My name is José María de Lucas Sacristán, though most know me as Chema Sacristán. I've been a professional drummer since 2004. I'd like to share a brief biography of my career in the U.K. In 2002, at 19, I realized my love for music and moved to Bristol, U.K., where I lived for four years. Bristol exposed me to all sorts of music, including rock, jazz, world music, and more. I played my first shows and worked with over five different local bands, gaining valuable experience. In 2006, I moved to London to study at Tech Music Schools, known as "Drum Tech," where I completed my higher education and earned a BMUS in Popular Music Performance (Hons), licensed by West London University. After completing my degree in 2011, I worked exclusively as a performing drummer and drum teacher, giving private lessons in my own studio, Oktopus Music Services, in North West London. In the past nine years, I've had the privilege of performing, recording, and writing with some of the best musicians in the London and U.K. scene, such as Kevin Glasgow (one of Europe's best bassists), Robin Banerjee (Amy Winehouse's guitarist), Roberto Manzin (Zucchero), Felipe Martíns (Emeterians), Juan Whist (The Voice National Spanish TV), and many others. I've showcased in most of London's live music venues and with the best U.K. and European entertainment agencies, such as Scarlett Entertainment, Full Stop Entertainment, and more. After 20 years of professional experience, I've decided to focus fully on teaching drums and performing. My studies and extensive career reflect my devotion to music, and I've mastered many techniques, including improvising, independence, coordination, and vocabulary in most music styles of modern popular music and some world music genres. (i) For School UNI students I have a deep understanding of the National Curricula from the different Boards, Aqua, Edexcel, Cambridge, and preparing students for University examinations, including UCL or Oxbridge. My experience gave me the ability to quickly spot the student's strengths and weaknesses. The result is that my students have all gained between B and A or A* or 9, at their A-level or GCSE exams, (I had just one student who was given a B, the others all gain A or A* or 9). However as importantly they are able to enjoy fluent speaking and a full understanding of the Italian Language.

I am a professional violinist, violist and conductor, studying for a PhD in Music at the University of Cambridge. As a Supervisor in the Faculty of Music, I teach undergraduate music students at Cambridge. I also teach conducting, violin, viola, and chamber music at the Saffron Walden Centre for Young Musicians in Essex. Academic Tuition
– My academic lessons tend to be structured around specific sections of the syllabus, or particular topics that students require help with.
– I employ a seminar style format, in which I flesh out ideas with the aid of quotations, other audio-visual resources, and analytical commentary which my students can use to develop essays, essay plans, revision tools, and exam revision packs.
– I use Powerpoint to provide students with a variety of resources and visual stimuli.
– I structure my lesson plans with a view to providing short points of rest or temporary closure, in which students are able to ask questions about the content. I am also happy for students to interrupt the flow of the lesson if a burning question arises.
Musical Performance
– Violin lessons tend to be carefully planned to focus on specific technical aspects of performance. To train musicality, I often teach this through the use of Kreutzer and Fiorillo etudes, Dont studies, and also pieces of repertoire catered to the student's musical interests and technical requirements.
– I am open to considering student repertoire suggestions if they are particularly passionate about a certain piece.

Teaching is my third and final career and I love it. I have over 25 years experience of helping students of all ages and abilities achieve their goals. I am a qualified teacher with 14 years in classrooms, teaching English and law, and I'm also a qualified journalist and solicitor. I found school very challenging myself, so I completely understand why many very bright students don't do as well as they could at school. The truth is, school isn't always the best place to learn. The current situation means that by September, most of the current cohort of students in year 10 are not going to know what has hit them. GCSE has become increasingly difficult since 2008 and the 2015 reform means that it is exceedingly difficult to get above grade 6. I anticipate that this year's year 11 cohort hoping to study English at A level will be similarly shellshocked. The gap between GCSE and A level is enormous and even students with a predicted grade 8 or 9 are likely to find the A level daunting to say the least. I offer one to one support online using facetime, zoom and Google docs for students able to type.
I also offer small group preparation for both next year's GCSE and A levels in both language and literature to ensure that in September they hit the ground running. These sessions are done using zoom or at my home in Ealing. Tutoring Experience:- Since 1998 I have helped literally hundreds of students to:-
* achieve grade A/A*/9 in GCSE English both literature and language;
* get into a wide range of top London schools both private and selective grammar schools including St Paul's Girls, St Paul's Boys, Henrietta Barnett, Tiffin Girls, Eton, UCS, as well as Merchant Taylor, Godolphin and Latimer, Haileybury, Hampton, John Lyons, Notting Hill and Ealing, Kew House, St James', Kings College Wimbledon, Haberdashers Askes, St Helen's Northwood, Northwood College, Royal Masonic, Habs Girls, Harrow School, Northbridge House, St Augustines, Brighton College and Latymer Upper * win scholarships to Harrow School, UCS Northwood College and Notting Hill and Ealing High. I also help children aged 4 and above who are struggling with English, French or maths. In 2019 I had five GCSE students who attend state private schools, and three who attend private schools including St. Pauls Boys; six 11+ primary students and four home-schooled students aged 7, 12, 14 and 16.
