Hello, my name is James, a Montessori qualified educator, offering rich, creative, imaginative lessons drawing on years of experience as a teacher and consultant in order to bring the curriculum to life, each lesson tailored to the specific needs and interests of the child.
After co-founding my own Montessori childcare setting in Bristol, which I ran as the lead teacher for 3 and a half years, (2017 - 2020) I went on to offer webinars for parents and educators as a consultant with Montessori Centre International (2020-2021), the training college I completed my diploma with. I have continued working as an independent consultant in the period since, with specific focus on embedding the UN's Sustainable Development Goals into the curriculum in new and exciting ways, primariily for children aged 7+ through project based learning.
Drawing on Montessori Pedagogy and Philosophy I know through my own lived experience the entire curriculum can be successfully taught to the child by observing their interests and creating lessons that directly inspire their heart and imagination, increasing curiosiry and engagement in the classroom. I taught Years 7 and 8 and focused heavily on lower-ability and SEN students. By working with children who have special educational needs, I was quickly able to learn how to cater to the students varying educational needs. I made sure that inclusion and equality were given the top priority within the learning environment. This was important due to the fact that the students I worked with had differing and often multiple needs. My classroom often included deaf and mute students, students who have social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties (SEBD), and those who speak English as an additional language (EAL). While teaching these students I made sure to plan and manage my lessons carefully, according to the needs of my class. I liaised with relevant support staff (Deaf support and SEN specialists) and made sure all the students were catered to.
Furthermore, I also have experience teaching year 9, 10, 11, and A-Level students. This gave me the opportunity to use pedagogical techniques that challenged higher-ability students. For example, I have been encouraging students to create their own success criteria so that they are thinking about how to achieve their own goals in the lesson and also reflect on how they can improve. I have also utilized a variety of assessment techniques in the classroom to gauge student understanding and use both formative and summative assessments to further check and improve their learning. I believe that assessment for learning and keeping track of pupil progression is crucial. Therefore, I regularly mark students’ class books and look at their assessments to ensure that I can plan feedback lessons to help my students improve.
With my two-year experience as a Maths tutor, I guided students through various stages of the national mathematics curriculum, working up to A-level standard, Planned and developed appropriate teaching materials that were tailored to each client. I have over 15 years experience in Teaching, and over 12 years experience in Private Tutoring. I currently offer both face-to-face in person tutoring for 1:1 or small groups. I am patient, kind, and incredibly encouraging but have high expectations. I work with students for them to also gain high expectations in themselves. This may happen in the first few sessions or may take a longer period of time depending on the student.
I help students gain high expectations for themselves by initially giving tasks where they are guaranteed success, then celebrating and reflecting on this success and how they were able to use the skills taught and their effort to complete the task. This builds a persons confidence and significantly increases the likelihood of attempting more difficult tasks. This is heavily proven by research (and seen in my classroom daily) known as the “theory of self efficacy” and the “theory of planned behaviour”.
If a person does not believe a task is within their capability, they are incredibly unlikely to even attempt it (No matter how much we believe they can do it).
It is my job to SHOW students they can do it by designing tasks and lessons in a way that they feel challenged finish with pride in their achievements.
When teaching new skills I will show them first, then we will complete a task together, then they will apply the skills independently. I will be constantly assessing as they work independently and provide support where necessary. The ultimate goal is to phase back my support until they are using the taught skills correctly, consistently, confidently and independently.
Lessons will vary depending on students needs. If caregivers want to spend a percentage of the lesson to discuss, that will be agreed upon. If there are specific targets you want me to cover then we can dedicate time for you to tell me these expectations. If you would prefer me to assess your student and gage where the gaps are and plan accordingly, that is also ok.

Reading and writing is an essential skills in secondary school for every subject. I can support your child to close the gap so they can access all subjects with their peers. Having worked in secondary schools before, I have seen how much students are required to read and write in all lessons, but there will not be opportunities to learn these fundamental skills at school.

NHS Doctor with over 10 years of experience studying and completing exams and over 7 years teaching Maths, Biology and Chemistry for KS3, GCSE and A Level. My tuition approach is listed below.
Each lesson begins with a run-through of the topic and explanation of key concepts with opportunities for pupils to ask questions. Students are then provided with high yield exam questions and worksheets to complete. Questions are then marked together to highlight areas of strength and areas of improvement. An emphasis is always maintained on exam technique during each lesson. Assessments to determine student improvement are provided every 4-6 weeks.
All students are taught how to study effectively using two evidence-based study techniques:
1) Active Recall - Here students create useful revision questions to test their memory of certain topics
2) Spaced Repetition - Here students are taught how to strategically review topics regularly and boost their chances of remembering important exam content throughout the year and leading up to exams.
My classes are always tailored with a personalised programme for each and every student and remain friendly and engaging. All resources including specialised notes for each exam board, revision questions and exam question related to the tutees exam board are provided free of charge. Tuition goes beyond the `hour slot` as students are able to contact me via phone, email and tutor hunt messaging. I also remain engaged with the lesson and do not `clock-watch`.
