Qualified Oxford graduate - degree in education and English. Over 20 years experience as a teacher of English, leader of English departments and Literacy co-ordinator. I started my career teaching children with special needs and specialised in those with emotional, social and behavioural difficulties. This was my specialsilst graduate study subject and led to my first management and leadership responsibilities. My first job was teaching a class of 11-12 year olds who had not managed to achieve a national curriculum level in English and maths in year 6. By the end of year 7, they all achieved at least a level 3, with most acheiving a level 4 or 5. My value added was the highest in the school. I learned through experience the power of small group work rather than simply 1-1, but led by inspirational leadership: builidng trust, self-confidence and the layering of skills to support their individual learning which is why I encourage group tutoring as the most powerful way to learn outside of regular class learning. |
