I am a well qualified and experienced teacher of Modern Foreign & Classical Languages with over 30 years experience teaching in local State and Independent Schools and in adult and further education colleges. I have taught French, German, Spanish, Italian, Classics and Latin from Key Stage 3 through to A- Level and am a GCSE examiner for the Pearson Edexcel exam board. I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
In my lessons, my goal is to teach you, with fun, humour and encouragement, how to use language confidently in listening, speaking, reading and writing and of course backing this up with a very sound knowledge of those building blocks called grammar. In Latin, the grammar based language study is backed up with a fun and detailed look at the historical period and the set texts. We all have differing learning needs and goals which are worked out well in advance of the first lesson so that the approach is tailor made for you so that you ultimately find the learning experience a rewarding and enjoyable one. When teaching , I use my experience of being an examiner to show you what the exam paper is really asking for and how you can ensure you get the marks and ,quite easily, exceed target. Just ask any of my former pupils! I am very friendly, patient and approachable, always encouraging with a strong belief that bit by bit you will succeed in whichever goal you have made for yourself?

Hi - I'm Nic S. and I've dedicated most of my life to music. If you're passionate about music, I'd really love to help you improve your skills, and develop your creativity. My first instrument (Which I've studied to degree level) is guitar, and I consider this instrument my 'Home base'. Music is more than just 'playing guitar' though, so I'm also open to teaching music theory, composition, songwriting, production, engineering as well as mixing and mastering. I don't work to a curriculum, and I don't teach grades (Unless it's what a student wants). Whatever you're struggling with is what we'll focus on, and the music that excites you is the music we'll be learning about! I'm here to teach you, for you. I teach to all ages, up to Grade 8 on the Drums, Grade 4 on the Guitar and on the Piano I will teach to a high standard, but not through the grading system as I only teach basic level sight reading for Piano.
I have taught many students over the years at varying ages and skill levels, and all have come out more passionate and more improved at there instrument.
My students have all mentioned how they find there lessons thoroughly productive and enjoyable, finding themselves increasingly motivated to play after having lessons with me. (see references at the bottom)
In my lessons I will take the students up through the Grades (ONLY for Drums and Guitar), via Rockschool, teaching them everything they need from technique, learning how to sight read, developing improvisation skills, playing in many different genres of music, and how to play by ear. I will also cover how to complement the music you are playing to and how to serve the music. As well as developing musicianship skills and how to have the right attitude in the music business.
- on the Piano I will teach to a high standard, going through everything listed above, as well as scales, arpeggios, inversions, learning classical and contemporary pieces, and basic level sight reading, but NOT grades unfortunately.
