I have worked at various schools including special needs. In these organisations I have worked with young people including those on the autistic spectrum, those with behavioural learning problems and those suffering from mental health issues. I have always found it is key to strike up a good relationship with the young person, understand their problems and work with them to help them develop mentally and socially as well as helping them to gain the best outcome for themselves. I find this immensely rewarding.
I have led Maths departments at three of the schools that I have worked at. I have taught GCSE, IGCSE, GCSE Statistics and Functional Skills level 1 and 2 This entailed researching new Maths ideas including the Singapore method and the Complete Maths curriculum. I have presented teaching ideas to fellow practitioners at my school and others. I have been the school’s examination officer and have marked examination scripts for Pearsons. I have taken part in the school development, for example looking to build maths into the whole curriculum. I have always sought to develop as a practitioner and looked to do something that was advantageous to the school I was working with.

I am a qualified SENCo with vast experience working in mainstream and independent schools across Hampshire and Portsmouth Local Authorities. I am a qualified Specialist Dyslexia Teacher with a number of qualifications in teaching pupils with dyscalculia and numeracy difficulties. Currently, I am studying for a Level 7 qualification in Dyscalculia assessing and teaching, this will consolidate the years of teaching pupils with dyscalculia and dyslexia in a specialist department. My special needs experience extends to the opening of an Autism and Mental Health provision alongside the managing of a dyslexia and dyscalculia provision. I have worked closely with the Local Authorities to support families through the Education Health and Care Plan application process with much success.
Originally, I started out as a music teacher within primary settings until my passion for supporting pupils with additional needs rose up and inspired me to take my initial SEN qualification through training in recognising and teaching Dyslexia and literacy difficulties. From this there was no looking back! I went on to work as a Special Needs Coordinator in three schools across Hampshire and Portsmouth supporting all age groups from 2-16 achieving the National SENCo qualification; later working on my passion for the lesser known Specific Learning Difficulties of Dyscalculia.
My greatest joy and education has come from the adoption of my three children where I have taken extensive training in attachment and trauma informed practice, NVR, therapeutic parenting and the use of PACE. I have first hand knowledge and experience of living and working with autistic individuals and celebrating Neurodiversity in her family life. Anne knows first hand the difficulties of navigating the school SEN systems as a parent and this experience can never be measured but leads to a greater understanding and providing advocacy for parents and pupils alike.

Encouraging activities such as social stories will help in behavioural development of verbal and non -verbal children, which is very important as early detection can improve communication skills. Students are supported in a variety of different ways as appropriate to their needs which include individual support, in small groups and in class. Base on National Curriculum, I am matching the learning to the needs and abilities of the students using a range of strategies to develop the pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills including the use of ICT. I focus on the well- structured lessons and I am adapting learning materials such as worksheets, books and activities to suit the students’ needs. As a class teacher, I continually assess each child and note areas where they are improving and where further support is needed. To manage behaviour effectively in the class, I have to make myself consistent and predictable- in lesson structure and in how I intervene and respond- this means having a lot of emotional control; avoiding the complex language, being plain and simple and use of imagery will help in keeping calm students with challenging behaviour. I encourage positive friendships- my own friendship with students as well as helping them makes positive relationships themselves. Modelling the appropriate behaviour I want to maintain in class means that it was established a good and safe learning environment for all students.

It is my job as a teacher to inspire the children in my care so at 8:50 we start the show with enthusiasm no matter how exhausted we feel. One of my favourite things about teaching children with Special Needs is that you get more freedom with what you teach and how you teach it. It really is all about the individual child and finding a way to inspire them, enabling them to understand the concept. Creating multi- sensory activities are fantastic- giant story sacks, singing and dancing, cooking and eating and of course anything that involves of bit of mess.
Teaching children with Special Needs is not super easy so I will not last 2 minutes without a sense of humour. If you don’t laugh, you will cry!
All these qualities are essential to any type of teaching, but you need an extra measure of each of them to succeed in a Special Needs environment. Teaching in a SEN School is a challenging job, but it is by a long way the most rewarding.

Hello, I am a student looking to begin tutoring younger students. Currently, I am studying educational psychology. I have always been a very average student, typically getting B's in school with the occasional A - so if you're looking for someone super smart, that won't be me.
