Thank you for viewing my profile! Please take some time to read through my profile before contacting me. My name is Steven, 45 from Worcester. I am a friendly and compassionate Maths Tutor, and published academic author who is deeply passionate about tutoring and helping others to succeed.
I am a graduate from the University of Aston Birmingham. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a certificate in Mathematics from the Open University and have A levels in Maths, Physics, Economics and General Studies.I am available from 4 to 9 in and around the Worcester area. Since the covid pandemic I teach online only, so I am able to teach students from other parts of the UK.
I have lectured part time at Halesowen College in the black country and have over 20 years of experience teaching Mathematics up to GCSE level on a ‘one to one’ basis. In 2015 100% of the students that I taught gained grade C or above in Mathematics, some even moved up two grades from their predicted level as a result of my one to one tuition. I have presented and authored several Maths revision DVDs that have been sold on amazon and used in UK schools as well as in other countries as far off as New Zealand and India.
I have taught a wide range of students with varied abilities and conditions including ADHD, cerebral palsy, anxiety and depression. I specialise in helping students with low levels of confidence and self esteem to help them succeed and gain the results that they want. I feel deeply privileged to be able to help others achieve academically and make a difference to their lives.
I am fully CRB checked in compliance with the protection of children act 1999. I can provide up to 3 references from parents of students that I have recently taught. My rates are very competitive and included in my fees are free Maths revision videos, notes and past papers.

** Please only contact me if you are serious about wanting tuition and can commit to lessons once a week or fortnightly (no time wasters please). Due to a high demand for my time I have to schedule appointments. Once we have agreed to start tuition you will be offered a regular time slot each week or every other week. I do not teach on an adhoc basis. If you need to cancel a lesson then I will need at least 24 hours notice otherwise the full cost of the lesson will be charged.**

I have more than 11 years experience of tutoring pupils of all ages. I enjoy tutoring and am considered to have a caring approach and I try to make sure that learning takes place in a relaxed but studious situation. When tutoring, I find it very important to allow the student to feel confident in their work using lots of praise. It is important that the student feels they can get something wrong, so long as they try. This helps me to find out any misconceptions they might have, so I can re-teach any topics they may need refreshing. I ensure children are challenged age appropriately, and support learners to gain confidence when they are back in the classroom. I am able to work at home or in the pupil's home (happy to travel up to 5 miles from my home) and am currently available evenings and week-ends.

I have continued my professional development with dedication and motivation to the holistic development of young people. As a teaching assistant, higher level teaching assistant, and trainee teacher, I have worked with a range of pupils within a variety of settings from EYFS through to KS4, including pupils who are Academically More Able, Special Educational Needs/Additional Learning Needs, and Pupil Premium. This has given me a broad insight as to the range of provision implemented, early help provided to families, and the process undertaken to obtain an EHCP, along with collaborating with outside agencies.
My school experience, coupled with teaching placements, has enabled me to reflect on my philosophy and pedagogy. This has enabled me to recognise the importance of valuing each child as they are all unique and they matter. I am committed to ensuring the learning I generate is interesting, creative, and exciting. I am always looking to engage with opportunities to progress my pedagogy further into my profession. In view of this, I hope to find a school where access to good quality educational experiences beyond the classroom is of great importance. I genuinely believe that core subject attainment can be considerably enhanced, especially in areas of Pupil Premium, when learning is applied to practical activities. An example of this would be teaching Science-circulatory system and living things- Maths -which maths mastery was implemented- English -through precision teaching and the carrying out of shared writes and History when pedagogy cross-curricular lessons of the Greek gods and the Olympics-both ancient and modern-day, using a range of resources to explain the different parts, such as artifacts of Greece, heart, and lungs, respectively. Another example would be, creating a medium-term plan “Earth's Unleashed” topic which entailed Geography, History, and Science cross-curricular lessons to investigate how and why human disasters happen. From the onset, immersing these topics help to bring them to life for the children but it also teaches the classes respect and provides an excellent opportunity to develop a new and very effective behaviour management strategy, ‘teamwork’. When planning and delivering the “Earth’s Unleased” topic, I introduced visual photos and related the lesson focus on Art when painting, using an array of coloured pencils and a variety of resources, such as sponges and cotton wool. At this point in my training, I gained further experience in planning and delivering lessons that are imaginative and creative, aiming to encourage engagement from all learners.
I understand the importance of assessment and use both a range of assessment strategies from observations in schools, as well as formulating my own. In every lesson that I teach, I use a range of formative assessment strategies, including thumbs-up, peer marking, and questioning, supported with verbal and written feedback. During my most recent placement, my mentor regularly highlighted that verbal feedback is one of my biggest strengths, along with Maths. I am fascinated by how children learn and what they are learning. I find dialogue to be a highly effective method of assessment, as when discussing in pairs or groups I can identify any misconceptions and address them, acknowledge their interpretation, and help secure their cognition for life-long learning.
I find it immensely informative to track pupils' progress after every lesson. This enables me to identify the most appropriate pedagogy to enable their cognition to develop further. Throughout my career in education to date, I have acknowledged that teaching needs to be adapted either every day or during the actual lesson, for children to acknowledge and understand the concepts. However, I use both formative and summative assessment to directly inform my planning, as time is valuable.
My ethos as a teacher has developed further during my teacher training. I place significant value on communication and the development of listening skills, as it is my ambition to expand my knowledge and the implementation of Philosophy 4 Children within the classroom. I will provide opportunities for groups wherever possible, as this is a proven method of increasing attainment. I will ensure the children in my care achieve their full potential, supporting them dynamically, and adapting my teaching to suit their learning. Throughout my teaching experience I have spent many hours working with Pupil Premium and SEN children, this also enables relationships to build and to get to know each other’s interests.
I am a tutor with over 25 years experience across all key stages and tutoring adults. I graduated from the University of Durham in 1992 with a BA Hons in Music before training as a primary school teacher. After 10 years I moved to secondary where I was Head of Music and taught Music, Mathematics, English and EPQ. I have extensive experience working with different learning needs and was responsible for introducing a phonics support programme at my own children's school when they were diagnosed with Dyslexia. I have just finished my second year of undergraduate studies in physical natural sciences at Cambridge, on course for a first-class degree and continuing with physics and maths next year. I am an enthusiastic tutor with experience teaching A-level physics, chemistry and maths. I focus on building a strong subject knowledge base with a view to improving exam grades. I believe that time effective revision is key to exam succes; I plan to teach students the techniques that I used to achieve straight 9s at GCSE and straight A*s at A level.
