September after a significant time out of a formal educational environment. I can also support those children making important transitions between key stages or who are adjusting to the pace of work in a new school.
Manuscripts and dissertations (master's level) - I offer a proof-reading (typing, spelling and punctuation) and basic editing (grammar, consistency and clarity) service and quote for this on an individual basis.

About the Lesson
I offer one, one and a half, and two-hour lessons, using questioning techniques to encourage deeper thinking and help students achieve top grades in English. My experience includes teaching a wide range of texts such as Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, The Sign of the Four, A Christmas Carol, An Inspector Calls, and poetry from the Power and Conflict and Love and Relationships anthologies. I have also served as an examiner, marking AQA English Literature Paper 2, and will be marking Language Paper 1 this year.

I have worked as a moderator, question setter and examiner for 3 different Boards over the past 20 years. I am up to date with the new specifications for English Language, English Literature, and English Language and Literature. I have taught all these recently at my sixth form college, MPW Cambridge, where I teach one to one.
