What is Vocabulary?

Vocabulary is the words that a person uses to express himself. Usually, we develop our vocabulary with age. Learning a new vocabulary when studying a new language is one of the biggest challenges.

We use vocabulary in our daily lives to communicate effectively. There are four main types of vocabulary. They are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Listening vocabulary are the words that we understand through hearing. Speaking vocabulary consists of the words we use when we speak. Other popular terms used for vocabulary are wordstock, lexis, and lexicon.

What are the different types of Vocabulary?

The types of vocabulary can be categorised based on spoken and written vocabulary.

Most often children develop their vocabulary when they are listening or speaking. Right after that comes writing and reading.

Every type of vocabulary has a different purpose and aim. The main types of vocabulary are:

  • Listening Vocabulary
These are words that we speak and understand through hearing. There are studies that a child may start recognising some words when in the womb of their mother. We learn words our whole life. The older we get our vocabulary gets better and better. Deaf people can be exposed to visual listening vocabulary for learning.

  • Speaking Vocabulary
This vocabulary consists of words that we speak with our mouth. Words we use are used for giving instructions and conversations. The number of words in this category are comparatively lesser than the listening vocabulary. Usually, children start to speak between their first and second age.

  • Reading Vocabulary
Reading is a great way for improving vocabulary. Adults always advise their children to read more so they improve their vocabulary. When you learn a new language, for example, reading is a great way to learn new vocabulary. When you read you will be able to understand some words just from the context of the book.
  • Writing Vocabulary
Words we learn while expressing ourselves through writing are termed as writing vocabulary. In order to master the writing vocabulary, we must be able to spell. When we speak we use facial expression or intonation, but when we are writing our vocabulary depends on our knowledge of vocabulary.

  • Final Vocabulary
This term was first introduced by Richard Rorty. Final Vocabulary is a collection, set, or group of words that every person applies for justifying their actions, beliefs, and lives. Final vocabulary comprises words a person avails to praise, contempt, express deep feelings, hopes, doubts, etc.
