My teaching is based on playing to actual music, not boring, repetitive exercises. We might work on Trinity Rock and Pop graded tunes and learning those charts, or your own favourite music that you've always wanted to learn and jam to.
Obviously specific drum and snare related exercises have their uses, but only to get you playing what you want to play.
Whatever your style, I get you results.
Those results though, take a bit of effort from you too, and that's cool, isn't it? I'll make sure that you know what you need to be practising to move forward, and you just need to do that. Deal?!
I teach at my studio (online and in-person) and peripatetically in schools and colleges. I am the Lead Music Mentor for Essex Music Service (EMS), running and facilitating projects for children with learning disabilities. I spent some time at Barnet and Southgate College as their Music Lecturer specialising in teaching their SEN and those with Autism, PMLD and LD. I'm also the Musical Inclusion Specialist for MusicNet East.
Most of all, I'm a professional drummer and experienced teacher, offering friendly and bespoke tuition from my studio in Rainham, Essex (or online via FaceTime/Skype/Zoom). I teach semi-professionals to absolute beginners, but am also trained in teaching children and young people.
I am a registered Drumsense Master Tutor and Drumsense Tutor Trainer and fully CRB checked. Maidstone's longest standing and most experienced drum tutor, established in 1998 with 34 years playing and 20 years teaching experience. All ages and all abilities are welcome and have taught students from 4 years old to 80+ with many now making their own career from performing or teaching drums. All aspects and styles of drumming covered including rock, pop, jazz, metal, double bass. Students can study just for fun or to obtain Grades in Drumsense, Rockschool and Trinity College Grades to Grade 8 with 100% pass rate at Distinction level for all grades and exam boards, as well working towards Duke of Edinburgh Awards. One to one are given lessons given in a friendly and understanding manner and tailored to each individual students needs and aspirations. Lessons are available 7 days a week and given in a purpose built soundproof studio and the only studio in the area to use fully acoustic drum kits. There is also a stereo PA system for playing along to tracks including a library of over 3000 drumless tracks. All aspects of learning drums is covered, including free advice on drums, cymbals, sticks and tuition material. Discounted prices on sticks and drum heads are also available.

My name is José María de Lucas Sacristán, though most know me as Chema Sacristán. I've been a professional drummer since 2004. I'd like to share a brief biography of my career in the U.K. In 2002, at 19, I realized my love for music and moved to Bristol, U.K., where I lived for four years. Bristol exposed me to all sorts of music, including rock, jazz, world music, and more. I played my first shows and worked with over five different local bands, gaining valuable experience. In 2006, I moved to London to study at Tech Music Schools, known as "Drum Tech," where I completed my higher education and earned a BMUS in Popular Music Performance (Hons), licensed by West London University. After completing my degree in 2011, I worked exclusively as a performing drummer and drum teacher, giving private lessons in my own studio, Oktopus Music Services, in North West London. In the past nine years, I've had the privilege of performing, recording, and writing with some of the best musicians in the London and U.K. scene, such as Kevin Glasgow (one of Europe's best bassists), Robin Banerjee (Amy Winehouse's guitarist), Roberto Manzin (Zucchero), Felipe Martíns (Emeterians), Juan Whist (The Voice National Spanish TV), and many others. Educator - 2013-present – I first began teaching drum lessons at Hazelwood school in 2013, as part of my teaching assistant role. Since graduating from LCCM in 2018, I’ve taught drums in and around the London area, both privately and peripatetically, for HaytoHome music and most recently for the School of Rhythm in Penge. My students range from age 6-60 and I cover beginner to advanced level. I currently teach around 20 students a week, and have helped them achieve distinctions in Rock school and Trinity examinations whilst furthering their stylistic and technical awareness. I’m also experienced in teaching via Zoom and Skype, and am DBS checked. Outisde of teaching, i regulalry perform function gigs accorss the UK and am part of an originals band, Borderlines.
For ten years I've been playing professionally in various contexts: Tiger Lillies, Michael Rosen, Hot Swing Boheme, Jowe Head, Psychoyogi and many more in the jazz, pop, punk, rock, progressive rock, funk and cabaret genres. I love how diverse cultures, mediums, ideas and experiences are linked by music, which has given me a more enriched life.
Before achieving my 2:1 Bachelor's Honours degree at DrumTech/London College of Music, I was an actor and self-taught drummer. But I've also worked as a singer and done sessions as a guitarist, keyboardist and bassist in some contexts, and the connection between drumming and these areas is huge. I learned my musical voice from experimentation, composition and perspiration. Dancing has helped me discover it too.
My latest DBS equivalent is the ACRO international criminal record check in 2019.
These days I'm usually teaching in person at Hicaz Studio in Stoke Newington, east London, which is available. But in my home in north London we can have lessons on video with a little more time flexibility in my dedicated music studio.
Playing well and teaching are two different things. I love to study and learn from what challenges each student brings to the session. We each have a unique musical voice, and that is the reason we learn all these technical skills, rather than conforming to a type.
I want you to be motivated to teach yourself as I did. I have trained students who went on to complete grades and do professional work. In my 10 years of teaching experience, I've also experience with learning difficulties as an amanuensis in universities across London, tutoring excluded students in north London, and working in formal classroom settings as a teaching assistant. Currently I'm training in supporting students with dyslexia and related difficulties.
The most well-being I get from music is singing, which I have done since I was young, and since then have also sang lead vocals and backing vocals professionally with Tiger Lillies and Nathan Futo, Burford Society and in my own songs. But this also informs all the music work I do.

Your Achievements
For graded studies, Trinity Guildhall exams are recommended, but there are alternatives.
Aural (listening) based learning is offered with an emphasis on expanded music listening. Playing by ear, call and response, improvisation, or other listening based approaches are often underestimated. Playing depends on our improved listening, at every point. Music in a sense is the teaching of listening.
