Street dance arguably originated in the Bronx in New York City during the late 1970s, evolving outside dance studios in any available open space, such as streets, dance parties, block parties, parks, schoolyards and later at raves and in nightclubs. A street dance is a vernacular dance in an urban context — often improvisational and social in nature, encouraging interaction and contact with spectators and other dancers. The street dance came as part and parcel of the graffiti scene and includes b-boying (or breakdancing) where rival crews take part in dance stand-offs. Of course, this has been seen in many musicals, too.
