What is Graphic Communication?

Graphic communication, as the name suggests, is communication using different graphic elements. These elements include symbols such as glyphs and icons, and images such as drawings and photographs and may consist of the passive contributions of substrate, colour and surroundings. It is the process of creating, producing, and distributing words and images to convey data, concepts, and emotions.

The graphic communications field generally includes all phases of graphic communication processes from idea inception (design, layout, and typography) to reproduction, completion, and distribution of two- or three-dimensional products or electronic transmission.

Graphic communication involves the use of visual material to connect ideas such as drawings, photographs, sketches and slides. Drawings of plans and specifications and a rough map drawn to show the way can also be considered graphic communication.

Any medium that uses a graphic to aid in conveying a message, an instruction, or an idea participates in graphic communication. One of the most widely used forms of graphic communication is drawing.

What is the history of Graphic Communication?

The earliest graphics known to anthropologists are cave paintings and markings on stones, bones, and horns that were created during the Upper Palaeolithic period of 40,000-10,000 BC or earlier. Many of these played an important role in the development of geometry. They used graphs to represent their mathematical theories, such as the circle theorem and the Pythagorean theorem.

What are Graphics?

Graphics are visual presentations on some surface such as a wall, canvas, computer screen, paper etc. that typically aim to inform, illustrate or entertain. Examples are photographs, drawings, line art, graphs, typography, numbers, symbols, maps, engineering drawings, or any other type of imagery. Graphics often combine text, illustration, and colour. Graphic design can consist of the selection, creation, or arrangement of typography alone, as in a poster, website, or book with no other element. Clarity or effective communication may be the goal, association with other cultural elements may be sought, or simply the creation of a distinctive style.

Graphics can be functional or artistic. The latter can be a recorded version, such as a photograph, or an interpretation by a scholar to highlight key features, or an artist, in which case the distinction with imaginative graphics can be blurred.

What is Communication?

Communication is the process by which information is transmitted from one person to another through any type of medium. It requires all parties to have a common communicative community. There are auditory means, such as speaking, singing,  as well as non-verbal, physical means, such as body language, sign language, paralanguage, touch and writing. Communication is defined as the process by which we assign and convey meaning in an attempt to create shared understanding. This process requires a rich repertoire of skills in intrapersonal and interpersonal processing, listening, observing, speaking, questioning, analysing and evaluating. If you use these processes, it is developmental and carries over into all areas of life: home, school, community, work and beyond. It is through communication that cooperation and collaboration occur.