I am pleased to say that out of the 8 GCSE students, 7 got grade 9 for both English language and English literature. The other student got 9 for literstliterature for language As for my 11+ students, in February this year all 6 of them got places at their first choice schools which were NHE, Latymer Upper, Kew House, Tiffin Girls, Henrietta Barnett and Northwood College. I also see several adults on a regular or ad hoc basis, for example Claudette who is 58. Initially I helped her with GCSE English in 2016. I then supported her during her Access course. She's now halfway through her degree in physiotherapy at Birkbeck.
Background information:- My first teaching experience was as a volunteer, teaching Adult Literacy from 1985-1987 while working as a freelance journalist.
When I completed my LPC in 1994 I started tutoring law while waiting for a training contract to manifest. Halfway through that training contract I realised that I preferred working as a tutor to working in law and left law.
From 1995-97 I taught at a local boys preparatory school - Durston House - while completing my vocational training part time as a solicitor. I began tutoring fulltime in 1998 when I realised that although working in the law is fascinating, it's not a lifestyle I want, and I have been tutoring ever since. From 1999 to 2012 I was teaching English fulltime in a sixth form college which specialised in English at all levels from Functional Skills and IELTS, to academic English i.e. GCSE, Access, and A Level language, literature and lang/lit. I continued to see a few private students, and in 2012 I returned to fulltime tutoring. Ad hoc help:- Apart from tutoring, I also help adult students with their theses and dissertations, teach them how to edit their work properly, how to ensure that they are not straying off topic, and how to improve their vocabulary and expression. I can do this online or face to face. Help with personal statements, applications for research grants and CVs is available face to face or via Google docs. Children- and adults- with disabilities:- In the last 22 years I have taught literally thousands of students and many of them have had disabilities including deaf students, visually impaired students and students with cerebral palsy, as well as students with learning difficulties including AS, APD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia and ADD/ADHD. I have studied the growing problem of both ESOL and native speaking English students who have difficulty in drawing inferences from what they read. My method of teaching uses a very carefully selected range of texts to focus on intensely in order to determine whether further investigation is appropriate. I am not qualified to diagnose autism but I have successfully taught many students on the spectrum. Tutoring Approach:- Alongside teaching, I have studied the psychology of learning and have many tools at my disposal to teach the skills that today's students and job seekers need. If you are struggling in school, college or university, it is not your fault. My job is to ensure that you do not need a tutor as quickly as possible while offering ongoing support if necessary. I believe that given the right atmosphere, attitude and support, anyone can succeed. A stressful environment makes learning almost impossible, so my lessons are extremely relaxing. Students are usually amazed at how fast the time passes. At the end of the session I ensure the student understands everything covered in that session, and may ask for the student to complete an appropriate length homework to bring to the next session. My motto is "self talk determines destiny" and I help students to unlearn the idea that they can't do something. My approach is first to ensure that I am the right tutor for the student. The first session is designed for the student (and their parents) to assess me, as well as for me to work out the student's current level of ability and their learning style. In subsequent sessions the most important thing is to ensure that the student has no gaps in their understanding of the subject and what is required. So I always begin at the beginning and usually students progress very quickly through the first phase. Once they are reasonably confident and have caught up with their school's expectations, I begin to stretch them, at their own pace. I believe that students want to do well but are self-conscious and dislike asking for help at school as it makes them feel stupid. Lack of basic understanding results in lack of self confidence which can easily develop into becoming withdrawn or disruptive in class, or hating the subject. It is quite easy to turn the student's attitude around once they realise that they can succeed, so I do a lot of confidence building exercises and use praise and humour to help them see what they are doing wrong and what they are doing right. As a result of this, their self esteem is enhanced and they become more willing to contribute in class and take risks, rather than sitting in the back of the classroom praying for the time to pass. I use my own resources which I have developed by studying assessment criteria and objectives of all of the boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC) as well as the specifics of GCSE and IGCSE. For 11+ and CE I use a wide range of texts that are demanding and lend themselves to students learning how to explore linguisruc effects. I prefer to tutor at the student's home because I think students feel more secure and relaxed in their own home, however students can of course, come to me if this suits them better. Parents are welcome to sit in on sessions as long as the student feels comfortable with that. I am always happy to consider teaching friends at the same time to keep costs down (max group size 4 students), and am happy to negotiate an appropriate rate for group sessions. Such sessions take place in my home. Please note the following:- 1. I charge a supplement of £7.50 to travel upto 3 miles as well as a residents parking ticket if necessary or reimbursement for parking costs;
2. I require a minimum of 48 hours notice of cancellation or payment in full (except for travel time) under all circumstances including sudden illness.Whenever possible I will offer a session later in the week but this is not always possible.
