What is Java?

Java is one of the most used programming languages in the world. Created more than 20 years ago, the language continues to evolve and improve to meet the ever-evolving needs of the market. It is also one of the most preferred languages for beginner programmers because it is applicable practically anywhere.

Java is a programming language that is designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible. It is a general-purpose programming language intended to let programmers write once, run anywhere (WORA), meaning that compiled Java code can run on all platforms that support Java without the need for recompilation. Java applications are typically compiled to bytecode that can run on any Java virtual machine (JVM) regardless of the underlying computer architecture.

What can you do with Java?

Everything. But in the following lines, I'll give you specific examples of websites, applications, and even games that are written in Java and that you probably use every day.

Desktop applications. Java is used to write many of the programs we use every day, such as our antivirus program, our media player, or your browser. Examples of applications written in Java are Microsoft Edge (which is not the best advertisement) and Eclipse.

Mobile apps. Many of our mobile phones run the Android operating system, which would not exist without Java. It's also the official language for writing Android apps, and probably all the apps you're currently using are built with the language. I won't give specific examples. All you need to do is Google search "Is the (app name) app written in Java?". The answer will be yes.

Business software. Business software is a collection of applications that serve the needs of an entire enterprise, not the individual user. In recent times, this type of application has become increasingly popular as digitalization is an important process in the development of a successful business. The creators of Java claim that 97% of business software is written in their language. Companies that use software written in Java are Trivago, Spotify, Pinterest and Google.

Web applications. Java is widely used in creating web applications. It provides easy syntax and a high level of security, making it very popular in services that involve sensitive information such as online forms in institutions. Some of the platforms that use Java are Ebay, Google, Facebook, Amazon And Linkedin.

Games. While not one of the most basic languages for creating video games, Java definitely has the capability to do so, as long as the person writing the code knows what they are doing. An example of the most popular Java game is Minecraft, which is enough in itself. But if that's not enough for you, here are a few more.

Is it hard to learn Java?

In the beginning, Java may look like a really hard language to learn but actually it is not. With the right teachers and many hours of practice, you can learn Java and master it. There are many materials online you can use and a lot of professionals offer their courses to help you.
