About Test Preparation

Test preparation (also known as test prep) is an educational course or tutoring service that's goal is to increase students' performance on standardised tests. Examples of tests like these include entrance examinations for high school, colleges and universities.

Although for some students preparing for an exam might feel easy and straightforward, for others it isn’t as simple. Many children and adults struggle with preparations for a number of reasons: nerves, anxiety, not knowing how to prepare etc. This is why there are specialised courses that aim to help people experiencing such problems.

What is a Test Preparation course?

Taking tests doesn’t end in highschool, university students and even some professionals also have to take standardised tests on occasion. Courses in test prep are designed to help students better understand the topics of their exams as well as provide them with tips and tricks on how to study more efficiently.

A course in test preparation can be beneficial in many different ways. Apart from gaining a better understanding of the material they’ll be tested on, students alo learn organisational skills and time-management techniques. Furthermore, they will be able to clearly understand their strengths and weaknesses, which will help them out in the future.

People of all ages can benefit from test preparation courses. Children in high school will get the opportunity to perform better on exams which can help in getting accepted into the university they desire. For university students, performing better on standardised tests can lead to better grades and better internship and job opportunities once they graduate. Last but not least, adults who already have jobs often need specific certifications or courses they need to pass.

What are good Test Preparation tips?

This is a difficult question to answer, as every individual is different. Test prep courses allow teachers to prepare each student individually and work with their strengths. However, there are some universal tips that you can try to incorporate into your study schedule:

  • Plan your study time - a very simple tip that many fail to incorporate. If you’re someone who has a hard time concentrating or keeping deadlines, planning your study time is a vital first step. If you can’t study for long periods of time, start by setting away an hour each day for studying. It might be hard to follow it in the beginning, but the longer you do it, the quicker it will become part of your routine.

  • Get enough sleep - this might not seem related to you, but trust us, sleep is a vital part of your study process. Although it might seem like a great idea to pull off  an “all nighter” the day before your exam, this often leads to worse results. It’s always recommended to get a good night's sleep the day before an exam, so you’re well rested and can fully concentrate.
  • Take breaks - while it might seem like a great idea to study for hours at a time, this can actually be counterproductive. Every person is different and after a while our brain has a hard time processing information. Take regular breaks to freshen up your mind
