What is the history of Cookery?

Cooking is the act we do in order to prepare food. There are several types of cooking like baking, pastry etc. Since ancient times we have evidence that people started cooking. These people usually cooked meat and bread on handmade fires.

Cookery history focuses on several different avenues, but perhaps the first and most important of these is cookbooks. Since the dawn of writing, people have been writing down recipes - the Sumerians, for example, recorded recipes, including for beer, on clay tablets. Similarly, many recipes are found in Egyptian hieroglyphics. The ancient Greeks seem to have been the first to compile cookbooks. Although many manuscripts on the subject were compiled in antiquity, only one is known to have survived.

The Arabs were great admirers of the culinary arts and the first known non-Roman cookery manuscripts were compiled in the 9th century in Baghdad. The Crusades rekindled interest in the culinary arts in Western Europe, largely because of the influx of exotic spices from the East. Dozens of cookery manuscripts were subsequently written - in England, Germany, Italy and Spain. The similarities between these manuscripts suggest that chefs and the royal families they worked for were closely connected.
