I'm currently an undergrad at Newcastle University, studying the Classics. My passion is for Doctor Who and almost anything to do with classic sci-fi and horror. I'm autistic, diagnosed since the age of 14, and so I have many experiences with other autistics and I frequently helped out with the Special Educational Needs department at my high school/sixth form. I'm a published author of horror short stories, as well as having featured on panels at FantasyCon and SciFi Weekend, with more stuff in the works. My subjects at A-Level were English Lit. (AQA), Theatre Studies (Edexcel), and Religious Studies (OCR). My high school had an internal mentoring scheme, where I helped 2 GCSE students with their English, the skills for which help with Latin and Greek immensely. For Ancient Greek, I taught a GCSE student from scratch for about 2 years, and as such created resources from scratch and would adjust my lessons on a weekly basis. For Latin, I helped the same student on a regular basis with their Latin, but at A-Level I was also asked by my Head of Classics to help the Y8s who'd joined late in the term by taking them out of lessons and catching them up on thr basic Latin skills they'd have missed. At university, I have mentored 7 different students in GCSE English literature on a weekly basis, across a wide variety of texts. Additionally, my love for Classical languages and English extended to me doing JACT's Durham Summer School between L6 and U6. That, apart from being an enjoyable time in itself and which is highly recommendable, exposed me to a lot of different teaching styles, and gave me great in-depth knowledge of the languages and the culture.

I like to try to keep my lessons fun, and I teach theory alongside the violin - they help each other! I have a 100% exam pass rate with my students, but you don't need to enter exams to learn!

I am an Associate Professor of Political Science and currently a UK Global Talent endorsed by the British Academy, London. Tutoring, for me, goes beyond regurgitating ideas; it includes motivating and inspiring students to be the best versions of themselves. I use practical and participatory pedagogy; the student is at the center of tutoring. Breaking down concepts and principles, I teach to maintain interest and attention span of my students. I often prefer maximum of 2 hours at a time.

Oliver has a passionate and highly engaging approach to tutoring. He has been teaching for 29 years and has worked in a range of educational establishments including an independent school, comprehensive schools, a selective grammar school, a middle school (Y5 to Y8) and one of the largest sixth form colleges in the country. He has also been an assistant examiner for both the Edexcel and OCR exam boards, marking hundreds of A level Biology papers in each of the years he has undertaken this additional role whilst teaching. His vast teaching and marking experience have given him the opportunity to prepare a large number of learners for their G. C. S. E Science and A level Biology examinations and he has consistently guided the vast majority of them to be extremely successful. With respect to his academic background, he attained A levels in Biology and Chemistry and AS levels in Maths and English Literature then studied ‘Applied Animal Biology’ at the University College of North Wales in Bangor and was awarded a BSc honours degree in 1993. The following year, he gained a P. G. C. E. in ‘Secondary science’ from the University of Newcastle. In many of the schools he has worked in, he has not only taught extensively but has also taken on management roles in order to have an even greater influence on learners’ success. These roles have included ‘Head of Biology’ in a comprehensive school and a grammar school, ‘Head of Science’ in a grammar school and a middle School, ‘Head of Y5’ and ‘Head of Y8’ in a middle school and ‘Programme area manager for Life Sciences’ in a sixth form college. These positions have allowed him to strongly influence the delivery of the curricula within each of the schools and the college he has worked in and to develop very strong working relationships with both learners and their parents. His interests include amateur dramatics, running and badminton.

After graduating from Newcastle University with a First-Class Degree in Journalism and Culture, I began a career in education through Teach First. I have since worked in a variety of different schools where I have shared my passion for learning with the many pupils that I have taught.
I am a fully qualified teacher with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education and extensive experience in primary settings including as Head of Maths. I have a meticulous knowledge of the primary curriculum, having taught for extended periods of my career in Year 6 as well as in lower KS2 and KS1. Most recently, I have worked as a specialist Year 6 SATs tutor educating small groups and individuals to help them to achieve accelerated progress towards their academic goals and aspirations. During this role, I have worked with a range of children including those with SEN.
I believe that there is no one set approach to improving academic standards and that instead this should be tailored towards the needs of the pupil on an individual basis. For example, this could involve providing challenging and thought-provoking material or rebuilding a pupil's understanding and confidence from the ground up. At the heart of my philosophy, I believe that tutors should build meaningful relationships with their pupils and encourage a love of learning.

My name is Justin W., and I provide tuition for GCSE English language and literature, Key Stage 2 SATs preparation, the eleven plus entrance examinations and English as a foreign language (EFL).
I’m a teacher of English at a large – successful - secondary school in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, so I am in-tune with up-to-date curriculum practices, resources and reforms. Importantly, due to my school commitments, my private tuition takes place between the hours of 4 and 9pm, Monday to Friday; weekend and holiday tuition is also available.
I am fortunate to have worked across the spectrum of ages and abilities in education. I have taught through key stages 2, 3 and 4 in local state – and independent – primary, SEN and secondary schools. I also teach many 18+ students to prepare for college, university and business.
Prior to teaching, yet inextricably linked, I was an entertainer for over ten years, and this experience set the foundations for making my lessons relaxed, calm and, importantly, an enjoyable experience.
And why must students ‘enjoy’ the process?
Well, thinking back to my childhood, to this day I still remember all the fun and engaging lessons, yet I’ve cast aside the banal, drab and boring ones. Thus, my approach follows a very simple ethos: fun and engaging lessons rooted in a thorough, interweaved analysis of the curriculum.
My style of teaching is far removed from the ‘traditional’, didactic and teacher-led approach. ‘Barking’ at students and simply giving them the answer is counterproductive, and counterintuitive. I encourage my students to use the structure(s) and hypotheses afforded to them to ‘discover’ the response – and subsequently express that response in an assured, confident and competent way, whether that be vocally or through writing.
And, guided by foresight, that is my aim. I seek to arm each student with the skills, theory and structure prerequisite for the many circumstances of ‘English’: whether that be SPaG for navigating the Year 6 SATs; whether that be critical thinking, essay technique and alternative interpretations expected at GCSE level; or whether that be proof-reading, drafting and editing content for a CV or job application.
The study of English is by no means finite. It’s a continuum. And, with such a difficult and contradictory language such as English, a competent grasp of its working structure is essential for success in formative and summative assessments – and life.
Thank you in advance for considering my services, and please don’t hesitate to get in touch for any and all advice.
Best,
Justin
