About Bricklaying

A bricklayer is a type of craftsman who lays pre-cut bricks in order to construct brickwork. The role of a bricklayer is to accurately lay bricks, stone and blocks in order to build walls and other constructions. They construct and repair commercial and domestic buildings and other similar structures like foundations, chimneys etc.

Bricklaying is an ancient profession that even nowadays requires proper training. In order to become a bricklayer you can either attend a course or find an apprenticeship where you’ll be taught everything you need to know first hand.

There are a couple of ways you can become a bricklayer. You can sign up for a college course and get the necessary credentials that way, you can find an appropriate apprenticeship or you can directly try and find a job in construction where you’ll be taught how to lay bricks alongside other useful skills. Different routes are better suited for different people, so choose the one that suits you the best.

When it comes to college courses, your best bet is to do some research and see if your local college is offering courses in bricklaying. Some colleges even offer short courses that will let you figure out if this job is a good fit for you or not.

Finding an apprenticeship with a construction company is another great way of entering the industry. You can become an apprentice as early as 16 years old in some places. An apprenticeship is a bigger commitment compared to a college course, because you will likely be fully employed by your company and expected to work at least 30 hours a week.

Depending on the company you work for, your time can be split between obtaining hands-on experience on a construction site and theoretical lessons from a professional.

What skills do you need for Bricklaying?

Although you don’t need any particular skills to get started, there are certainly qualities that can be useful if you want to become a bricklayer. Some of these include:

  • Prior knowledge and experience in construction
  • Ability to work well in a team. If you work on a construction site, chances are you’ll be working with a team, so the better you are at working with others, the easier it will be.

  • The ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Construction sites usually involve strict deadlines so you’ll have to be ready to work under pressure.
  • Being handy. Although this is something you can learn and get better at, it’ll certainly help you out in the beginning.

How much do Bricklayers earn?
