Certificate to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) Music Educator’s Diploma Member of the Musician’s Union Member of the Registry of Guitar Tutors Current enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure Peripatetic music teacher Lead guitarist in 2 bands
I started playing guitar in 1981, playing all styles of music (although mainly rock and pop music). I also studied classical guitar for several years. I teach all levels and abilities across all ages at competitive rates. Lessons are one-to-one so there is no pressure and you can learn at your own pace, in a friendly well equipped environment. Learning guitar should be fun, rewarding and something that can be enjoyed for life. I also offer vouchers which can be used as Birthday or Christmas presents.
Certificate to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector
When looking for guitar lessons I would advise you to look for a guitar teacher that has a Certificate to Teach In Life Long Learning Sector (CTLLS).
Although it is not mandatory to have any formal qualifications to teach guitar, you may want to ask yourself: would you send your child to a school of unqualified teachers or take driving lessons off someone who was unqualified?
A guitar teacher with a CTLLS will have demonstrated the following knowledge:
understand ways to negotiate appropriate individual goals with learners understand how to plan for inclusive learning understand how to use teaching and learning strategies and resources inclusively to meet curriculum requirements understand how to use a range of communication skills and methods to communicate effectively with learners understand and demonstrate knowledge of the minimum core in own practice understand how reflection, evaluation and feedback can be used to develop own practice understand key concepts and principles of assessment understand and use different types of assessment understand the strengths and limitations of a range of assessment methods, including, as appropriate, those which exploit new and emerging technologies understand the role of feedback and questioning in the assessment of learning understand how to monitor, assess, record and report learner progress and achievement to meet the requirements of the learning programme and the organisation. understand how to evaluate the effectiveness of own practice

Music Educator’s Diploma
The Level 3 Diploma for Music Educators is ideal for musicians working in educational contexts who wish to develop fundamental teaching and learning concepts together with an increased understanding of areas such as employment opportunities, self-employment and marketing. The qualifications for Music Educators are flexible, in that learners who have completed the Level 3 Certificate can build on these units to work towards the Level 3 Diploma. Similarly, learners beginning on the Level 3 Diploma may subsequently decide to discontinue their studies after having achieved sufficient units to be awarded the Certificate.

Current enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure
WHAT IS A CRB CHECK?
A Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check provides organisations with copies of any records held by the Police and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) of current or prospective workers (often through their recruitment process). These records cover the period from the workers age of 10 years old. Individuals are not permitted to apply for checks, only organisations! There are currently 2 levels of checks, Standard & Enhanced.
WHAT IS A CRB DISCLOSURE?
A disclosure is a “certificate” of the check and is issued to both the applicant and the organisation and reveals information of any convictions and can also include cautions, reprimands and warnings. This disclosure is used by the organisation (usually in the recruitment process) to make a safe, fair and just decision in placing the applicant in certain posts (usually those that come into contact with children and, or vulnerable adults).
WHAT IS AN ENHANCED CRB CHECK?
An Enhanced CRB check is the most revealing and not only reveals convictions but also, unlike a Standard check, cautions, reprimands and warnings. Enhanced checks are essential for placing the applicant with many positions involving children and/or vulnerable adults.

Bands
I have played with various bands over the years. Currently, I play guitar in:

I also played lead guitar with Tranzam, the classic rock tribute band, for ten years between 2000 and 2010. I also recently played in The 7Teez, a 70’s tribute band. Prior to that I played in Shiver, Full Confession and Razor Edge. Above is some footage of Big up the 90’s at Mathew Street festival playing to over 20,000 people. At the time this was the biggest free street music festival in Europe. I have also shared the stages with Roy Wood, Toploader and Jacki Graham to name few.

I moved to London from the midlands in the 80s to start a career producing music. I worked for MCA music in the publishing studio before going freelance to work on countless albums with very diverse artists such as Peter Gabriel, Jeff Beck, Youssou N,dour. I have worked with guitarists such as Steve lukather, Dominic Millar,Marc Ribot, Mike Stern, Kevin Armstrong. After 30 years I decided to move back to the midlands where I pass my experience on to pupils of the guitar. I teach most styles and levels including classical and electric from a dedicated teaching room in Rugeley Staffordshire. Beginners to advanced welcome.

