About Drawing

Drawing is one of the oldest forms of human expression. It’s a visual art in which an artist marks paper or other surfaces with various instruments. Some of these instruments include pencils, pens, paint brushes, markers, crayons and more. With the advancements of technology throughout the years, various new methods of drawing have surfaced. Digital drawing is the act of drawing on a computer using different specialised graphics software. It can be done with a computer mouse, touchpads or touch screens depending on the device that is used.

Nowadays drawing, also referred to as art, is included as a subject in almost every school around the world as it helps children improve their creativeness, decision making and fine motor skills.

Why is learning how to draw important?

As mentioned above, drawing plays a big role in a students cognitive development. It helps children learn how to write, how to improve their hand to eye coordination and improve their analytical skills alongside boosting their creativity. Drawing isn’t a skill that should be confined only to art lessons, it can play an important role in many different subjects as well as later on in the workspace.

For young children who are a bit more shy, drawing can be a great tool to help them express themselves better. Parents can gain plenty of insights of how their children are feeling by looking at their drawings. Successfully being able to express themselves can also improve their emotional intelligence.

Fine motor skills are also something that takes practice to improve, the earlier you start the better. One of the first ways in which children get to improve these skills is through drawing. At first it’s just scribbling but with enough practice you’ll quickly notice improvements.

Last but not least, by getting better at drawing, children will also improve their decision making skills. They’ll constantly have to decide if they need to add something or choose a specific colour.

Is learning how to draw difficult?

This is a question that doesn’t have a straightforward answer. When we’re kids, everyone draws, but when you become an adult and the topic comes up, most of us immediately go “Oh I’m terrible at it”. The truth is, just like with any other skill, it takes a lot of time and practice to get good at. No one is born an amazing artist. Yes, some people have more creativity than others, but every great artist has gone through thousands of hours of practice in order to get to that level.

The beauty of drawing is that regardless of how “good” you are, anyone can do it. Anyone can grab a pencil and start scribbling and sketching on a piece of paper. So, if you want to know if it’s difficult to learn how to draw, first you have to ask yourself how good you want to be?

Am I too old to learn how to draw?

There is no “right” time to start drawing. Obviously children who’ve been drawing since a young age will have a much easier time, but you shouldn't let that deter you from starting. Drawing is a great hobby which allows people to relax, unwind and express themselves in their own way. Don’t compare yourself to others, take your time and you’ll slowly but surely start improving!