3. On Sundays I only teach from my home;
4. For distances beyond 3 miles radius of my home, the minimum session is an hour and a half. This can be shared between siblings, or between subjects eg maths and English, maths and French or English and French;
5. For distances beyond 5 miles radius of my home, I charge for one hour of my time, or an uber in both directions, whichever is cheaper, instead of £7.50. These sessions are also a minimum of an hour and a half, which can be shared between siblings or subjects;
6. All GCSE and A level students are welcome to send me essays of upto 1000 words to comment on between sessions. There is no charge.for this service. Finally, if you would like references from current or previous students (or their parents) please just ask.

My students range from age 6-60 and I cover beginner to advanced level. I currently teach around 20 students a week, and have helped them achieve distinctions in Rock school and Trinity examinations whilst furthering their stylistic and technical awareness. I’m also experienced in teaching via Zoom and Skype, and am DBS checked. Outisde of teaching, i regulalry perform function gigs accorss the UK and am part of an originals band, Borderlines.
Graduated by the Musicians Institute (MI), home of the Percussion Institute of Technology (PIT), in Los Angeles, California, in the Professional Percussion Player Program, March/1996.
Drummer since 1984, becoming professional in 1989. Since 1986 participates actively in musical groups, has great experience on stage, studio and teaching. Took part in many tours in Brazil some regions of Argentina and south of the USA.
In 1992 started his activities as a drum kit teacher.
In 1995 relocated to the USA with the purpose of studying in the above-cited school. After graduating at PIT worked playing with artists, in recording sessions and as a teacher at the Eubanks Conservatory of Music and Arts, where in September of 1996, became the Percussion Department Director.
Coming back to Brazil, in 1998, Felipe started to develop his own teaching method, using his experience as student at MI and private lessons, and as a teacher. He has written methods for absolute beginners, for Rock Drumming, Rudiments, Playing Techniques and Rhythmic Reading, all methods use Accelerative Learning Techniques. These methods were used at COM (Centro de Orientacao Musical), Sao Paulo, Brazil, during the years of 2001-2002.
After teaching privately and playing as a session musician and side-man, in 2003 became the Drums and Percussion Department Director at Voice Musical Centre ( www.*** ), also in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
From 2004 until 2012 Felipe was a very active collaborator of the magazine Modern Drummer Brasil,
In 2006 Felipe decided to relocate to London in search of new horizons, new challenges and new musical opportunities. Since then Felipe has been teaching, doing session work and live performances.
From 2007 until 2012 was part of the teaching team of The Planet Drum ( www.*** ) when after this 5-year stint decided to open his own teaching practice.
Since 2011 Felipe is an active member of a new rock outfit in London, Cherry White ( www.*** ) who are being considered the new bearers of the classic rock banner, having recorded one EP, one CD and have just released a new single which is being very well received by the specialised press.
2014 has brought a lot of good news. Since October 2013 Felipe has been taking drums lessons again with drummer extraordinaire, drums ambassador and educator Dom Famularo ( www.*** ) from New York, the lessons are via Skype. Dom has recognised in Felipe the competence, the capacity and the passion making him part of his selected team of educators and also referring him to the education teams of D’Addario and Sabian (two major drum manufacturing companies who are serious about drumming education.). Felipe is a member of the D’Addario Education Collective and Sabian Education Network and is a proud endorser of Promark drumsticks and Evans drumheads.
In March 2014 Felipe went to Frankfurt for the Musikmesse, an international fair for music instruments and all articles related to music, invited by Dom Famularo and the above-cited companies. In the same weekend Felipe went to Paris for the Vic Firth’s Private Drums Teachers Seminar, led by Mr Famularo and with the presence of the legendary Vic Firth himself.
From 2nd to 6th June Felipe has spend a whole week at WizDom Drumshed in Long Island, NY with the great Dom Famularo for a period of coaching. One-to-one lessons from 9am to 6pm.
In 2016 Felipe had his first book published, Play the Drums by Wizdom Media, a book for beginners using Accelerated Learning techniques, making the process of learning the instrument faster and more fun.
July 2018 brought one of the greatest experiences in Felipe’s career. He received a scholarship from Sabian Education Network to attend Billy Cobham’s Art of the Rhythm Section Retreat, in Mesa, Arizona. He spent a whole week having lessons with Billy Cobham and his band about the art of playing in a rhythm section.
On 30th September 2018 Felipe was part of the Sabian Education Network panel at the UK Drum Show in Manchester.

I have over 7 years experience of teaching Music Technology & Production subjects in Secondary and Further Education, as well as weekend-based extra-curricular 'workshop' programmes. I''ve also spent the last 10 years working as a producer, remixer and DJ in the Dance music industry.
Needless to say, music is a huge passion of mine and I love to share it with other like-minded individuals, regardless of age or ability level. I have a breadth of experience in teaching Music Technology subjects at AS/ A-Level in-line with the Pearson Edexcel curriculums, as well as BTEC & Rock School Levels 1, 2, and 3. I've also taught GCSE Music in-line with the Edexcel, AQA and OCR syllabus', so I'm happy to help you with any production or DJ technology-based areas of your GCSE studies.
