What is the history of Swing Dance?

The history of swing goes back to sometime in the 1920s when the black community was dancing modern Jazz, discovering the Charleston and Lindy Hop.

The Savoy Club was opened in New York City. It immediately became a hit and with its huge dance floor and 2 levels of space for musicians, attracted some of the best dancers in the New York area. The club fostered the performance of amazing dancers and some of the best black bands at the time. The music at the Savoy was basically Swinging Jazz.

One night in 1927 while following Charles Lindbergh's flight to Paris a local dancer nicknamed "Little George" was watching couples dance at the Savoy. A local reporter was next to him and asked him what dance the couples were doing. "Little George" had seen a newspaper left on the bench next to him with the headline "Lindy Hops The Atlantic" and replied "Lindy Hop" and the name stuck.

With the discovery of the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug, the societies began to dance modern Jazz and Swing dances as their development was very intense.

In the late 1940s, soldiers and sailors returning from sailing continued to dance the Jitterbug on military bases. The Jitterbug was danced to country music in country bars and became more popular in the 1980s.
