I am a highly experienced teacher, performer, composer and arranger, living and working in beautiful East Devon. I love and play music of all kinds. Clarinet, Saxophone and Flute are my favourites, as nothing feels closer to the human voice.
After a first class BA in music and a PGCE that specialised in instrumental teaching, I have taught continuously in Devon schools and privately at home for over thirty years.
I offer relaxed lessons to all ages, primary to adult. I believe in an individual approach, following your interests, providing materials to suit, and sharing your love of music. As a performer, I have experience of classical, jazz, folk, pop, soul and rock, and I teach improvisation and ear skills alongside reading. I am fully familiar with the music curriculum and often support it in my lessons. I also offer a full external exam service where appropriate, using the Trinity College syllabus.

I have 18-year of experience teaching saxophone, clarinet, theory and composition; moreover, I am also a teacher of the IB curriculum. In addition, I am a professional musician, composer and event organiser with a music PhD and diploma in saxophone.
As an artistic director, I have organised many successful concerts and events to promote contemporary music and received awards from Hong Kong and Ireland. As an educator, I was selected by Quality Education Fund Hong Kong to teach composition in 2014 and was appointed to conduct the wind band at Lutheran Academy. Nevertheless, in 2015 I was nominated to conduct the Open University Hong Kong orchestra and employed by The Chinese University of Hong Kong School of Continuing and Professional Studies as a part-time saxophone lecturer. Finally, as a composer, my musical works have been awarded three times from Sound Imagination and selected in Up-close with music Ireland and ICF winter music festival 2015.
My students have also received different prizes in competitions, such as the Golden key composition competition and Hong Kong Music Festival in Saxophone. Furthermore, as a musician with a global view, I can speak fluent English, Mandarin and Cantonese; therefore, l can fulfil the need of students with different languages.
Education is different from teaching or providing instruction; education is about stimulating curiosity; therefore, asking questions is essential.
On composition teaching: I believe that using a story to start with can help us establish the structure and develop the compositions. However, innovative ideas provide the fundamental source of our works. In addition to the ideas, basic training is essential, such as analysis, which helps us understand composing. To me, education is about a journey of asking questions and finding explanations.
On musical instrument teaching: To learn how to learn is the way of my education, and I believe this is an essential skill to develop techniques. Teaching students to notice what mistake they may commit or what kind of wrong postures they make during their practice is crucial. Because the longer they practice, the bigger the error will become. That is why, as a music educator, we should avoid this from happening.

I'm a professional Music lecturer and tutor, Guitar teacher and Bass tutor based in the West Midlands. As a Music tutor/instrumental tutor I have 1000+ hours of teaching experience, I hold a Popular Music Degree and in a College employment setting I have 14+ years experience of teaching college students from ages 16+ to adults in a range of levels (1-5).
I know every student’s journey is different, and my aim is to meet each student where they’re at, learning through Music we discuss their aims and develop the curriculum to develop their understanding.
As a musician I play in a variety of bands and performance situations as well as session work for bands and for artists up and down the UK.
I’m a Bass player for a Midlands based punk band who have released three albums and with this I have played festivals around the UK.
I play Guitar for a folk/rock band, a high end function band and also for a Queen tribute band.
As a teacher I work closely with pupils to develop personal goals, and work together on a simple plan on how to reach them. I believe understanding the reason the student is taking lessons and playing guitar/bass or embarking on other musical developments is fundamental to providing quality tuition, so I strive to create plans with the pupil to support their aims. Each lesson always keeps the pupil’s individual goals at its centre, and is created to develop musical fluency.
Ultimately I teach the student to teach themselves by understanding core musical concepts and developing a base of fundamental skills, these include; Ear Training - learning how to recognise the chords in any given song by ear; Strumming and Picking/Fingerpicking Technique - fluency with all standard right hand techniques is a must, and I teach these prioritising what is commonly used in their favourite styles; Reading TAB as well as Staff notation.
Creative Playing, Song Writing, and Improvising is my favourite area of playing and teaching as it helps learners find their own voice! I help to build knowledge of music theory in a practical and applicable way, exploring new concepts that will enable students to discover new sounds.
Again, this is catered to their aims - if they wish to write songs we'll look at some of their favourite artists/genres, see what they're doing, and set some aims for targets to write using some of their techniques.
If learners want to improvise, we'll explore some of our favourite improvisers - what scales to they use, how do they shape their phrases, and what articulation techniques are employed.
If learners have experience playing but need to improve techniques I can show drills and exercises that will make them a better player.
We explore a lot of aspects - from how to move economically; where to have tension and where to avoid it; tonal possibilities as well as how to structure your practice so you get the most for your time, whether you have a little or a lot.

I have taught guitar in Sussex for 25 years, both privately and in schools, colleges and university. I help students with auditions, performances, music exams and just getting better at playing. Offering lessons in person or online, I have been performing professionally for 38 years and teaching for 26 years. I was initially taught piano by my grandfather, the renowned concert pianist and head of piano at RSAMD, Jack Wight www.*** I then completed my studies under Ms Anna Rastopchina. I currently play in an 8-piece function band as well as a jazz ensemble. I am also the musical director for shows held in the Clyde Auditorium and the Dumbarton theatre every spring. I teach piano & keyboard to all ages and stages. Roughly half my students study for the ABRSM piano grades, and so far my pupils (over 200 candidates) have a 100% pass rate. My other students play for enjoyment, learning various styles and technique. I also prepare students for the school curriculum Nat 4/5, Higher Music and Advanced Higher Music. I teach classical piano, jazz, pop, blues, music theory and composition. I tailor all lessons to the individual needs and aspirations of the student, employing various teaching styles. I also teach some pupils to play by ear, as well as improvisational skills, if requested. I prefer to teach from my own house, where I have a beautiful Yamaha U3 piano, as well as a Nord digital 88 piano, Roland Juno DS keybpoard/synthesizer, vintage Hammond organ and Leslie speaker and recording equipment. Mario R. started his musical journey at the age of 9 and was inspired by his father and a friend from school to take up the piano. He took private lessons in Piano, Music Theory and Harmony for 6 years and continued his studies in several music schools such as Professional Musician Institute, Lino Liviabella, Bettino Padovano across Italy. Throughout his musical career, Mario’s most influential teachers have been Massimo Morganti, Giuseppe Continenza, Gary Willis, Gabriele Pesaresi, Phil Peskett, Simon Purcell, Steve Watts, Andrea Solarino, Paul Westwood and more.
Mario attended Arcevia Jazz Feast Summer Camp from 2008 to 2013 which led to masterclasses in Improvisation, Music Harmony, Composition, Arrangement, Bass Technique, Ear Training with some of the biggest artists and composers in the world music scene that included George Garzone, Bob Brookmeyer, Ayn Inserto, Scott Henderson, Gary Willis, John Stowell, Bob Mintzer, Dave Holland, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Scott Henderson and more. In 1990, Mario began studying bass guitar and playing also piano and keyboard in several bands.
Since 1997, Mario has been teaching music privately in schools while working as a professional musician in several Italian and UK bands. His musical expertise as a performer and teacher spans genres from Rock, Blues, Funk, Jazz, Latin and Electronic music.
In 2013 he moved to London where he is now based and completed his Bachelor's degree at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and specialised in Jazz Performance and Composition.