I'm a professional Music lecturer and tutor, Guitar teacher and Bass tutor based in the West Midlands. As a Music tutor/instrumental tutor I have 1000+ hours of teaching experience, I hold a Popular Music Degree and in a College employment setting I have 14+ years experience of teaching college students from ages 16+ to adults in a range of levels (1-5).
I know every student’s journey is different, and my aim is to meet each student where they’re at, learning through Music we discuss their aims and develop the curriculum to develop their understanding.
As a musician I play in a variety of bands and performance situations as well as session work for bands and for artists up and down the UK.
I’m a Bass player for a Midlands based punk band who have released three albums and with this I have played festivals around the UK.
I play Guitar for a folk/rock band, a high end function band and also for a Queen tribute band.
As a teacher I work closely with pupils to develop personal goals, and work together on a simple plan on how to reach them. I believe understanding the reason the student is taking lessons and playing guitar/bass or embarking on other musical developments is fundamental to providing quality tuition, so I strive to create plans with the pupil to support their aims. Each lesson always keeps the pupil’s individual goals at its centre, and is created to develop musical fluency.
Ultimately I teach the student to teach themselves by understanding core musical concepts and developing a base of fundamental skills, these include; Ear Training - learning how to recognise the chords in any given song by ear; Strumming and Picking/Fingerpicking Technique - fluency with all standard right hand techniques is a must, and I teach these prioritising what is commonly used in their favourite styles; Reading TAB as well as Staff notation.
Creative Playing, Song Writing, and Improvising is my favourite area of playing and teaching as it helps learners find their own voice! I help to build knowledge of music theory in a practical and applicable way, exploring new concepts that will enable students to discover new sounds.
Again, this is catered to their aims - if they wish to write songs we'll look at some of their favourite artists/genres, see what they're doing, and set some aims for targets to write using some of their techniques.
If learners want to improvise, we'll explore some of our favourite improvisers - what scales to they use, how do they shape their phrases, and what articulation techniques are employed.
If learners have experience playing but need to improve techniques I can show drills and exercises that will make them a better player.
We explore a lot of aspects - from how to move economically; where to have tension and where to avoid it; tonal possibilities as well as how to structure your practice so you get the most for your time, whether you have a little or a lot.

Now I do all my lessons on line, either by Skype, Zoom or any other equivalent .It is cheaper for the pupil, no travelling, so no fuel used, and easier all round as the timings can be changed easily on either side, to suit any sudden problems.
I teach reading music as a given, right from the beginning. Either classical or acoustic but no specific styles, i. e. country, folk, blues etc. No, I will teach you to play properly with tutor books and additional material and with the knowledge gained you will eventually be able to play in whatever style suits you, but I will not teach a style at the lesson.
Having 60 books of guitar music published in 5 different publishers, and having played, arranged, transcribed and written all forms of guitar music since my teens, I am uniquely equipped to teach anyone whether a beginner, or an advanced player or any level in between.
I am often asked to transcribe unpublished classical guitar recordings onto sheet music which I will do happily for a fee, should anyone be interested.
I now have my own classical guitar sheet music and CD review site at www.allclassicalguitar.co.uk and so my working life is completely music based.

One of the great joys of playing an instrument is to become able to capture the emotive force that the artistes you so admire can evoke.
Discover how they do it. What scales they use, how they create their sublime musical phrases, what their vibrato is like, what ornamentation they favour...
No doubt you want to get a foot in the door fast.
Learn some power chords and play along with your favourite records in the first lesson.
Don't feel abashed about lacking any previous experience. It's not neccessary. I've taken many adult total beginners up to public performance level.
Music theory, Rock, Pop, Acoustic Guitar and Bass Grades.
You don't have to do them but it's nice to be able to guage your progress and if you're hoping to do a GCSE in music or go to a music college being able to show your credentials can be essential to getting an audition.
My students have a 100% pass rate across 30 years.

Growing up, I spent 8 years playing in a church band before heading to university. Although I went on to study engineering and then human resources, I continued teaching music — whether online or face-to-face.
Have you ever listened to a song and wished you could just pick up a guitar and play along without checking the chords? My lessons will give you the tools to play by ear, enabling you to join in effortlessly and confidently without relying on chord charts. Whether you’re picking up the guitar for the first time or refining your technique, I offer a flexible and personalised approach to help you achieve your musical goals.
My lessons are tailored to each student's skill level and goals, whether you're a beginner learning the basics or an experienced player looking to refine your skills. We’ll cover everything from essential techniques like strumming and fingerpicking to advanced topics such as soloing, music theory, and improvisation.
For electric and bass guitar students, we’ll explore tone shaping, amplification, and various genres. My aim is to build your confidence through hands-on guidance and practice, ensuring that learning remains engaging and enjoyable.

I have been teaching guitar and music theory for over a decade, as well as being an active professional musician. Graduating with a 1st Class degree in Music from Southampton University, I have since worked with many world class artists including Joss Stone, Jeff Beck, Beverley Knight, Joselyn Brown, Nitin Sawhney, Lamar, Mica Paris, Incognito, Lack Of Afro, Leigh Coleman, The Voice contestant Hannah Berney, Keith Emerson, KT Tunstall… I have performed at prestigious venues and festivals worldwide including Wembley Stadium, The Royal Albert Hall, Byron Bay Blues Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival.
I have over a decade of experience teaching guitar and music theory in colleges and schools, as well as teaching private students and running group and university workshops. I have a full DBS check, Public Liability Insurance and am a member of the Musicians Union and the Registry of Guitar Tutors.
I uphold a friendly and professional attitude towards lessons, making sure the student gets the most out of their time with me and has fun. I encourage students to nurture their creativity in their musical journey, learning not just to play and reproduce what they hear, but develop their own voice, improvise and compose for themselves, be it a short riff or a symphony!
Lessons are planned around the students needs and abilities. I am able to teach all abilities from beginner to advanced, in all styles (including classical, rock, pop, funk and jazz) on both electric and acoustic guitar. Sight reading, reading tablature, and music theory are all taught within the lesson and I am able to tutor students through performance and theory exams. It’s not all about results, but for students looking to take grade exams I offer Rock School, RGT, LCM, ABRSM and Trinity College exam boards. I have a proven track record of success, with over 95% of students achieving a Distinction, and 100% achieiving Merit or higher. I can also support students with GCSE and A-Level studies in Music.
When I’m not teaching, performing or behind a guitar, you’ll probably find me walking through the Devon countryside with my miniature dachshund or enjoying some good food and local ale with my wife and baby son.

Joss was born in the small seaside fishing town of Oban on the north west coast of Scotland and moved to Glasgow at an early age. It was in Glasgow where Joss started to take an interest in jazz, becoming involved with jazz workshops and big band at the Glasgow Arts Centre and performing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland (NYJOS).
Aged seventeen Joss moved to London to study jazz at university. He was taught harmony and theory by Pete Churchill (Jazz Education award 2007) and Nikki Iles (Jazz Education award nominee 2007 & 2009) and had guitar tuition under the guidance of multi-instrumentalist Stuart Hall and Phil Robson (Winner of 'Best Jazz musician of the Year' 2009). Joss also developed his performing skills with tuition by founding members of Loose Tubes - Eddie Parker and jazz educator - trumpeter Chris Batchelor.
After graduating with an honours degree in Jazz (BA Music Jazz Studies) Joss stayed in London for several years working professionally before studying for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and moving to Devon where he still resides. Joss continues to gig with some of the top musicians in the South West.

Here are some people's comments on my lessons.
"My daughter loves her guitar lessons with Mikey and is now progressing well with Nat 5 Music. His relaxed vibe, patience and humour makes lessons fun and inspiring. We would highly recommend him."
We’ve loved having Mikey as our guitar teacher for over 4 years now.
He’s patient, knowledgeable, flexible and very easy going - even our dog loves it when he comes :-)
He’s currently teaching one of our 16 year old boys (since age 12)and has helped him with everything from Ed Sheeran to Jimmy Hendrix to a bit of Bach (the latter for a school assignment).
We would definitely recommend him 👍
